The Chef and I
Folks can choose to order off the menu or do a chef’s tasting seven days a week.
We offer a chef’s tasting at two levels: five or seven courses; a culinary experience comprised of what’s in season and what the chefs are inspired to share with you that day.
Additionally, we offer regular menus for lunch, brunch, dinner, and happy hour. Executive Chef Chris Rains and his staff carefully curate these menus seasonally.
Counter (Show Kitchen) seating is limited and generally requires a reservation. If you desire Counter (Show Kitchen) seating, please select "counter" seating when you make your reservation.

Experienced the brunch yesterday and came back for dinner.
Counter seating is the perfect spot to watch the chefs prepare the meals. Staff are great!!
Meals exceptional!! Scallops and Elk the perfect entrees
I would eat there every night and twice on a Sunday !!
My son and I were visiting Vanderbilt and had an amazing meal at The Chef and I . I would highly recommend sitting at the counter to view the food prep !!! So delicious!!!
Excellent amazing brunch
Duck/Waffles to die for!! The Short Rib Benny fantastic! Bottomless Mimosa the only way!! Coffee excellent!
Great fun staff!!
Going back for dinner!’
We did the 7 course with wine pairing. Everything was wonderful.
Great service. Noise ok for conversation. Small plates were best. Lobster roll great. Smoky smell in restaurant permeated clothes. Had to leave outside to air out and then wash. Overall it was good
The food was so fresh and tasty! The service was great and everyone was so welcoming and personable. We will definitely be back!
Food was very inconsistent. One dish was too salty and the next didn’t have any at all. We had really hi hopes after reading the reviews.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! The food was just perfection! The chefs menu is a MUST! Service was incredible!
It was an amazing overall experience that exceeded expectations. The service and food were exemplary. I was recommended the Shrimp & Grits and it was outstanding! If you get there while still in season, Chef Liz's Dark Chocolate Bread Budding is devine :).
Amazing food and service. They ran pretty behind seating us, but made up for it with a complimentary appetizer. Definitely sit at the counter--culinary wizardry up close!!!
This was a restaurant where my girlfriend and I dined about 3 years ago, while it was located at the previous location in Lenox Village. It had sentimental value and was an experience which was frequently recalled with fondness. We loved the intimate nature, the food was delicious, and more than anything else, the continuous interaction with the chefs and other customers at the chef’s counter during the preparation of the meal made the evening one that was unforgettable. The new location in the gulch is a little bigger, with much more food prep space, but which allows virtually no interaction with the individuals preparing the food. It’s just a restaurant with an open grill where you can watch the food get made. We were very disappointed by the new format. the food was fine, but not memorable. Elk tenderloin was delicious and cooked perfectly, but was entenched in a sauce that didn’t allow for the enjoyment of the meat itself. Lobster bisque was lukewarm, at best. Each of us had a drink at the bar, an appetizer, salad, and entree, and the total for the night was $220+. Based on this experience, we will opt for one of the nice steakhouses in Nashville in the future for special occasions, and will likely not be returning to Chef and I.
Such a cool space and the food was amazing. Very big portions. I sat at the Counter and had a great conversation with the chefs and that was a great experience to watch them cook and ask them questions. My server Kendall was lovely. I would highly recommend.
First time at The Chef and I for us. Amazing food, great service. Everyone in the group of 6 raved about dining experience.
Tasting menu was fantastic and the open kitchen made for a fun and engaging experience! Hip space, amazing food without any of the stuffiness. Each chef spoke with us and made for a special experience. They were able to accommodate gluten free also. The fig I e cream was truly the very best ice cream I have ever tasted..
The Chef and I was absolutely exceptional. My wife and I had the tasting menu with wine pairings. Highly recommend.
Great food. Great interaction with the staff. Top notch staff + experience.
Best meal I've ever had! I ate here on a trip last month and knew when I came back for a girls' trip this was #1 on my list of places to take my friends. Both times the food was absolutely wonderful!
Fantastic food. Sat at the counter overlooking the kitchen. Great experience. Chefs were engaging and clearly love their jobs. Waiter was excellent. One of the best meals in Nashville. Would definitely go back.
Cocktails and bartenders were great. Overall decent food but my daughter’s scallops were so salty she couldn’t eat the dinner. Fortunately they took it off the bill. But it was her 17th birthday so that was kind of a bummer and they didn’t bring piece of cake w/ candle to celebrate which I thought they said they would when I told them it was her birthday.
