The Classic Cafe at Roanoke Ratings and Reviews
The Classic Cafe is a gem. It has a quaint, romantic feel. On weekends, a classical guitarist adds to the ambience. The menu is diverse & daring w/a nice selection of moderately priced wines plus a full bar. The service was impeccable. The rack of lamb was tender, w/a wonderful flavor & plentiful in portion, served w/ cooked red cabbage & polenta, complementing this dish nicely. The roasted garlic w/goat cheese appetizer was scrumptious & fresh green salad w/ raspberry vinaigrette lovely. The soy-marinated salmon lacked flavor, but otherwise was cooked very nicely. The mixed bread basket w/ seasoned olive oil dip was perfect & chocolate cake to share was rich and just enough to top off a great dinner.
My wife and I have been to the Classic Cafe several times. It's always great. Our last visit was prompted by an eMail stating their "Special of the Week" was Beef Wellington, a favorite ours. We arrived eariler than our reservation, but Francis (Manager Extraordinaire) was able to seat us early. Within a minute, we were greeted, had drinks, fresh bread, and complimentary appetizers from the kitchen. When we ordered, we were told Beef Wellington takes a bit longer to make (which is a nice to know in advance so you don't feel forgotten), but they are always attentive. As far as the Beef Wellington . . . INCREDIBLE! You could cut the tenderloin with a fork and the mushroom duxxle and bread crust left me longing for more. Wow! Awesome!
Classic Cafe was once awesome, but they've made changes to the menu that are not for the better. My husbands steak was very good, although not cooked as he had ordered, served quite rare when he had ordered it medium. I had the pork tenderloin, which was a favorite of mine one past. They have changed from a traditional and very good mushroom sauce to a mole that was ill prepared and not at all an improvement. Without the sauce the pork was very dry and over cooked. I also had a roasted garlic and goat cheese appetizer. I love goat cheese but was very disappointed in the dish, as it was very plain. I was bored by the meal over all. But we go out serval times a week and my expectations are high.
Over all a little over rated.
Although the food at The Classic is outstanding, what makes the Classic nice is that you can actually have a conversation without struggling to hear the people at your table. Also, the Classic has a fantastic grilled vegetable plate that now makes The Classic an option for business meetings when you need to accommodate vegetarians.
Both the service and food were top notch. Some may consider the menu pricey, but the quality of the ingredients, preparation, presentation coupled with the service make this an experience worth the price. It was also refreshing that I didn't have to talk loudly to be heard.
Service was outstanding, food superb. It was our 20th anniversary and we were made to feel as special as the event. Would have loved some low volume background music. I love the atmosphere but the tables spaced so closely together you feel you are sharing your conversation with the tables adjacent to yours. But wonderful despite that.
We have been going to Classic Cafe in Roanoke since moving to Texas 20 years ago and each time is better than the last!
Consistently fantastic food and service.
The wedge salad and tomato basil soup are a must before choosing one of their outstanding entrees. I typically sample one of their specials, as I did last night... Filet Medallions with Creole sauce, topped with Gorgonzola! My wife had the same, paired with a cold water lobster tail. Superb!
You can't go wrong here, and you'll love the ambiance. Quiet, discreet and very inviting!
We were surprised at how expensive the dishes were for how little food you actually received. Wife had the house salad - which was just lettuce on a plate, nothing else - and it was $6.50. Shocking. The entrees were very good, but pricey - we chose some of the least expensive entrees and they were still mid $20's. Desserts average $7. Throw in a $5 iced tea and we walked away spending $80 for the two of us. Ouch.
The food was very good, it's just the apparent value isn't there. If you're looking for an upscale place to dine in Roanoke, and are OK with the high prices, then this is a good place to go.
We've been to The Classic Cafe numerous times for the food and plan to go back many more times to come, however, on our most recent visit, we noticed that the noise level was quite loud! Perhaps it was the fact that the restaurant was full, but we don't ever remember the noise level being so extreme. Also, we sat in the every back corner of the restaurant (table 13), and thought that maybe the sound was just amplified back in that nook. The bar area was perfect and noise was fine. The musician was fabulous. Despite the noise level at our table, we will be back many more times to come.
