The Commoner
At our gastropub, we don’t distinguish between commoners and kings; we just want to feed the good people of Pittsburgh. In the restaurant, seasonal menus add a modern flair to classic comforts, complemented by a robust selection of local beers and craft spirits. It’s all served in an industrial-inspired setting in downtown Pittsburgh. Come and join us for an uncommonly good time.

Food is always good. Service is the best. Always enjoy the atmosphere at the commoner.
Nice time with the wife for a nice getaway from the kids
It was our third time at The Commoner. We absolutely love the atmosphere, bar, drinks etc. This time, however, the food was below average. For the prices you pay the food flat out needs to be better. I will go back and enjoy the bar area but to sit down for dinner....probably not
Food was incredible, our favourite was the crispy potatoes and cheese. The ambiance and decor is beautiful and made our meal spectacular!
Always great food, interesting drinks. We love this place and glad to have it open in these trying times.
Quiet, good food, socially distanced tables! We’re at a hotel Monaco all week. Very convenient!
Thanksgiving set menu was very tasty. Generally a bit on the pricey side but it is right downtown. Service was great and working very well under pandemic restrictions. Cocktails excellent!
The food and service were good, my family and I would go back to try lunch and dinner
Perfect time
“Prime Rib”?? When I asked for an end cut, the server had to check with the chef. He comes back, and at that point informs me it’s in quotes. It’s a steak??? He didn’t ask for the temperature, he obviously didn’t know the difference. I changed my order to chicken, it was awful. I couldn’t finish it, or the celery side dish. The lightbulbs, which are essentially the ambiance, hadn’t been dusted in a year perhaps? To top it off, we were given the ol pressure to buy alcohol about four times throughout the meal, including after finishing? Obviously your cocktails are the only reason for sustainability- epic fail. We LOVE the kimpton, but first time and last at the commoner.

Really enjoy brunch at the commoner, always delivers a great experience in town with the convenience of valet parking. Worth the drive and price for special occasions. Staff always attentive and friendly. Food delicious and good portions. Craft cocktails fresh and hit home. A little over done on the burgers (wanted medium but over cooked). Otherwise great- cinnamon bun as a shareable to get started highly recommended!
Food was great. Service was very good. Music was repetitive, boring techno stuff.
I ordered the scallops and my wife ordered a pasta dish. Both meals were excellent. Our server John was great. He had a wide knowledge of the drinks and the food. We always have a good experience there. I’d recommend The Commoner for any occasion.
Mom and Dad don't get out too often with a 2 yr old at home so when we do we have very high expectations and these guys nailed it. We went for dinner on Saturday 11/14. Everything about the Commoner was fantastic from the staff to the food to the drinks to the environment. I also feel like I have to note that they made us feel very safe and are obviously following all necessary guidelines to protect their staff and guests. Highly recommend!
We enjoyed incredible food and drinks in a fun (but safe, clean, and socially distant!) environment.
Our server helped us celebrate a fantastic going away party for a good friend and co-worker. He will be missed.
Food was delicious!Ambience was magical. Will definitely go back !
I really like that the menu changes pretty often. There's always something new to try, and it's always fantastic.
We went for breakfast and we sat for almost 40 minutes before the waiter (the only one we saw) took our order. He was taking care of at least 6-8 tables alone. We were there an hour and half for omelets and bagels.
The commoner has always been one of my favorite spots! The drinks are so different and delicious! We were happily surprised to see that the full brunch menu was back! Highly highly highly recommend you check this place out!
It was great! The commoner never disappoints! Fun drinks too!
The brunch was excellent! Everyone enjoyed their food and the service was great!
The Commoner is far from an everyday common meal.
Situated in the lobby of the Kimpton Hotel is the multi level, modern chic restaurant, the Commoner. .
With reclaimed yet elegant woods, soft fabrics and dark green tile the ambience is certainly elevated versus your ordinary restaurants.
The menu offers culinary twists of not so ordinary every day meals. Everything we ordered was fresh, well seasoned and delicious. Starting with beets and crispy potatoes followed by the elk, tuna tartare and the fresh cavatelli… Nothing disappointed.
Highly recommend!!