We were seated at the counter on a corner so we could talk with each other. (2 couples). Our waitress explained the menu and answered all our questions with a smile. The food was amazing especially the roasted cauliflower ♥️. It was such a treat to watch the preparation and speak with the chefs as they prepared the meals. Everyone worked efficiently and with a smile, they truly enjoyed what they were doing. It was a fantastic experience all the way around
I really loved the look of the restaurant. It was our first time and we were not sure what to expect. Its community dining so , I was thrown off a bit. It worked out well though, and we made some new friends. It is a bit loud but once we settled in it was fine. The food was really good. Excellent choices all around. Its different than any restaurant in Nashville. The appetizers were my favorites, yes try the Lobster roll!
The entrees had a lot of flavor and were on the rich side but so tasty. My only dissatisfaction was the dessert that I chose, chocolate bread pudding. It just wasn't the style I imagined. Not bad, just not traditional. We will definitely be returning!
OMG! I love, love, love this place. The food is OUTSTANDING and the atmosphere is lively and engaged. Our server, Melissa, took amazing care of us. The drinks are the real deal. That salmon appetizer was divine. The salads delicious and bountiful. My scallop entree was just right. Overall, this meal was definitely a highlight of our trip to Nashville.
Everything was just delicious and the service great. Definitely worth splurging
definitely one of the best restaurants in nashville!
The food and experience was fantastic. Sit at the counter and watch your food being prepared! Do not miss out on the cocktails here, I recommended the Dave Grohl! Also, make sure to order the cauliflower app!!!
All of us really enjoyed The Chef and I. My only tiny complaint was that it was a bit chilly inside, the temps outside were cold as well. Very creative food combinations which I like. I had the smoked hanger steak, the best I’ve ever eaten! Would definitely go again next time I’m in Nashville.
We had a spectacular experience at The Chef and I. It was our first time to dine there. We had the caramelized cauliflower and smoked salmon for appetizers. Both were delicious. We then had a lobster coconut bisque which was one of the best bisques I’ve ever had. It was a little sweet but when you ate it with the accompanying bread, it was a perfect balance. We then had scallops and the Sea Bass special. Both were served on dirty rice with tiny Peruvian peppers and were fabulous. We had an orange cake for dessert that was interesting as it was served with basil and candied oranges. It wasn’t my favorite but others at the table liked it. The service was great and the ambiance was fun and relaxed. We will definitely eat there again the next time we’re in Nashville.
My second time at Chef and I. Can’t wait to come back. One of the things I love most about this restaurant is the employees. When sitting at the tables around the kitchen, all of the chefs are so friendly and you can watch and ask questions about what they are making. It is so interesting to watch the whole process. I love this place.
Great food and great service from our waiter and Chef Peter. Loved being able to chat with the chefs. Can’t wait to come back and try more!
I think we had too great of an expectation. While the food was very good and it was fun watching the chefs at work, it wasn’t as good as it should have been for the price. That being said, I would go back and try it again...the potential is high!
Absolutely loved it! Sit at the counter and watch the magic happen. Cauliflower and goat cheese app was extraordinarily good. Even my carnivore friends enjoyed.
Food pacing was perfect. Service was stellar. Everything we ate was amazing! Spicy arugula and apple salad was my fave. We will be back soon!
This restaurant was fabulous all around. We sat at a high top as it was as it was business dinner. Although If it were only 2 of us we would have loved to have sat at the bar! It was a true experience. The atmosphere was awesome and the space unique. The food and service were superb. We loved every single thing we ordered. I’m still thinking about the taquitos (elk) and the scallops!
Great service and food!
Wonderful Experience watching our meals being prepared and the food was outstanding
It’s always a great experience here at the Chef and I! The staff is friendly food is as beautiful as it tastes great! I love this place! I always get the Chef’s course meals ... you get a little bit of everything!
O.M.G -- ABSOLUTELY no comparison. This was by far my BEST restaurant experience ever|!!! Sit at the counter and watch them prepare your food! Ask your chef to prepare something HE or SHE would want to have......you will NOT be disappointed, that includes your favorite cocktail. I had the Elk and my friend had the duck. Melted in your mouth. Bottomless Mimosas topped off our brunch. GO GO GO GO GO. That's all I have to say.
Amazing food. Made so.e,new,friends. Chef Pete and Todd the Bartender were absolutely a pleasure to be around! Mosr definitely going back!
