The Chef and I is built on a love story between two people that began 15 years ago in Nashville, Tennessee.
Chris and Erica Rains grew the company from just the two of them to now more than fifty employees (family members) and many years of having the most amazing clients and customers in town!

We serve innovative cuisine in a fun environment. Guests can choose to order off the menu or do a chef's tasting any day of the week. A private chef’s table and an interactive show kitchen in addition to regular dining is what you’ll find at The Chef & I Nashville Midtown!

We are also able to accomodate walk-in guests in our lounge, backstage bar and other dining areas but there may be a wait depending on the day of week and time. Prime times are longer of a wait for walk-ins.

We have a 24-hour cancellation policy. Any reservations canceled within 24 hours from date/time is subject to a $20 per seat charge.

    This was one of the most memorable experiences in my entire stay at Nashville. Me and my spouse thoroughly enjoyed the dinner. Our waiter Addison, made this extra special by sharing his personal notes with us to inform us of what we would experience in each of the chef's preparations.

    This is what you can do better if you are serving a 7 course chef menu: 1- Add an amuse-bouche to set the ambience and show chef's glimpse. 2- Add a palate cleanser to transition between the white and red meats. 3- Improve the plating. It is too basic for more than 4 stars. 4- Please change the silverware between plates (or don't ask for more than 4 starts) 5 - The 7 course menu shall include a dessert.

    We sat at the bar upstairs and enjoyed watching the staff prepared apps and drinks. Food was outstanding and our waiter was very personable. The big screen TV was a bit much - I’d rather see beautiful art. Bar stools were uncomfortable for my husband .

    The counter to watch the chefs is really special. The food is wonderful and the energy is upbeat. Everyone went out of their way to make us comfortable. We had a great night in Nashville!

    Chef and I was underwhelming, to say the least. My wife ordered the special halibut that was overcooked and lacking flavor. I am vegan and asked for suggestions on what to order. What came out was a piece of cauliflower on toast and bland mushrooms on another piece of toast. The camera of the kitchen was off-putting. We watched the chef use pans he had dropped on the floor. He also touched raw meat then wiped his hands on a towel that he use to wipe down his entire station. The lack of care throughout the kitchen was obvious. With a menu that changes daily, the cooks don't get to finesse and perfect their dishes. Disappointing.

    Sitting at the open cooking area downstairs and watching the chefs prepare our tasting menu was a great culinary experience. The food was unique and delicious and beautifully prepared and presented.

    The food was good. The service was excellent. Food was not as good as at the last location. There was no Kocek so we had a hanger very expensive coats from the back of tiny chairs that were very uncomfortable. Also, there was no hooks available for purses unless you wanted to sit them on the floor. A little tweaking, and it could be much better.

    The lighting is so bad almost like fluorescent ruins the vibe—no candles on table—something has to change—Terrible lighting! Nice size portions but menu is so limited for a la carte but tasting menu strange (ie: elk) drinks ok but server didn’t bring second round of drinks until we were done with meal. Great concept watching the chefs kitchen and has potential but something is not great about it. Won’t rush back.

    Some of the food courses were excellent others good and all a little too overpowered with spices that should have enhanced the main dish but instead took over. The service was near atrocious with wine pairings not being timely, servers bringing plates not able to explain the ingredients and in the end being served a dish that was not supposed to be the final course. When questioned about it, they acknowledged it was partially incorrect (the meat was right but suave incorrect) and took back to the kitchen. They brought the meat back served properly but when I turned the meat over could still see remnants of the previous incorrect sauce. Unacceptable! The course needed to be redone properly and they could not be bothered to properly correct the oversight. This was our second time going to this establishment and will certainly be the last. If you are seeking upscale dining I urge you to look elsewhere.

    One of our favorite dining spots in Nashville; we make it a point to dine there whenever we're in town. They moved to new location this year; a significant upgrade over what was a quaint and neat little place (a garage in a previous life). The best seat is around the display kitchen in the dining room - we always ask to be seated there. You can talk to the cooks while you watch them prepare dishes. The display kitchen is now just for appetizers, small plates, and deserts - the main kitchen is in another room now but you can watch them on the large flat screen above the display kitchen and we were invited/encouraged to step down to the kitchen if we wanted a closer view. But the real draw though is the food - creative dishes, attractively presented; some regional others new American cuisine (the off-menu, daily specials are always enticing - my spouse selected one and it was superb). Nice wine list - we always find something we like, whether it's an old favorite or something new. The service is always topnotch - servers take special pains to explain the menu and are always on hand yet never intrusive - and if you are seated at the display kitchen, you also have the cooks to explain not only the dishes they are preparing but also what's going on in the main kitchen. They obviously hire those cooks with the personality and people skills to go along with their culinary chops. It's just great fun.

