The Clarence Social
We bought a Groupon voucher to try the place. Brilliant, so bought another to take parents buy they had reduced portion sizes for Groupon vouchers people. Not impressed. The idea of vouchers is to try what you would actually get, not have smaller meals!
Delicious food, nice music, good customer service a really nice place to eat
Great food & cocktails. Lots of gluten free options
Excellent quality and great value for money. Service a little lacking as waiting staff appeared disinterested and sloppy in approach
We enjoyed a nice meal, the food was good and portion sizes generous. Our starter did arrive extremely quickly (before our wine) so we didn't really have a chance to settle, would be my only negative comment. It was extremely busy and noisy as every other table appeared to be a Xmas party group. This wasn't a major problem and we should have expected this a week before xmas. Overall, a good experience and the staff were very friendly.
Staff chaotic , needs manager and authority to sort out .better places to go
Major event taking place downstairs made it noisy. Service is ok. Some dishes are great like the duck and cauliflower. Crab cakes were mediocre
Service between main and desert was poor, waited too long for order to be taken.
Disappointing roast dinner overall, ‘swimming’ in too much gravy, would prefer to be served on the side. A bit too noisy
Very quiet so no real atmosphere. Good service but we were the only table there by 9:15. The steaks were delicious, starters not very inspiring. We ordered white wine but they didn’t have 2 of our choices so had to make do. Will try again to see if it was just a odd night for them
We were looking forward to our visit, but when you’re friends and waitress can’t hear you, you know the music is way too loud , very disappointing, we didn’t stay.
We made a reservation for a Friday evening, five days prior to the event.
We arrived an hour before our table booking and had some drinks in the Gin & Juice bar.
We made our way to the dining area for our table just a few minutes after our booking time of 8.15pm and were taken aback that our table wasn’t available when we arrived. We were stood holding our drinks and champagne bucket with a bottle in. When we asked how much longer it would be the member of staff replied that he didn’t know. He then told us we could dine ‘in the basement’. On viewing ‘the basement’ we decided it wasn’t really what we were expecting as there were no other diners and it was dark and lacking any atmosphere. We decided to wait for our table and expressed our frustrations to another member. After a 15 minute wait of staff, which was really that much of an issue and far better than just being told they didn’t know when we would be able to dine, were shown to our table and made our selections from 2 menus for the 4 of us.
We were served our aperitifs of olives and a selection of breads, which in reality was simply white slices quarters and then our starters arrived which were tasty. After a short time after they cleared our starters I was then asked ‘how vegan I was’, as whoever took the order made a mistake as there were no vegan burgers available. I explained I was not vegan but did not eat meat and what asked what alternative was available . There, apparently, were none. I reluctantly chose the halloumi balls. They were extremely sweet and not palliative for me so I did not eat it. I was not charged for this dish.
We all felt rather awkward with how bad our booking was dealt with.
If you cannot accommodate a sitting then do not accept the reservation, if you take a sitting prior to a second table reservation then make it clear, as do most restaurants, that the table is needed at a certain time.
We empathised with the staff having to deal with a situation where our table wasn’t available
So pleased to have been here. I didn’t know this place existed, so delighted to find a new venue for lunch. Super service and good food.
I have previously really enjoyed going to Clarence Social but I have to say the food wasn't up to normal standard. There were also no waiters or waitresses around for long periods of time.
Midweek and only one other table with customers. Service and food below standard expected. No atmosphere would not return
Superb staff, know their drinks and always friendly and accommodating. Lovely atmosphere both during the day and later in the evening. An extensive spirit and cocktail menu, and the food was excellent.
All the staff were very friendly. The service was very good Solomon was excellent.
The food was lovely Sunday lunch with loads of vegetables & gravy.
Pudding also really nice brownie & hot caramel was lovely also the fruit crumble was delicious & loads of it.
Would recommend The Clarence to anyone.
We went for bottomless brunch on Sunday 25th Aug and thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon. I would say the brunch menu is a bit random, especially the starters. However the service was excellent, the waitress on shift wad very attentive, friendly and helpful which really added to our experience
Nice 3 course Sunday roast, good value at just over £20, came to £30/head with drinks and coffee.
Overall cleanliness was very poor, the floors were sticky and seats were dirty. Food was ok despite not having the meals we ordered and there was only 1 other table seated. Service was ok but lacking detail e.g. no serving spoons for vegetables and not asking for sizes of drinks. We will not be visiting again.
