To be fair, we didn’t actually eat here. We showed up for a reservation at 7 pm. We were right on time. We walked in to find no one on staff there. No hostess. No wait staff. No bartender. We waited for about five minutes and then we decided to call the restaurant to ask if someone might be available to seat us. No one answered. At this point, we walked out and went somewhere else. I know that staffing shortage is real - we completely get that. But…
This is the second time coming to the commentary and we will for sure be back. Their cocktails hit the spot and their food is consistently good no matter what you get. As an added plus it’s not too loud so it’s a great place for a cozy dinner date on a cold day like today.
Beautiful dining room. Very casual and inviting. We went for brunch and the Food was phenomenal as was the wait staff. Thrilled with our experience and can’t wait to go again. 10/10
Menu was extremely limited, not nearly what they have posted online. Coffee machine maker also broken
Horrible service, literally waited an hour before any sort of staff came to say hello
Lame overall. Service, food -- just not very good.
Hotel restaurant, so over priced for what you get. Tiny portions at brunch but can't beat $3 mimosas (multiple varieties and surprisingly good!) and $5 bloody Mary's
The space and decor are great. I thought the food was good (we ordered salads and sandwiches) but the service could be better. We waited 15 minutes before anyone greeted us or took our order (someone did provide water). We then waited another 45 minutes before we were served. Not ideal for a lunch during the work week.
Went for brunch but i think there were only like 3 breakfast options even on their brunch menu. My huevos rancheros were $12 but was pretty much just one taco. Their food was really bland (i need flavor). The best deal is for their drinks for brunch. We were pretty much the only people there but it was impossible getting our servers attention.
Limited menu service was slow
We got married at the Westin a few months ago and we often walk to The Commentary for date night. The staff are friendly, the menu is limited, but the food is good and attractively presented.
Excellent, attentive service and every bite we had was so delicious. I was so happy to see they had vegan and gluten-free options on the menu. The cocktail/drink list goes on for miles! Go easy on the specialty cocktails because they can be strong ;) We will definitely be back!
The food was good.
The food was bit pricey but tasted great. Our server was super nice and the interior was clean and spacious. Excellent for a quiet brunch. The street parking wasn't too bad either - and there's a public garage right down the block as well.
As long time locals we are often looking for new places to try for dinner. Read some reviews, they were not great but enough decent ones to give it a try since we eat out 2/3 nights a week based on our schedule.
Seated quickly, classic hotel scene and atmosphere. Went on a week night with my husband and 12-year-old son who is just one of those easy kids who will eat anything and out when we do. Unfortunately the food was nothing like I had had hoped for. The review & gallery photos were nothing like the food we received. For me, it’s important that your main food / main course is a dominant feature. Here are the sides seem to be the only saving grace. So after our dining experience, the only good thing about this place is the ambience, and bartenders!
One of my favorites - and on the menu .... looking forward too! ...was a prosciutto, arugula, balsamic glaze with shaved Parm flatbread -which came to the table nothing short of a dried out piece of toast with a tiny bit of bacon sized prosciutto on it. I was so disappointed - there was no Parmesan, there was no arugula, and very little balsamic glaze- And whatever was left on it that wasn’t liquid was so dried out that it was toast. I could’ve made The same thing in my own toaster oven.
We also tried the plant based burger or whatever was the “meatless burger” and it was absolutely awful. It seemed like they took this smart food item and threw it into the fryer. Put it on a dried out bun with a few items that left a horrible taste in my mouth the rest of the evening.
Unfortunately this is in a hotel which maybe started out strong, but when you have to be the kitchen for the hotel can’t do it all.
The bartenders are solid and make great drinks- The wait staff is polite and helpful, a bit too slow, hostess was very helpful and helping the staff By picking up the slack.
Unfortunately we will not be back 😕
The wait staff acted odd. Food took longer than expect for simple breakfast foods.
We are newlyweds, we live in the neighborhood, we were married at the Westin, and The Commentary is where we most often do date night. We are regulars and we appreciate the warm hospitality and familiarity.
Very spacious dim casual modern lounge restaurant located inside The Westin. Dined for 2 around happy hour.
Beyond Meat Burger$14 (plant-based patty, caramelized poblano peppers & onions, avocado slices, bibb lettuce, pico de gallo & pickle on a multigrain vegan bun) - delicious patty (not dry), used all the avocado slices. Towards the end of finishing my burger, the multigrain bun was a little too much (too multigrain lol).
Seasonal Fruit $6 - the size/portion of this item was surprising. Literally smaller than a palm sized ramekin.
Service - hostess and server were extremely friendly and patient!
Parking - validated valet parking (valet parking is located on N. Vermont Street). I completely missed the hotel entrance and ended parking on Fairfax Drive for $4 for 2 hrs.
Value - Beyond Meat Burger was a value. The seasonal fruit side was not.
I had to give some of my food to my husband because his dish was enough for him. The grilled cheese was good, but the eggs w/ tortillas was not enough.
Terrible service and sub par food.
Great night out. Good food and cool space
Nothing special about that place.
Food was ok. No ambiance.
We won’t go back.
It was great, solid happy hour, friendly service, good food.
Great new spot! Great menu and great service - give it a try!
Thank You!! We are so happy that you enjoyed your time at The Commentary and we appreciate your feedback. Looking forward to serving you again.
Our party of four went for a late Sunday Brunch. Our waiter was extremely attentive and the food was really good. I am more of an ambience person. My friends loved the food but I was smitten with all the comfortable and beautifully appointed cozy places to eat. Well situated and easy to park. Will return.
Thank you so much for your kind words! We are so happy that you enjoyed your time at The Commentary and we appreciate your feedback. Looking forward to serving you again, hopefully over happy hour next time!
This was a new adventure for us. The service and timing lacks badly. WE watched a server, bartender, and manager stand a talk for almost 15min before being seated. At that point we waited another 30min before being greeted and asked for any type of order. They ONLY had one other party so being busy wasn't an excuse. Once we finally got food, the experience was good. We enjoyed our offerings as well as the beverage. The biggest downfall here is the service. We watched 2 group leave after waiting so long.
We went for my mother’s birthday which happens to fall on Christmas Day. The fixed prix menu was reasonably priced and delicious. I had scallops, sea bass, pumpkin bread pudding and a delicious sparkling pear cocktail for $45 and enjoyed it all. Very good food.
Great location, nice ambience, and a beautiful setting. They were short staffed, food was late, and came cold.
The amount of food is very little for the money paid!
