Rail Bar & Bites
Here’s a tip! Never choose this restaurant ever
While bar is nice, the food came out far from acceptable temp. Flavor was excellent but both onion straws and baked beans were like warm. One loud, obnoxious drunk didnt make it any more enjoyable. Walk the 2 block to power and light district.
Good food; good and friendly service; prices good for the immediate area
I would recommend Rail Bar & Bites only with the caveat to not have anything planned after eating. Service was achingly slow. We originally had reservations at 6:30, but were way early (5:30) so we decided to start with drinks. It wasn't busy, so we knew that eating before our reservation time wasn't going to be a problem. The server was new and wasn't familiar with the menu. Water wasn't brought to the table so we had to go to the bar to ask for it and were given a pitcher and two glasses. We ordered arancini as an appetizer. I got a french dip and my daughter got the charcuterie board. The arancini was so-so. Not a lot of flavor. The french dip and charcuterie were very good but it took such a long time to get to us and there weren't a lot of people there. When the food finally did come, we paid and asked for to-go boxes at the same time. We had no time to spare as we had tickets for a show that started in 15 minutes.
The service was awful. Every appetizer we orders we were told they were out of it. Crazy!!?
It's no longer called The City Grille. It's the Rail. Food not great - overcooked and not warm. Dessert dry and not appetizing. We left most of it there. Disappointing - will not return.
It is now called The Rail so it was a little confusing when checking in.
It is closed
The restaurant was not even open. They sent us to a quick service type area that was anything but quick. Bad situation all around.
Our first trip here, it was quiet and we got sat in the back room which had curtains so you could be alone. Wait staff was wonderful, drinks are yummy and good selection of drinks. We had burgers, homemade chips, salads and the Mac n cheese w/shrimp all wonderful! We will be back
Staff was really working hard to manage a rough night...packed house with a convention in town and a few folks had not shown up for their shift. Everybody jumped in to get people served. Ribs and brisket were great!
We were the only guests in the restaurant for the dinner hour when we were there, so we got very attentive service by the server. The food took a very long time to be delivered, but once we got it, it was absolutely delicious. We were not in a huge hurry, so we enjoyed the wait by visiting. The ambience is a typical hotel dining restaurant where breakfast might be served, so not necessarily for a special date night, but it was fine for what we wanted, which was to find a good meal prior to attending a concert down the street.
My friends and I had a 5:45 PM reservation and when we arrived there was no one at the desk. After looking around for quite a while and server finally came and seated us. At the time she gave us our menus, we told her that we needed to be out of there to go to the Music Hall. She kept telling us that our food would be up anytime. At 6:40 we asked for her to bring out our soups. The rest of our food came at 6:50 and was cool. We were not the only people in there dining before the theater and everyone seemed very unhappy with the service. Needless to say, we will never return there.
Made a reservation at the restaurant. Showed up at the allotted time and there was nobody at the hostess stand. Stood there for 10 minutes and no one came. People sitting at a table that we knew said that they had been there for 45 minutes and had only gotten water and hadn’t ordered yet. We left. Probably shouldn’t have a reservation system because there was no computer at the hostess stand.
Please do not consider this restaurant. It was horrible from beginning to end. We waited nearly an hour for 2 sandwiches and a salad. The iced tea ordered when we ordered our food arrived in a paper to go cup as we were leaving. The beef tips sandwich was 50% slimy fat! Just terrible. Service was non existent.
Arrived at 6 pm. Family of 4, seated immediately. The rest was downhill. Food orders took an hour. My plate was served first, the other 3 were served 30 min later. Entree was a cranberry chicken sandwich, supposed to have goat cheese and a pretzel bun, it had neither. Appetizer missed and delivered 90 min after arrival. We had a 7:30 show to attend at Sprint Center and arrived late due to the EXTREMELY slow service. No kids menu whatsoever. Very few tables filled while there- maybe five total! Waitress was sweet but apparently the cooks need to get their act together and speed up or this place won’t survive.
We needed to be close to the Music Hall so we booked this through Open Table. I didn't actually realize it was going to be a hotel restaurant. I guess I figured it would be a restaurant, independently owned, that happened to be in a hotel (like many of the other restaurants in hotels in downtown KC). The atmosphere isn't anything special, but the food was very good. Everything was very fresh and seasoned well. I will definitely return, but only if I'm headed to something at Bartle Hall or Music Hall. A good alternative to the crowded P and L district.
The food was obviously just room service food for the hotel and not very good at all. The service was just horrible. We waited at least 10-15 minutes any time we needed something and then waited 30 minutes for the waitress to check us out.
The photos on the site and the menu looked great but when we got there I realized it was a restaurant inside a hotel and it look like a cafeteria and we were literally the only patrons there. So we didn’t stay. The service that we got from the waitstaff initially was wonderful and I’m sure the food whatever been great but it just wasn’t what we were looking for as far as ambience.
We had a reservation but the host tried to turn us away because the kitchen was backed up. We didn’t have another choice as we had music hall tickets in an hour, so we insisted that he seat us. We were then told we better not order anything that needs to be cooked if we wanted to make our show, so we ended up with 2 salads and a $9 quesadilla that filled half a small plate. Will not be back unless they change up eceryrgjng about how they are currently doing business.
We stopped in to grab a bite to eat before attending a concert at the Sprint Center. This place is definitely a hidden gem. Food and service was amazing. Extremely affordable, especially considering the portions and presentation of food. We ordered crab cakes for an appetizer and they were the best crab cakes I think I have ever had (and we have sampled our fare share of seafood while visiting the coasts). I have already recommended the restaurant to several colleagues and friends and will continue to do so. It's quiet, quaint, cleanand in an easy to get to spot (right off the Crowne Plaza lobby), just a few short blocks from P&L, Sprint Center and the heart of downtown KC, and the food and service did not disappoint. One additional plus: they take reservations, which is becoming more difficult to find.
The service was terrible. The server did not bring salads before entree. He forgot one of our orders. He gave us a pitcher for us to serve our own water. The food was mediocre. Not worth the price at all. It was a terrible experience and ruined our special occasion.
I ate there in a slow period. Had three people wait on me, which was nice. However, I felt like they weren't aware of what each other was doing for me. Really great burger!!
