I was really surprised. We took a couple friends to a place we typically enjoy very much. The service is always great and the food is great. Not so much on the food size this time. Our food was good however I noticed prices have increased and portion size has gone down. I understand things are tight right now but they can’t be that tight. The waiter was attentive for a majority of the time. Unfortunately based on cost versus product I won’t be returning. Sorry to do this but it’s the truth.
Limited menu, which isn’t unusual these days. The steak tartar was a mixture of steak that has peanuts and other items. Not exactly a traditional steak tartare. Portions size for the trout was a like 3 oz. Ridiculously small but the pasta dish (not surprisingly b/c it’s cheap to make) was a good size. Service was attentive but not knowledgeable on wines or drinks. Big fall off from previous visits.
Cool atmosphere, great food, great service!
Don’t be fooled. This is a below average Hotel restaurant. I had the scallops. Three on the place and only managed to eat 1.5. They were bad. My daughter had the duck breast. We shared a few bites but left the majority on the plate. We were hoping for a cool, industrial, downtown experience and departed disappointed to go grab a milkshake from a nearby downtown shop.
Restaurant was out of coffee, tea, and Cabernet. Wrong food order and wrong drink order
The Commoner is amazing - I just wouldn't recommend it for brunch. They don't have many non-meat options for a non-meat eater and the Brunch menu is very small. Small is better, but the prices did not exceed the quality and experience. The smoked salmon bagel was $16 and that was literally all you got. Not a side of greens, etc.. There were not even side options available on the Brunch menu to add. During my visit, the espresso machine wasn't working so no cappuccino or espresso for me. I have no issue paying for an expensive Brunch, but make it worth it. Being 'The Commoner' and inside of Hotel Monaco doesn't always provide the permission to upcharge and then not deliver fully. I love The Commoner for dinner, but will not ever go back for Brunch. Would recommend Flr 2 Downtown for a Brunch experience instead. So many more options, the portions are better, and it's expensive but worth every penny.
Loved how clean it was!! Food was Good!!! Was having a Birthday Brunch!!
Great food, the appetizers were outstanding! Appropriate social distance, as well.
We really liked the place and our service was excellent, however, the food was somewhat disappointing. We only heard good reviews from everyone who went to the restaurant which is why we booked this place. Our appetizers were very good however the salmon was almost raw and the pasta dishes were fair, almost tasted reheated and not freshly cooked. I believe the hamburger was good.
We did not try any desserts
Our reservations were honored. I would have loved to give an excellent review for everything about the restaurant, perhaps we just hit an off night. I would recommend this restaurant because I would hope they would have a better food experience than we did and I would give them a second chance.
The meal was fantastic. I had the Elk and it was done to perfection.
Made a reservation for 8P for outside. Waited nearly 10 min for the hostess and then he asked the people behind me if they had a reservation. We all laughed it off and then I was seated. Inside. We asked if we could go outside. We were given several excuses and told they would move us in 15-30 min We waited for a server to get a drink. Nothing. Then we were told there were no more tables. It was now 9P. We gave up and decided to order and then saw them seat another couple outside. We asked and then said they had a reservation at 6. It was now after 9. We basically pushed to be seated outside so finally we order! The server was awesome. Food was good. But it took 1 hour and 15 min for it to happen with a reservation! We then had to rush to order because the kitchen was closing. Overall it was a frustrating evening.
We sat outdoors and had a great time plus delicious food.
Great service and food!
We travel from the West Chester area to not only enjoy your restaurant but to stay at the Monaco worth every mile 300 to be exact. Looking forward to our next stay and dinner lunch and breakfast when they become available thanks again
I had the elk loin and my wife had the scallops. Excellent food but the quantity for price paid was a little disappointing. Under the current circumstances we were more than glad to pay the price. We were also thankful they had outdoor seating during the pandemic. The side street setting was very nice...hopefully they can add some heaters so they can keep that option during the milder days in the winter. Overall a wonderful experience and thank you for beating the odds and staying open during these terrible times. Much appreciated!
Wonderful service and recommendations from John. Enjoyed mushroom risotto, elk and scallops
Outstanding food quality. Quantity is low relative to overall value, meaning the prices were high considering the amount of food served on the plate.
We did the outdoor seating for the commoner, not the rooftop outdoor, but out the back door of the restaurant which was a few tables set up in an alley space. It was actually chill and had a good vibe. We had dinner at around eight so it had a nice nighttime downtown feel. Would do again.
Excellent! We had dinner & brunch to celebrate our anniversary this past weekend. The host was super friendly and brought us complimentary champagne! We sat outside, which was super adorable. They had music playing and the tables were properly spaced. The food was fantastic (fries a little too salty, but that’s seriously so minor) and the service was wonderful! We went up to the Biergarten for a late night snack and a few drinks before we ended our night. The only bummer was the Biergarten was booked with a bridal shower for brunch, and we ate inside instead.