    Excellent dining experience!!! There are three kitchens. You can watch the chefs at work up close and another on a large tv screen. Wonderful experience. The food was stupendous!! My wife and I had the 7 course tasting. Tuna, pork, lobster bisque, lamb, duck, elk and ostrich. All courses were stupendous!!! This was not just dinner, but a true dining experience. A definite restaurant to visit in Nashville!!!

    This is the first time we've been to the new location. Having been to the previous location and had wonderful meals, we were excited to come back. Unfortunately, we were largely disappointed. The experience is different. You no longer have an intimate setting and a direct view to see the artistry of the chef (there is a TV feed now). The aesthetic was a bit dated and felt cheap. That wouldn't be a huge deal if the food was at the stellar level it was in the past. Again, unfortunately, that was not the case. The food was good, but not near the amazing level we'd experienced before.

    We were celebrating our 32nd Anniversary with our customary dinner (all years except 2020 due to COVID). We had to ask to be seated at a table (vs. at the counter when lots of tables were available). We each ordered the Chef's five course suggested meal. We let the staff know we were not in a rush. However, each dish was brought to us IMMEDIATELY after our consuming the previous dis - this even after requesting they slow down bringing us our dishes. Some of the dishes that should have been warm/hot came out cold.

    The ambiance has completely changed with the new location. The old location was homey and felt like every visit was like dining with close friends. This was much more sterile. The food did not seem as good and my fish was overdone. Our waiter did not tell us about the fish and pasta specials but had to be asked. He was not as strong as waitstaff we experienced at the old location. We do not live in Nashville but when we come up we always take the opportunity to come to this restaurant and we’re sad not to have the same excellent experience we have always had.

    We were lucky and received seating at the kitchen pass window. We were treated to an amazing experience of talking with the chef and crew as they turned out perfect dish after perfect dish for the restaurant. Every , and I mean , everything we were served was amazing. We even got to taste a few extra things not on our five course meal. It ended being like 8 courses 😂. Enjoyed the food, loved the kitchen and their banter and how they included us a little in the goings on.

    Two of us had the 8 course tasting menu. All items were served warm at best. The sauces were so overpowering they totally obliterated the taste of the meat and Fish. The ravioli was so poorly cooked a knife was needed to cut it. My wife had the tile fish. That was excellent.

    An absolutely perfect experience. The whole staff was top notch and the food showed the Chefs’ passions for great food..I highly recommend the tasting menu, especially if you can get a seat at the kitchen. By far, one of the best food experiences I’ve ever had and will be back the next time I’m in Nashville!

    We own restaurants and bars and I KNOW it is difficult to get experienced help; however, seat fewer people (take less reservations) and make the experience tremendous for those that are there. I had to ask the hostess to find our waitress 2 times...once for a menu and drinks and the other time for the bill. I still tipped 20% and I am not sure why other than I didn't want her to think I was cheap. I did express my dis satisfaction with service to our server.

    This was more than just a dinner - what an incredible experience. The chefs interact with and prepare the food in front of you! We had the 7 course tasting menu with the wine pairings, a couple apps and the pasta special. Everything was creative and DELICIOUS! Bravo to the Chef and I!

    My wife and I recently celebrated our first anniversary in Nashville and there was only one place on our list to dine the Chef & I. Super easy to book at their new location. Listed in the notes it was our anniversary and upon our arrival we were surprised to be seated at the chefs table kitchen side. My wife selected the 5 course and I took the 7 course. Addison was our hosts a d let me tell you he made our night. The conversations flowed from start to finish. Thank you Addison for making our night! Our chefs, Erick and Erin (sorry for the name spellings) took us on a magical tasting through the night. The set menu was amazing and chef Erick surprised us with not one, but two off the menu samples of what can only be described as perfection! By the end of our dinning experience our bellies were full, smiles in our faces and a tear in my eye. Attention James Beard foundation and Michelin Guide, please consider the Chef & I for selection into your prestigious alumni!!
