Despite having a confirmed reservation, the first thing the hostess told us is that they don't take reservations, and that at that time all the have was the bar menu for the beergarten. I showed her our confirmation, and she then proceeded to ask the kitchen. They let us have the full menu. We were going to seat outside, but I saw a mouse running around the terrace, so we asked for a table inside. Unfortunately, before our dinner came, there were mice also in the indoor dining room. The food was fine, but the service was slow. And the mice... Let's just say that I don't enjoy eating while keeping my feet up all the time!
I definitely won't go there again...

Don't go here! Unprofessional. If I make a reservation I expect it to be honored. I certainly don't expect that they have no space to seat us and proceed to turn us away. The cherry on the top was having the "staff" at the reception desk explain to me in patronizing tones that the reservation we made, which was confirmed, wasn't really a reservation because it had only been made an hour prior. Listen Chester: if you can't manage capacity, don't offer reservations. It is unacceptable to use OpenTable as a marketing arm for services you may or may not feel like providing.

Not a place to go have a sit down dinner with friends to chat. Way too loud. Better bar atmosphere. They need a better way to have customers travel from outdoors into the dining area especially during the winter. Too much cold air comes in while you're trying to enjoy your food. Tables are right at the door. This is a better outdoor hang out during the summer vs. an evening dining indoors. Staff is very friendly so that helped.

The server was nice but she disappeared a lot and it takes her a very long time to come back. The food was mediocre and with its prices, not worth it. The cheesecake was good though. There were plenty tables available but my friend and I were seated right next to the door which kept opening and closing and it was really cold outside.

Service was extremely slow to the point where one hour passed before app came. The place seemed extremely understaffed. Server was confused and trying to multi task without much luck. Place was out of specific bread for avocado sandwhich and would not sub any others. Food was alright, wouldn't come again.

I usually do not write negative reviews but I feel I need to be honest about The Chester. If you are in your 20's and want to meet friends for a fun night of drinking and a light bar snack, this is the place for you. The pictures on the website and on Open Table do not show how crowded and noisy this place gets on a Saturday night. On a positive note, we had a good time (watching the young people) sitting at a wooden table at the Biergarten and drinking German beer. The homemade pretzels, calamari and burgers were good pub food. Lively scene but not a real dinner feel.

from the opentable listing and meat market corner location, realized too late this was a glorified hotel-room service restaurant. few selections, only wine offered were house red or house white.
bland food. and pricey, too. i understand though, this is a “scene” at night where quality of food doesn't matter.

Absolutely terrible service. We were excited to celebrate a birthday at The Chester. We had a reservation and were still made to wait over an hour to be seated DESPITE their being several vacant tables. Once we were finally seated it took another 45 minutes for a waitress to come to our table. By that point we decided we would finish our bottle of wine and go elsewhere to eat. That was met with an annoyed, couldn't-care-less attitude by the waitress. She turned around and left without so much as an apology. It would've been more upsetting if the menu weren't so limited, so the only thing we lost from that experience was time. We regret not listening to other reviews about this place and won't be at all surprised if this restaurant goes under. It should close and free up the retail space for a quality establishment.

We arrived for dinner at 5:45. They had music BLASTING as if it was 10pm at a night club. We were sat next to a large party where we were being bumped by people moving around the tables. None of the beers on their actual menu were available so we ordered cocktails, which got served to us in plastic glasses. They have a tented area outside where people were coming in and out of the door. Every time someone opened the door it would SLAM so hard that it would jolt you. It was by far one of the worst overall experiences I had in a restaurant. We both ordered burgers which were probably fine but i was so annoyed by the time we got our food i was going to enjoy it regardless of its quality.

Highly disappointed by the Chester. Would expect better from a restaurant situated below the Gansvoort. Showed up to brunch at 1130 to a completely empty restaurant and were given the incorrect menus we almost decided to leave (wish we would have!). Were given the correct menus and chose the eggs Benedict. It arrived after our poorly made tiny lattes. The presentation was lacking and the potatoes most defintely were microwaved out of a bag you find at the freezer section. The eggs were on top of two sliced avocado slices on a soggy biscuit. There was no flavor so I asked for hot sauce. There were rando bits of sausage meat on one half...not sure if I was supposed to be there. In all honesty should have sent it back and left but they wait staff was so awful i didn't even want to deal with the hassle. Nibbled on parts with lots of hot sauce, paid, and left. Will never return. Don't understand how places like this stay open with other amazing establishments in NY.

The ambiance and club-like atmosphere were major bummers. Despite making a reservation we were seated practically at the bar. The menu was small but food was good---the food was the redeeming quality! I have heard great things about the chester meatpacking and found the actual experience to be way worse than expected.

Not what we expected at all. Chester website makes it seem like there is a dining room area which is not true. You eat in the middle of a bar with loud music playing the entire time. Food was not great either. If you're looking for a sports bar this is the place to go, not a good place to talk and have dinner though.

Food was just not great. Appetizers were fine but main dishes were over spiced and fried (no way you could tell from the menu that Chicken Milanese, listed as a salad, would arrive as flattened chicken nuggets with a mini salad so spiced we could not eat it. Music blasting competing with various television broadcasts. Kind of a disappointment.

