The Cookhouse serves up seasonal menus inspired by New Orleans culture. Stop in for Happy Hour and Dinner, discover a quaint location that’s ideal for a quick bite or spending time with friends and family while enjoying wine and beer. We are small restaurant with only 60 seats. Providing an intimate and cozy setting, with dim lighting. Don’t forget about Live Music on Friday nights. Owners Peter and Susan focus on the nostalgia of their New Orleans memories, and bring them to San Antonio. The menu at the Cookhouse changes with the seasons, providing varying tastes that rely on the ingredients from local farmers. Start off with choices from the oyster bar or soup and salad offerings for lighter flavors. Starters include fried boudin balls, smoked trout toast, Cajun cracklins and more. The main dishes at the Cookhouse include flavorful options like the New Orleans BBQ shrimp and Smoked Duck Breast. The wine and beer list is diverse and pairs well with all of the creole flavors.

Service was almost nonexistant, slow when available. Food was ok but we have had many wonderful meals for about the same price.

This was my 4th or 5th visit. Still love the place however: It had to be 85 degrees inside. Everyone was sweating and they should NOT have been open given that. They're going to be closed for renovations soon so hopefully they will address the A/C. The entire place needs some cosmetic touch ups and I'd love to see that. I get they're going for the NOLA vibe but t's hard to pay those prices while sweating and looking at the run down decor. Food was excellent as always, service a little unattentive at the beginning, but improved while we were there. Still one of my favorites.

The food was great! The service was great; however, it was so hot in there that the sweat was rolling off us. The A/C was on, but was not working well. For the price of the dishes, there were not a very wide selection of wine.

We enjoyed the Tasty Tuesday’s menu very much. Both of us had the tasty and refreshing watermelon salad, totally delicious blackened catfish, and finished up with a scrumptious beignet! I forgot to mention that we also shared the Viet-Cajun seafood tostada, another beautifully presented and very flavorful dish. Our whole meal was fabulous as was the service!

Wonderful place to spend an evening. We heard the Jim Cullen Jazz Band and sat right up front. Food was remarkable. Waiter was there when needed but didn't bug us. A required destination on my next trip to San Antonio.

Everyone was very friendly. The atmosphere was a mix of quaint and upscale. The Boudin Balls were very tasty and the oysters were fresh and delicious. We had shrimp and catfish Po-boys which were very good as well and garnished with their tangy Cole slaw and sweet pickles. Overall a great experience that I would highly recommend.

Food was delicious. Service was lacking in that our server seemed uninterested in serving us. He had zero excitement about the food he was selling. My wine glass became empty and he never returned to ask if I would like another. He knew very little about the deserts as well. Little things such as empty candles, lots of empty dishes left on our table and smoky atmosphere made the ambiance lacking.

The service was awesome. The food recommendations were good choices. The highlight dish was the BBQ shrimp. Great flavor and shrimp cooked perfectly. The French fries were fantastic too. Our least favorite was the red beans and rice - some beans were hard. The boudin balls were different than we expected as the rice mixture was tomato sauce based. All in all, the cuisine reminded us of being in NOLA. Can’t wait to dine again.

As always, this last visit to Cookhouse was a great experience. You can tell the owner puts a lot of love into this place to create a comfortable and authentic experience. The green salad and melon salad were both bursting with flavor, the chargrilled oysters are as good as any you will find in New Orleans. My BBQ shrimp was awesome, but that sauce seriously needed more bread to sop up all those flavors. The pork chop, while tasty, was a bit on the small side, so may need to take that into consideration if you’re really hungry. My only complaint is that while our server was friendly, there was someone who brought bread, someone else who refilled drinks, someone else who dropped off food and apps, etc. There was often miscommunication and at times it took too long to wait for refills, we waited forever on bread bc the person our server asked to bring it to us forget. I prefer an experience where the waiter is earning the tip and responsible for the whole meal, not just an order taker and check bringer.

Having lived in East Texas, my husband and I have missed eating authentic Cajun food since moving to San Antonio. I was thrilled to find out about the Cookhouse, and surprised my husband for his birthday. It was a bit warm inside but the ambiance was nice. The menu was enticing. We eagerly ordered zucchini hushpuppies ( I believe ). They were very dark brown (i.e. burned) and so salty we literally could not swallow them. No worries..the gumbo was actually what we were ecstatic to try anyway! As soon as the bowls were placed on the table, the smell of bbq smoke filled the air.
There was no hint of traditional gumbo flavor to be found. My heart sank into my chest. What a horrible let down. My jambalaya entree was mediocre, however my husband's BBQ shrimp was delightful! The broth was absolutely delicious! Sadly, as much as we both enjoyed his entree, we will continue our search for authentic cajun food elsewhere.
