I felt the Staff were not very attentive, so the service was very mediocre. Serving scallops on a very cold plate meaning it arrived luke warm and cooled down way to quickly was a let down, then to be followed by steaks being served on cold plates is also a bit of a let down. The food itself was very nice, just the attention to detail and service is a bit of a let down, so did match the prices being charged. I love dining at good restaurants, and happy to pay the prices, but with that I also want the service to go with that. It is not all down to the chef.

A really good place for two sets of parents to catch up with their offspring now studying at Sussex.

Menu was cool and sophisticated enough both for both young and old palettes alike.

Nice relaxed family feel without being too much so.

Service efficient but not overbearing.

We were taken upstairs by our delightful waitress, where it is quieter and a window was open for a time, which was lovely! The cod on lentils was excellent, the other two shared the Sunday roast, which was superb as usual! We all agreed that the Apple Crumble Tart was the best apple dessert any of us had ever had! Terrific! Thank you!

Wonderful meal with collegues to start Christmas and we even had Xmas Crackers provided. The food was fabulous, very fresh and perfectly cooked. Best Chateubriande ever. Cocktails and wine choice was brilliant and our Waitress was great fun but not intrusive. All in all a marvellous experience. I should add that the trains let us down and we arrived late but this was not a problem for the restaurant and we never felt hurried with our meal.

Staff very attentive food excellent and unusual. Drinks a bit expensive, but less than hotel prices. However, I tried a Noble Riesling, dessert wine, well worth the £9.00 for a small glass.

Food was lovely. Just thought it was over priced by about 20%. The steaks were pricey without even one side as the sides were 8/9 pound extra each.
Some of the bottles of wine were over priced too.
I normally come here every year with customers but I'd probably check elsewhere next year.

The ambience was generally nice if little too cosy. The food tasted really delicious; menu clear and readable- non nonsense jargon. The service though efficient was disinterested to say the least; forgot chips and when we asked for it it came 10 minutes after the rest of the food.

We enjoyed our meal, the steaks were especially good. The burgers were average, we thought. Starters were interesting and tasty. Thank you - we’d come again.

Really enjoyed our meals. The steaks were cooked perfectly. It’s expensive but well worth it for a treat. They did a little plate with Happy Birthday on and a chocolate truffle, which was a nice touch.

It was a great meal and service was of a high standard. My only negative was that we sat near the door and every time people came in we experienced a stiff blast of cold air !

Very enjoyable birthday meal, unhurried and friendly early on a busy Friday. Only caveat, I would have expected to be offered the pre theatre menu - wouldn't have used it, but should have been presented. Really annoys me when waiters don't mention offers or daily dishes.

The waitress was lovely, friendly and knowledgable. The range was very meat orientated ( as expected ) and the quality of the fillet was outstanding.Starters were mixed. The octopus was a blacked finger in homeopathic quantities. Cold by the time it arrived and bizarrely accompanied by a slime of mushroom. Other starters were tasty.
The steak was well cooked and accompanied by sauce of one's choosing. The vegatables were average good chips, overcooked broccoli and tasty spinach. All crammed into tiny bowls ( why?) The restaurant was pretty chilly and needed some attention to decor. Did I enjoy it? Yes if you fancy steak and chips and decent wine it works.

This is a haven for meat eaters. Ambiance is warm and informal with upstairs quieter than down for those of us a little hard of hearing! On the day we went our waiter was attentive and helpful. A thoroughly enjoyable experience all round.

Great place for a long lunch , one of the things I love about the Coal Shed is they don't care how long you want to stay - they will leave you to it and prep for the evening, do paperwork whatever.
Of course the main attraction is obviously their legendary steaks to which I would now add their fire roasted oysters - try them !
Service was absolutely Superb and on Mondays they offer BYO for a £5 so fantastic opportunity to take something really special along .
We did !