We booked a reservation for a family get together, when we got there the hostess told us were no tables and only available outside. The table's outside were very small and it was very loud and cold. The tables were only for people who did not have a reservation but we were given them. When i went inside i noticed there were tables available. I waz very upset because if someone makes reservations then they should be met. I was not satisfied amd will not return there. If we eat outside and not conversation with our guest's and not be able to speak because it was very loud out there, we would have went to a regular bar and paid a quarter of the price

Terrible service and horrible food. This place was empty for a Sunday brunch reservation at 11.30am and I now know why. Could barely get our warm drinks served let alone food. I cant imagine why the kitchen was busy as there only a handful of guests there. The food portions were small and we literally had to beg and plead for silverware to eat it with. Was served warm bread for toast. Will never return.

This was our second visit to the Chester and I'm starting to think it's just plain over-rated. People always talk about the people-watching, the celebs and how much fun it is. I admit we dine early (the 6-730p) range but the place is usually dead empty when we get there (still we're seated at a table with others, outside) and it's still mostly dead when we leave. Staff is all super friendly but not very attentive as far as drink refills, bringing the check, etc. Food was in general pretty good on this visit. The fried mozzarella burger is by far the best - - burger cooked as ordered with a spicy red sauce and covered with gooey cheese. The bratwurst was super plain (imagine a picnic) although it tasted good and the BG Chicken Caesar has almost no chicken in it. Not a waste of money, not awful but really just not very much fun.

Went for lunch and felt menu was limited. Has a Bavarian feel but no Bavarian dishes. Items served on wooden board and made it awkward to eat off. Selections were somewhat messy so having s decent plate would have been better. Asked for check three times before getting it.

My boyfriend and I traveled from western Mass to NYC to celebrate my birthday. A friend had recommended us to go to the Chester, so we made a reservation. We arrived on time and were seated right away. We wanted to sit outside but were seated at a picknick table with other people. For a more intimate experience we asked to move to the inside, which was stunning I must add. We were greated and the server seemed uninterested in us once we only ordered water. Once she took our order we never saw our server again. We had to wait so long until we saw anyone who we could just ask for a water refill. We were the only table inside and nobody was interested in serving us. I had to ask two separate people for our check, and upon arrival the check wasn't even right. Finally someone came back to fix it, and it was time for us to leave. Overall the food was awesome but definitely don't stop here if you have plans after..

I made a reservation for my sister and I to have dinner here on a Saturday night. However they unfortunately had to call me two hours prior to the reservation time to cancel on us because their kitchen had flooded. Although this was a bit annoying because it was last minute for me to find another restaurant and make a reservation on a beautiful Saturday night, they did tell me they would buy us a round of drinks if we came in for the bar. We did end up at the bar that night and they did indeed buy as a round. We will certainly be back to try their menu soon! :-)

The place is beautiful and the food is good for brunch. Drinks are good as well. We were cursed with a waitress who forgot us 90% of the time. I'm not sure if she was the only waitress working the restaurant and was busy, but even so the experience was ruined. We didn't order until we were able to call her over (20 minutes in). She forgot to bring out our cheese plate before our meal (blamed it on the bus boy). She forgot my mimosa, so another 15 minutes later she brought out a mimosa for me and my friend on the house. I almost felt bad for her because so many wrong things were happening.
The only time she rushed is when we got our check and she checked in with us to get our payment.

Most likely a place that will be packed during the warmer months ... had unseasonably warm weather and the outside area while enclosed, also had space heaters. Outside was comfortable as a result. Full service but there appears to be a self service window and you're sitting at picnic tables which I imagine would be more communal as its technically labeled a biergarten outside. Inside is very nice. Food overall was good. Not a huge menu but enough choices. Service was good. Music was loud outside and a DJ was setting up ... appears to be a real "scene and be scene place." Not surprisingly as its located in Gavenspoort Hotel which lends itself to that vibe. I would definitely go back.

Looking for a place to have brunch near Chelsea Market...not here. They couldn't find our reservation, service was slow, they were still cleaning up from the night before, and the food was mediocre. Our server, Alicia (?sp) was preoccupied, inattentive and visibly miserable; I felt sorry for her. On our way out, I "thanked" the hostess who never looked up from her cell phone to respond. Never going here again!!

Came to this restaurant because we were staying at the hotel. We had a 12pm reservation for lunch and when we arrived the tables were empty. It was a very cold day and the restaurant was freezing. We were told it was because of the doors to the Beer Garden, their outdoor seating area, did not close well. We wanted to sit in a corner on a banquette to be warm but we were told all of those seats (the majority of the restaurant) were reserved (never mind that we too had a reservation) so we sat in the cold middle of the room as we were in a bit of a hurry to get to our spa appointments at the hotel spa and did not wish to leave the building. We ordered eggs benedict which came overcooked and a bit cool. While we ate lunch only one other couple sat down (also at one of the middle tables). We were out of there before 1pm. Place was still empty.