This was a nice evening, we've been here more then just a few times. As usual, the food was good, wonderful flavors and pairings. The only misfire was that the steak was cooked a little too much, but it was still a good cut of meat that was flavored just right. The only other nit as always, (and I don't know how to fix it), it was a little bit noisy, not as bad as many other places these days, but still a tad loud.
Food was mimialistic, serice was average. I felt the restaurant was not prepared as there was a long time between courses. Do not accept a seat in the bAr/ waiting room as the noise makes the simple act of conversation impossible. Plan on spending $100 per person.
Restaurant had special, limited menu for this special evening. I appreciated being seated promptly when we arrived a few minutes early for our reservation at 6:30. Food quality was very good, service was acceptable given how busy it was. It made for a nice dinning experience.
Who would of thought to find a wizard of a chef in the small town of Roanoke but there it was. The food was well crafted with an artistic blend of flavors. Everything tasted incredibly fresh with some ingredients from their own garden. Good size portions and on time service. The decor is more small town yet with good art on the walls. They did a lot with what the have.
Classic Café is a wonderful gem in Roanoke where you get a 5 star restaurant but without all the pretense. Great food great wine list and most of all the service and atmosphere is outstanding. The waiters always allow you to enjoy your meal without constant interruptions and best of all they allow you to enjoy your meal without feeling like they are pushing you out the door. Highly recommend this place.
My wife and I have dined here a couple of times and previously were very impressed. This time we were a little disappointed. The wait time was too long. From our arrival to the time we received our food was 90 mins.We had calamari for an appetizer and it was too greasy and the dip was not tasty. Our entrees were good .my wife hade the crab stuffed tilapia and I had the combo that included filet mignon, sausage and quail breast. We share our plates so I ordered the filet well done for my wifes taste and it came out med. well so she was not able to sample the steak. We were told that a party of 15 was in the next room so I guess that is where our server spent her time.It was our early Valentine celebration so I was disappointed this time.
My husband and I love to try new places and consider ourselves to be foodies too. We started the evening with an ahi tuna sashimi and their tomato basil soup. Soup was superb, tuna was a bit bland. We love dishes to have a wow factor and it just didn't quite deliver. Would have preferred to have some wasabi in the drizzle. I had the crab cakes (mediocre) and he ordered the mixed grill which was bacon wrapped quail (yum), beef sausage (not so yum) and steak which was prepared well, but the huckleberry sauce didn't pair well with the dish in our opinion. Each of the dinners came with a sweet cabbage which was tasty and a polenta cake, also very flavorful. The end of the meal was topped off by a jalepeno apple cobbler. Divine!!!
WE would go nowhere else to celebrate special occasions. The food prepared by Chef Youts changes weekly and is always a gormet treat. The staff is special and takes care of you from the time you walk in the door untll you are ready to leave. It is one of our special places and is a real dining pleasure everytime we go.
My husband and I went to dinner the other night at Classic Cafe. We enjoyed the delicious food and the atmosphere! We had some wonderful wine. We really enjoyed that our waiter and several other staff members quietly monitored us and made sure our glasses were full and that the pace of our meal was constant but never rushed. We are looking forward to another date night!
My husband and I went to celebrate my birthday. Food was terrific. Wine list was extensive. Service was decent, considering how busy the place was on a Saturday night. Our only complaint was the ambiance - it is a small place with a lot of tables so it was really loud in there at 7:30 - 8:30 pm. We sat across from each other and had a hard time hearing! The food more thank made up for it though.
Excellent food and excellent service. I had not dined at The Classic Cafe in over two years but had a business dinner there on Thursday evening, 1/2/14, and the service, ambience, menu selection and food was five star just as it always has been. Need to go there more oftern.
The evening was magnificent, with food, service and atmosphere all right on the mark. Wanda had the Atlantic chad which she claimed to be the best fish she had ever had. My filet was done perfectly and the side dishes were excellent.
When the owner serves you your appetizers, you know he cares about his guests and the meals being served. I would recommend the Classic to anyone who wants a great meal served in a small and intimate setting.
