The Chew Chew Ratings and Reviews
Food was disappointing. The 'All Day Gravy' is just tons of red sauce. Couldn't taste anything else. Meat in the dish was average at best. The spinach and mushroom lasagna was also nothing special. Again, all sauce. Couldn't taste the vegetables or house made pasta. Usually really like the food. Felt like an off night. Appetizer was awesome and so was dessert.
A little gem of a restaurant tucked away unobtrusively near the train station in downtown Riverside, in the near west suburbs. Wonderfully creative and flavorful cuisine without being overly fussy or showy. It's actually a lot more ambitious than its cutesy name implies -- there's some seriously good food being prepared and served here.
We went for my sons' birthday. He is a chef at a restaurant and we all enjoyed the food but we felt the menu had too many choices. It was hard to know what the identity of the restaurant was, seafood or sandwiches or Italian. We shared the plates but there wasn't a cohesiveness to the menu.
My wife really enjoyed this restaurant, but I was disappointed. Chose it based on the menu on Open Table. When we got to the restaurant, it had a completely different menu. Mentioned this to the waiter, and he said they just changes the menu a few weeks prior, and the owner had updated it on their website. Unfortunately, they did not update it on OpenTable. I am a very particular eater, and there were about 4 or 5 things on the OpenTable menu listing that I was interested in. None of them were on the new menu.
The drinks we had were both very good, and my wife and I both started out with their onion soup, which was really good (although I would have liked a little more cheese on top). My wife had a duck meatball dish as her entree. I was not able to find an entree that I was interested in on the new menu, (as I said, particular. Do't do mushrooms, don't like tomato based sauces, allergic to capers, and there are very few vegetables I'll eat) so I ended up with two appetizers as my dinner, the Pork Schnitzel sliders (ordered minus pickles) and the crispy calamari, The sliders were good, although I needed to get more of the bacon fig jam, since without the pickles they were somewhat dry. The calamari I ended up not eating, it was more soggy than crispy, and didn't really have much of a taste to it. The manager took it off my bill (without me asking) and offered to make me something else, which I declined.
My wife then had a cappuccino and a scoop of cinnamon gelato for desert.
I'll be watching their website for the next menu change, and will go back if the next menu has options I would be interested. My wife enjoyed her entire meal, and would go back sooner.
Outstanding Dining experience ...Suburban or City! All the accolades are well deserved .Very creative ,well balanced menu. Our party of 6 all enjoyed the entrees. The Trout was a standout.Cocktail and wine list were complete and had many interesting .Service was excellent.
Sadly our experience did not match the reviews I read before booking. We were at our table for over 5 minutes before our server came to greet us and waited another 15 minutes for our wine. We had the edamame appetizer, half of which was inedible because of salt clumps on it. The presentation was subpar too - served with a squeezed lemon on the plate and chunks of the lemon intermixed in the edamame. My husband had the oysters which he said were fresh and very tasty. For our main course I had the steak chimichurri. The sauce was yummy, but the steak was bland and chewy. My husband had the scallops which were delicious as was the risotto served with them. At no time were we asked how our meals were until after we were done. I completely understand a busy Saturday night, but the level of service was poor even taking that into consideration.
Chew Chew is one of my favorite places in the suburbs. Always a great meal, friendly service, and nice atmosphere. It's not a "trendy" restaurant that is hot one minute and gone the next, this place is timeless neighborhood standby that makes you feel comfortable, relaxed and at home. My husband and I are in our mid thirties, former city dwellers, and this is our go-to place for a date.
Our dining experience was outstanding. We had an asparagus appetizer/salad which was one of the most delicious and beautifully prepared dish I have seen. We also ordered the short ribs dinner special. Scott outdid himself. The ribs were tender and meaty, and the 3 sauces we're great to taste. My husband liked the BBQ best and I couldn't get enough of the Greek butter garlic sauce. I may never go back to BBQ! You can dine inside or out. The bread and herbed butter are also wonderful. We try to eat here as often as we can, and you should try it. I usually eat the fresh fish, but all others are equally delicious with great presentation.
Chew Chew is one of our favorite go-to places. It's friendly, not pretentious, and quiet enough to have a nice conversation. It's a place where you might run into somebody you know, as we did when we were there the other night. It's also only ten minutes from our home, so that's another plus.