I was really surprised. We took a couple friends to a place we typically enjoy very much. The service is always great and the food is great. Not so much on the food size this time. Our food was good however I noticed prices have increased and portion size has gone down. I understand things are tight right now but they can’t be that tight. The waiter was attentive for a majority of the time. Unfortunately based on cost versus product I won’t be returning. Sorry to do this but it’s the truth.
We ate outside in the street next to the building. They have done a great job adapting to the current situation with their outdoor dining. It was the nicest experience we’ve had with outdoor dining since the pandemic began. Cute tables, great food and excellent service.
Limited menu, which isn’t unusual these days. The steak tartar was a mixture of steak that has peanuts and other items. Not exactly a traditional steak tartare. Portions size for the trout was a like 3 oz. Ridiculously small but the pasta dish (not surprisingly b/c it’s cheap to make) was a good size. Service was attentive but not knowledgeable on wines or drinks. Big fall off from previous visits.
Cool atmosphere, great food, great service!
Don’t be fooled. This is a below average Hotel restaurant. I had the scallops. Three on the place and only managed to eat 1.5. They were bad. My daughter had the duck breast. We shared a few bites but left the majority on the plate. We were hoping for a cool, industrial, downtown experience and departed disappointed to go grab a milkshake from a nearby downtown shop.
Restaurant was out of coffee, tea, and Cabernet. Wrong food order and wrong drink order
The Commoner is amazing - I just wouldn't recommend it for brunch. They don't have many non-meat options for a non-meat eater and the Brunch menu is very small. Small is better, but the prices did not exceed the quality and experience. The smoked salmon bagel was $16 and that was literally all you got. Not a side of greens, etc.. There were not even side options available on the Brunch menu to add. During my visit, the espresso machine wasn't working so no cappuccino or espresso for me. I have no issue paying for an expensive Brunch, but make it worth it. Being 'The Commoner' and inside of Hotel Monaco doesn't always provide the permission to upcharge and then not deliver fully. I love The Commoner for dinner, but will not ever go back for Brunch. Would recommend Flr 2 Downtown for a Brunch experience instead. So many more options, the portions are better, and it's expensive but worth every penny.
Loved how clean it was!! Food was Good!!! Was having a Birthday Brunch!!
Given the impact of Covid on the restaurant industry their service quality of food presentation of food was phenomenal! The only limiting factor was the impact of Covid on the overall dinning experience.
If you were in town to visit Duquesne university strongly recommend taking your student here.
Great food, the appetizers were outstanding! Appropriate social distance, as well.
We really liked the place and our service was excellent, however, the food was somewhat disappointing. We only heard good reviews from everyone who went to the restaurant which is why we booked this place. Our appetizers were very good however the salmon was almost raw and the pasta dishes were fair, almost tasted reheated and not freshly cooked. I believe the hamburger was good.
We did not try any desserts
Our reservations were honored. I would have loved to give an excellent review for everything about the restaurant, perhaps we just hit an off night. I would recommend this restaurant because I would hope they would have a better food experience than we did and I would give them a second chance.
The meal was fantastic. I had the Elk and it was done to perfection.
Made a reservation for 8P for outside. Waited nearly 10 min for the hostess and then he asked the people behind me if they had a reservation. We all laughed it off and then I was seated. Inside. We asked if we could go outside. We were given several excuses and told they would move us in 15-30 min We waited for a server to get a drink. Nothing. Then we were told there were no more tables. It was now 9P. We gave up and decided to order and then saw them seat another couple outside. We asked and then said they had a reservation at 6. It was now after 9. We basically pushed to be seated outside so finally we order! The server was awesome. Food was good. But it took 1 hour and 15 min for it to happen with a reservation! We then had to rush to order because the kitchen was closing. Overall it was a frustrating evening.
We sat outdoors and had a great time plus delicious food.
Great service and food!
We travel from the West Chester area to not only enjoy your restaurant but to stay at the Monaco worth every mile 300 to be exact. Looking forward to our next stay and dinner lunch and breakfast when they become available thanks again
I had the elk loin and my wife had the scallops. Excellent food but the quantity for price paid was a little disappointing. Under the current circumstances we were more than glad to pay the price. We were also thankful they had outdoor seating during the pandemic. The side street setting was very nice...hopefully they can add some heaters so they can keep that option during the milder days in the winter. Overall a wonderful experience and thank you for beating the odds and staying open during these terrible times. Much appreciated!
