The Chef and I
Folks can choose to order off the menu or do a chef’s tasting seven days a week.
We offer a chef’s tasting at three levels: three, five, or seven courses; a culinary experience comprised of what’s in season and what the chefs are inspired to share with you that week.
Additionally, we offer regular menus for lunch, brunch, dinner, and happy hour. Executive Chef Chris Rains and his staff carefully curate these menus seasonally.
Counter (Show Kitchen) seating is limited and generally require a reservation. If you desire Counter (Show Kitchen) seating, please indicate in the special requests section of your reservation.
We have a 24 hour cancellation policy. Any reservations changed/ cancelled within 24 hours of that reservation is subject to a $20 per seat charge.

Unbelievable food and service. However, It was very hot, felt about 80F.
Everything was wonderful especially Brandon who made us feel very comfortable!
Great time... met new people, service and the food was delicious.
Firsttime here but enjoyed everything about it - food was great and so were the staff!
Exceptional. One of the best meals we've had in a while. 100% will go back.
We ordered the 7 course tasting menu and enjoyed every single bite! Highly recommend!
Anniversary visiting from out of town
Sitting at the counter and being able to watch and interact with the the very cordial chefs while they worked was a great experience. Our appetizer and meals were both outstanding and plentiful. But they need to maybe work on their dessert game a bit...
Loved everything about our experience! Food was amazing and we sat right in front of the executive chef and got to talk to him throughout dinner. Such a cool ambience and concept.
We had a tremendous experience at The Chef & I. I wish we lived closer so we could go more often! The food was outstanding. The folks behind the counter as well as our server were wonderful. My husband wanted the elk but they were out of it. They made it a point to grab a piece of meat from the back and butcher it just so he could have it. This was near the end of the night, too. Service like that really make a restaurant stand out.
Fantastic meal, loved sitting at the bar watching the chefs prepare everything.
Excellent food! I mean amazing! Chef and staff very kind and attentive and friendly.
We really enjoyed the Chef and I. The tuna was terrific and so was the duck. The sale appetizer was large and delicious. It’s crowded but are server was friendly. And we weren’t rushed at all. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
I truly enjoyed the experience. If you like to see the kitchen right in front of you and all that goes into making your food then this will be excellent for you. I took my girlfriend on our two year anniversary dinner and it was incredible. The food was top notch and I have NO complaints. Whatever you do- order the beef tartare. The only complaint I have is that we were seated at the counter seating and all the way in the corner and it was hard to get to and from our seat, but all of that was cancelled out when we received the best meals we had had in a long time. I cannot recommend this place enough- I'd say just call ahead and request to not have the corner seating on counter top.
My wife and I had an absolutely wonderful dining experience at The Chef and I. It was just one of many highlights during our Labor Day weekend in Nashville, which we were visiting for the first time ever. We were celebrating my wife's 50th birthday, so I wanted something unique for our "dress-up dinner" during our stay. I could not have picked a better place for this occasion. We sat at the kitchen counter where we could watch the chefs do their thing. What a blast that was! Everyone interacted with us and made the time to explain what specifically they were doing, even though they were all extremely busy. It really was fun to see how a kitchen operates, especially at a restaurant this popular. All of the chefs were very friendly and outgoing. With regards to the food itself, we decided to splurge and order the 7-course tasting menus. Everything was fantastic, but two items stuck out: the duck confit taquitos and the elk dish. Amazing flavors and textures. Cocktails were also really good. My wife ordered a "Dave Grohl" which was a vodka-based concoction. She said it was fantastic. Finally, a big shout out goes to our server Mike who constantly checked in on us, refilled our water glasses and was just a really nice, personable guy to talk to during our meal. All in all, a memorable experience and I would definitely come back next time we are in Music City!
What a fun restaurant! We ate at the counter overlooking the chefs at work, highly skilled staff and amazing skills in the kitchen. Excellent food and drinks. Fun atmosphere! We have told everyone about this restaurant! Can’t wait to go back next time I’m in Nashville!
The food at the The Chef and I was amazing. We had the Orange Duck Confit Ragoon Wanton, the Seared Tuna Steak, and the Scallops -- every bit of it was amazing.
However, a big selling point for The Chef and I is sitting in the dining room and perhaps even at the counter and having the opportunity to watch the kitchen prepare the food. We had a reservation for two at a "high top" table -- which I assumed would provide a good vantage point. Unfortunately, our table was to the right of the host station in a little side area -- we could barely see the rest of the dining room and had no line of sight to the kitchen.
Additionally, people without reservations were walking in and being allowed to sit at an adjacent table while they waited to be seated. In other words, our table was in the waiting area -- which completely destroyed the atmosphere and made the experience less than what it should've been.
We were encouraged to call for a reservation next time, rather than use the Open Table app -- as that would allow us to get a better understanding of where we'd be seated.