Burger was Fantastic as was the peach julip! Had an 8:30 reservation but had to wait almost a half hour so slightly annoyed at that but didn’t stop us from a great time! Server was excellent and the overall place is great!
The Commoner has always been one of the better restaurants downtown, but this time it was a poor choice. The waiter said they were having trouble getting staff to come back to work, possibly they should have waited before opening.
The menu was very limited which was understandable, but I couldn’t find anything to eat. My fiancé’s fries were the best part. Our server was very nice but they seemed short staffed. Overall not my favorite.
The menu was so limited it was ridiculous. We were there for our anniversary and have never been so disappointed.
Service and atmosphere were good enough, but the menu was extremely limited, and $16 for a smash burger is excessive. The waiter described it as a Smash burger when I tried to order it medium rare, meaning they don't cook it any way but well done. It's just two saucer sized patties, smashed together - just like a Smash burger. And sure enough, it looked and tasted just like a Smash burger. Now, I like a Smash burger, don't get me wrong, but not for $16. Also, $10 for an IPA pint is also excessive. Also, although it was mostly empty, they were playing the music so loud that it was tough for us to hear each other.
The Biergarten was full, so I made a reservation for the Patio on Saturday, relatively early. The patio turned out to be a downtown alley, that was sloped. There were only four dinner entrees choices and between us we ordered three of them. None were particularly tasty, and the sauce on my salmon seemed thrown on and I’ll considered. The accompanying vegetables were covered in a vinegary sauce which was a bit overwhelming. We also ordered two appetizers. The brucietta was good; the peppers, again were bland and the sauce non descript. I enjoyed the time with my kids, but the food experience was disappointing (particularly because the Hotel Monaco restaurant in Alexandria is so consistently good).
Delicious food in a fun atmosphere- menu selection is definitely reduced at this time.
Limited menu due to Covid restrictions. The appetizers were excellent: shishito peppers and wedge salad. The entries were another story. Every single thing was over salted: the burgers, fried chicken, and French fries. The baked beans served with the fried chicken were under done. The chicken was tasty, but salty. A green veggie on the plate would’ve been welcome too.
The burgers were inedible. The waiter offered to replace the burgers, but I think my guests thought they could deal with it. But by the middle of the sandwich, it was impossible. Our waiter told the chef and there was in fact an issue with a sauce on the burger, but unfortunately the meal was ruined. They graciously removed the burgers from the check and that was very nice. And come to think of it, my margarita had the thickest salt rim I’ve ever seen in a drink. This place loves salt. I would visit again when the full menu is available, but right now it’s just too limited.
Way too expensive for what you get, but everything was good
Limited menu, but outstanding food. I had tuna tartare and pork chops. Tuna was with soy, rice crispies and peanuts, served with lettuce rounds. I didn’t think the rice crispies would work, they did, splendidly. Pork chops were perfectly cooked, still moist, served with maple baked beans.
Great food and a great time. We were outside in the alley. Service was busy. Food was great. Cocktails are great.
Reservations with the Commoner are a bit confusing. We thought we were reserved for the restaurant, but it was actually for the biergarten. Not a big deal to us. It was a lovely evening.
Did not eat at the "Commoner". While it takes your reservation under the "Commoner" you are actually eating upstairs at the Beer Garden. The "Commoner" on the first floor is closed.
Food was not bad. Pretzel was good. Mozzarella salad was ok. Had a crab cake sandwich which was acceptable. Served with bag of chips. Limited menu. Nice view. Nice service. Nice place for a glass of wine.
The restaurant was very nice and clean. The food was excellent and the service was fantastic! We would definitely eat there again!
Disappointed. Poor service, so-so food, and bad seating. We were staying at the kimpton and had a reservation for this rooftop beer garden themed restaurant. Our first seating was to be a 6 top table in the middle of the roof. Just 2 of us, very weird. All the 2 tops are around the edge of the roof so we asked to wait for one to clear. The first to clear was in front of the door with people constantly mulling about and going in and out. Another cleared a few minutes later in much more desirable location so we asked to move and were told it was reserved for another couple. Hmmm, we all had to have reservations so not sure why they were “special”. Anyway, nothing to write home about the food or service. The rooftop ambience is nice but that’s about it.
The Commoner, is the first floor inside restaurant but reservations thru open table show up as Commoner. You specify the beer garden in request section of reservation.
Biergarten: Beautiful location and view. The food was disappointing. I knew about the limited menu, but the quality wasn't good for the price. And you can not order from the Commoner's menu.
Very friendly and professional staff! They made sure to follow the pandemic rules, 6 feet apart or more between tables and everything was very clean.
We loved it. Prices seemed a little high but wouldn't stop us from coming back. Thanks again!
Lobster roll was very good yet not quote as big as I was expecting it was definitely great though! My date enjoyed the bada blings they were superb especially with a hint of lime I was underwhelmed at the bag of chips they gave me. My date also looked very beautiful under the city lights I had a very special time.
