About this restaurant

  • Great for brunch
  • Good for groups
  • Neighborhood gem
So, what's the story behind the people at The Bay Restaurant? Well, there's Gavin Oakley, he's at the helm of the place. With quite a few years of experience in the restaurant game. He was trained in the art of cooking by his father Chris a Michelin starred chef and comes from the 'stables' of Albert and Michel Roux the Godfathers of Great British Cuisine. Gavin is passsionate about producing food with "flavour and oomph" using great raw ingredients, he's often to be found out and about at local markets or in the wilds of White Cliffs Country searching for the best produce kent has to offer. At Gavin's side are a young team of talented chefs. Andrew Butcher, a highly qualified chef takes the lead in the kitchen and works relentlessly in the pursuit of excellence. His 'wing man' is Chris Parker a young man whose travels and experiences around the globe bring a freshness and vitality into the mix. Their combined enthusiasm is evident in the fresh feel of the place and we hope you enjoy.

We dined here with our daughter who was visiting us for the weekend. My daughter and husband had the steak which they both enjoyed. I had the Chicken Escalope which had lemon bread crumbs. Service was just right. Restaurant is nicely decorated. It has an outdoor garden with a pizza oven. Worth a visit.

Lovely meal, little disappointed with the lack of choice in the lunch menu and not clearly explained. Not all on the specials board was on offer, we had to ask which was dinner and lunch menu. Service was slow and we had to keep asking although staff friendly were not clear. Been before last year and the lunch options were much better in the past which is why we came back. Overall still a lovely place to eat.

Had Sunday lunch here. Delicious food, good service and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Asked for some extra veg (which was very tasty) and it was bought to us within minutes. Very pleased

Lovely food but the restaurant and the toilets could benefit from some TLC- it is looking very tired, worn- out and scruffy.

Totally enjoyable dining experience. Mussel starter was marvellous and fillet steak just wonderful too. I would have ordered a large mussel as a main course if I had know how lovely it was. Thanks for a lovely meal.

I only see my sisters once a year so we like to make it something special. We had a lovely time and our meal was amazing. The staff were friendly and efficient, too.

You are unable to sit at your table and order food from a menu. Instead you have to stare at a large blackboard & then order at the bar so if you ask for a description of what something is & don't fancy it, you then have to go back to the board again. I had the Kentish Blue Salad which sounded very nice. It was actually a bit strange. Both hot & cold lettuce with crumb sized bits of blue cheese & walnut, but as well as mixing hot & cold lettuce (this should never happen) there were also 2 quartered pieces of very crisp apple but this too was hot as it been put on a griddle but still as crisp as an uncooked Granny Smith. My husband had pork fritters. Fritters are defined as slices covered in batter. What actually turned up were pea sized bits of pork deep fried in batter, so more like croutons really & then only about 6 on the plate. We both had crab with a breadcrumb topping. The crab was all dark meat & it ended up being quite sickly. It was also the temperature of molten lava & I had to empty it out of it's dish onto the plate to try to cool it down a bit. Overall the service from the waitress was great but the rest of it was pretty awful. The food combinations were awful, it didn't taste very nice & it was well overpriced. What was even more disappointing, was the website looks fantastic but none of the menus on the website were available just a pretty lack lustre blackboard choice. A classic case of trying too hard to be a bit different but going way over the edge.

Only found this gem a few months ago and have been 3 times already. Food is amazing, staff very helpful and friendly and a great atmosphere. 3 Courses for £20 on a Sunday what a bargain. The only thing I would say is the Sunday menu is a bit limited but otherwise a fantastic restaurant.
