   We enjoyed a very good Chefs tasting menu. The food quality was excellent. The staff were attentive and friendly. Excellent value for money. We will go again!

   We had an absolutely splendid meal last Friday evening. The food was outstanding, beautifully presented and so delicious. The halibut in particular was superb but we couldn’t fault any of the three courses. The service was exceptional

    Eaten here several times. The food and service are excellent. This time however I had to witness a couple with a dog throwing food to the dog who was under the table. This isn’t a hotel or restaurant where I would expect this to happen.

    Excellent venue for a quiet quality meal. A menu with very good choices for all tastes and wines to compliment at reasonable prices. The service was very friendlymaking one feel that they were being looked after. Definitely worth a visit.

    Could not fault the food. It was sublime. Less can be said for the ambience or table service which was poor. Waitress we first met was indifferent and not interested which created a bad impression from the start. Not very welcoming. No table cloths and not very comfortable seating was also a disappointment. The food was excellent but the whole package is mediocre and we shall not be returning.

    An airy spacious restaurant with charming staff who paced our meal very well, with no rush or long waits. Excellent wine list and I was offered a taste of the wine before I decided - a nice touch. I chose venison which was pink and perfect, tender and tasty with roasted root veg, cauliflower purée and girolles with a delicious jus. No room for starters or dessert but then I was tempted by the Affogato, despite not usually being an ice cream fan… Always fun, mixing the ingredients oneself…Added bonus was plenty of parking - all just far enough out of town centre to admire the lovely old buildings and then the views en route.

    The dining room is clearly an extension to the existing hotel and lacks any real character - and with no soft furnishings, any slight noise reverberates around the room to the point where we were afraid of talking too loudly. The food is delicious and the staff are welcoming but the place lacked atmosphere.

    Firstly, I can’t fault the service. The people that work there are wonderful. The food was disappointing. The main course was good but not great. The starter was disappointing and the dessert was poor. I had chosen the starter as it was one that I had eaten elsewhere and it had been amazing. Sadly, this one was not a patch on it. I had the poached pear but it just tasted like pear. Not poached in anything. On the menu the dessert sounded amazing but in reality it wasn’t really what was described and was very underwhelming. Sadly, I wouldn’t choose to eat there again.

    Delicious food , beautifully presented , service was friendly , polite and courteous , but helpful . There is quiet background music , the covers are set in order to provide privacy to each table - so perfect for a cosy meal for us. Altogether a lovely evening .

    Unexpectedly there was a tasting menu on the evening we went. Whilst I wouldn't have chosen the items on offer, each course was excellent. The only downside was that the courses arrived without a gap between since obviously the preparation was the same for everyone

    We had a delicious lunch here last week. The food was well executed and presented. The meat and the fish were very good as were the starters of soup and fish. Service is relaxed and friendly as always.

    I live locally & lunch here around 4x annually. I love the peaceful atmosphere of the place, especially as soon as I step through the door. Very obligingly I am offered the vegetarian choice on the dinner menu as well, otherwise there is just 1 meal choice. Despite previous review(s) any vegetarian desserts are not indicated so I have to ask. And extra side dishes (vegetables etc.) are not shown on the menu but are provided if requested. A more adventurous vegetarian selection would be great. Risotto and, mainly, potato dishes are a bit "old hat". That said I return because I like the complete experience here.

    We really enjoyed their tasting menu event. We also had the wine flight to complement each dish. Every course was delightful, beautifully cooked and presented. The service was attentive and unobtrusive. The wines were well paired and my favourite was definitely the Australian sweet wine served with dessert, just perfect! Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. If I had some feedback for the team, but absolutely no complaints, I would ask that service was slightly slower, so each course could be savoured and as wine was served, it would be nice if they were introduced and explained why they had been chosen to complement the dish.

    This was our 3rd visit to The Cliffe and the food was very good, although I left a little disappointed this time. If this had been my 1st visit I would have been happy but probably wouldn’t have been back 3 times ……… the food was good pub grub …….. rather than restaurant ….. the menu sounded amazing but the food didn’t meet expectations ……..

    Great location with a lovely terrace for pre meal drinks. Service was a bit erratic during the evening. Both the starters and main course were under seasoned but the shoulder of lamb was nicely cooked. Starters and dessert were on the small side for the amount charged. Nice selection of wines.

    Had high hopes but was a bit disappointed. The room was very warm with only a door open, no windows open and no fans. There was a very loud jazz band playing in the open plan lounge and this made it hard to hear the waitress and it was very intrusive. Inside is all hard surfaces, few soft furnishings and lacks a warm ambience Staff were pleasant but we did not feel much warmth. The food was good, though, well cooked and served. We ordered steak which came with the best chips I have ever eaten but there was no salad, garnish or greens, just tomatoes, and there were no vegetable side dishes on the menu. However, we did ask for something green and were served delicious fresh peas and shredded cabbage. The bread we had to start was sour dough and not fresh, unfortunately. Puddings were very good. The service was not as attentive as I would like - there was quite a wait for drinks and for ordering our food and I had to find someone to take our payment after the bill arrived. In summary, The Cliffe does not feel special enough. It needs slicker staff and a less harsh environment. And please, better ventilation and no loud music.