Absolutely brilliant best roast in Cheltenham great price
We went along for the bottomless brunch on the first day of the offering. All the staff were very friendly and we were well looked after. Initially we were the only diners and towards the end of our visit a large party arrived who were a bit noisy but that was just the luck of the draw. The food was very good and the service was excellent and our glasses were kept well topped up. Altogether a very good brunch and we would return again.
We had the whole restaurant to ourselves which was actually very nice! Service was a tad slow but the food was very good. Limited brunch menu but everything you would want and all cooked to perfection. Would go back if we were in the area again. Seems like the sort of place that would liven up at night and have a good bar scene
Such a nice relaxing place to eat, the staff were lovely and nothing was too much trouble, would definitely recommend the Sunday lunch, plenty of meat, a good variety of veggies, cooked really well, my partner had the crumble for pudding and it was really good. Would definitely go back.
Waited 45 mins for mains.
Seat was ripped up.
Menu was standard fayre with not much imagination.
Server sent our meals to wrong table “I don’t usually work up here”
Wine was served in odd glassware sort of like whisky tasters.
Every time we needed something we had to ask, there was no attentiveness from staff.
Restaurant just feels like an afterthought.
Nice staff, good food - although the seats were not clean and had rips and burns in, which made us think this wasn’t the best choice. However, staff were nice and the burgers were hand made and tasty.
This is a really great venue on a number of levels - bar, Speakeasy and restaurant.
The food was excellent and the staff friendly and professional.
Will go again and make more of all the options available.
Best roast in Cheltenham. Beef is always perfect. Always a great experience.
All was going fairly well until the music from the bar cranked up and we could no longer hear ourselves speak.
The food was okay but the menu itself was confusing with no clear distinction between starters and mains.
Everything about the place was wrong. The noise levels were like being in a seaside drunken bar rather than a restaurant, the place felt dirty and the food was terrible. The starters were run of the mill - but all they had to do was to put food from containers onto a plate (or so it seemed and tasted), but the mains - mussels and calamari - were just wrong. They tasted frozen and the texture was soft and not what you'd expect from any kind of seafood. It was so bad we left it and complained. To give the manager his due, he took the cost of the mains off our bill - although to be honest, if he hadn't I would have complained much more than I did at the time
Excellent food and ambiance. The service was really friendly, all questions were answered about the food. Overall this was an excellent dining experience and I would not hesitate to return.
Amazing lovely food staff amazing good selection available
I had a wonderful meal on a previous visit, but apparently there is a new chef which isn’t a change for the better
Very poor service at the table. Quite sarcastic waiter and charged twice for a bottle of wine.
When we arrived they said we hadn't booked, we ended up eating in the bar and not the restaurant. I have eaten here on several occasions and was really disappointed this time when in the past everything had always been amazing. Not even an apology for the mix up.
Flat Guinness on arrival and got worse! Lighting in restaurant was ridiculously low. Pretty much every table had a phone torch on to read menu. We had three different people wait on the table, two pretty unfriendly / rude and one girl very helpful. Service very slow and menu was confusing. Flat iron steak was just rough and tough. To end a pretty poor night, took over half an hour to wait for coffee, that still hadn't arrived when we left. Understaffed and many better places to eat in Cheltenham
My 2nd visit. Although much quieter than last time, still a great setting, really good food & really friendly service.
Customer service was outstanding. The young man who served us, Solly, was extremely helpful and polite and made our evening even better than we hoped. His knowledge of cocktails also helped me and my girlfriend find the perfect drinks. 5 star rating for him.
The food was amazing too. Highly recommend.
Absolutely fantastic from the service, to the ambience and the quality and presentation of the food. I thought the portion sizes were good and the recommendation of the salt and pepper squid from our fantastic waiter was perfect. The décor here is really good, and having considered coming here for a number of months, just wish we hadn't left it so long. Had a G&T from the 2 for £10 menu prior to dinner which was lovely too. Overall, a brilliant experience and we will be back.
Had a lovely meal however the music was very loud in the restaurant making it difficult to talk to my friends
This was a terrible food experience! The decor is lovely and the staff were ok. The food however was horrid. My friend and I ordered the seafood linguini and when it arrived, the prawns were so overcooked the shell was baked into the meat. They brought us more prawns but they were also over done and had not been de-veined. My husbands brisket at £20 was below average. A waste of £100 for 4 people. Skipped dessert as the main was vile. Wont be back.