Wonderful food but an unfortunate situation with our seating that kind of ruined the experience.
Great food. Awesome setting.
A must try! The food and experience is amazing!
My husband and I were in Nashville and wanted to experience something special. We booked our reservations on open table to sit and watch chefs cook and we did not get that. When we showed up they sat us at a community table not where the chefs were at. I asked and they said we should call them for reservations instead of open table. Two other couples that booked through open table were seated on each side of us and left when they were seated there because they thought the same. Employees didn’t care that we weren’t happy. Wouldn’t recommend unless you’re fine sitting where they want to put you. Food was good though, just don’t use open table to make reservations
I had higher expectations for the food quality since I had heard such good reviews of it. Our appetizers and wine were amazing but our entrees were just ok. The short ribs were overcooked and not very good as a result. Service was fantastic and the atmosphere was fun.
Cannot recommend this dining experience enough. Service & food were great and sitting at the counter and being able to watch the chef's cook your food and answer any questions make this a true dining experience. Highly Recommend!!!
Amazing food and atmosphere! Unique dishes. Sitting at the counter is a must!
Shank was too salty to enjoy. 3 of ordered it and we all had the same thought.
I always have a lovely experience at The Chef And I. Food is always fabulous. Staff is always brilliantly educated about every dish that comes out.
This place has been on my radar for a while but I just never got it. I didn’t know what to think walking up to it since it’s located down n what looks like a former service station or garage. I loved it as soon as I walked inside. The entire staff is super down to earth and fun to talk to. We sat at the counter and therefore had a close up view of the kitchen. I sat there for a minute wondering if it would be cool to talk to the chefs while they were cooking and then they started talking to me! The food was outstanding and came in pretty big portions. I can’t wait to go back!
We took our daughter and son in law for dinner. It was so loud we couldn't even have a conversation. They sat us right next to the door. The waitress didn't seem that interested in her job. I ordered ahi tuna, it was nothing spectacular, just okay not a lot of flavor. My son in law ordered the duck which should have been medium rare was medium well to well done. My husband had the lumped crab and lobster bisque soup that should have had lumped crab. It was just a broth that looked like they skimmed off the top. My daughter had the prime rib. I don't think it was all that. I expected way more and was very disappointed in this experience. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I schedule client dinners and am glad I haven't schedule one here. BTW it doesn't matter that it is cooked out in the open, I never send food back. Don't trust the outcome. In a place like this it should be done correct the first time anyways and not have to be sent back.
Would prefer fewer ingredients and less rich sauces.
Loved sitting at the counter.
Staff are amazing.
Such an amazing spot! The food was next level, the presentation was incredible (sat at the counter), and the staff was great! Would recommend coming without any hesitation! We did the lunch special and there was so much food. All of it was incredible!
Perfect food and ambiance! I will be back for sure!
Great farm to table experience. Food choices were unique and the drinks as well. Service was amazing and we sat at the counters where they cooked and we were able to watch. I had tuna and my husband had elk. We loved both. Don’t miss out on the almond orange cake. I think it was one of the best desserts I’ve had in a long time. Very hospitable and friendly cozy restaurant ♥️👍🏼
Disappointed with the chefs choices. Value not there for the price. Shark? Is this ethically obtained?
Crispy Duck and Waffles. One of the best dishes I have ever had.
Chris Raines brings a unique vibe to the Nashville restaurant scene with top notch food in generous portions. A great dining experience. Sit at the counter to interact with Chris and all the cooks. Recommend highly.
Wait staff seemed disinterested, drinks left empty, steak order came out far below requested temperature and was a hassle to get it re-fired.
The worst was after finishing dessert, went to order another round of drinks and were told we needed to move to the bar because we had out stayed the 2 hour maximum time for dining. We didn’t eat slow, 2 of us ordered the chefs tasting, so the timing was up to them, and to be asked to leave within 10 minutes of finishing dessert is rough. Working up a $500+ tab and basically being rudely asked to leave is some of the worst service I’ve had in Nashville.
We finished our drinks at the bar and left.
The food was good, I enjoyed everything on the tasting except the liver.
Would not go back because of the service.
Everything was great and we enjoyed the experience.
Oh Nashville... what are you becoming?!? It seems this place was trying to recreate a more casual chef connected experience silimar to cat bird seat with their open counter kitchen. What a miserable miss! The noise level in this place is unbelievable. We were seated at a communal table between strangers. Everyone had to literally yell to try to converse. We requested counter seating, but they were jam packed so tightly that elbows were touching, so that didnt look appealing either. The worst issue overall was that the vent hoods were either undersized or not functioning properly, which created a thick, smelly smoke cloud throughout the whole place. We reeked of food smoke. We ordered 2 mediocre, overpriced apps and some drinks and left. The apps were uninteresting and nothing worth wasting calories on. We won't be back and won't recommend. This is a one and done place that will likely only survive because of tourists.
