Disappointed after hearing such wonderful things about this restaurant. The food was very good. The building is lovely, but the service is not. It is very noisy and crowded. It is not a fine dining experience as many write ups would lead you to believe. I my opinion; If you like Abigail’s in Simsbury, you would like The Charles. If you prefer Milwright’s upstairs dining, you would not.

We ordered oysters, popcorn chicken, black and blue brussels and scotch egg as appetizers. All four were good. File mignon, duck a l'orange and pork tournedos were our choices for main entries. All were excellent. Our waitress was superb, as well as a team which helped her. The music was nice and not laud. It was a very pleasant and smooth experience altogether. Highly recommend.

This was our first time eating here and we wasn’t disappointed. Food was great and at proper temperature and you will get more than what you pay for. Hostess were pleasant and friendly and waiters and waitresses were very nice and friendly. I would recommend calling in a reservation and getting there early because parking is on the tight side, That would be my only issue. Overall a great experience, Looking to go back and try other dishes.

We had a wonderful birthday celebration for my wife at the Charles. It is an upscale, yet not pretentious restaurant in an old very nicely decorated old Victorian home.

This was our first time here for lunch. We were surprised at how busy it was for a weekday lunch. The server was great and fully knowledgeable of the menu. Our tuna tartare was perfectly prepared. The vegetable soup was loaded with veggies and had a very good broth with a kick to it. Everyone loved the sandwiches and entrees. Hard to decide which was the best. Overall, an excellent venue. Parking is the only drawback.

The Charles has a lovely vibe. It’s not drowning in gray or stark decor like many restaurants have done over the past 5 years. There’s a warmth that speaks to what was once a home and a ‘welcome’ that suits all the purposes this property has served over the years. The staff was polite and efficient. The food was excellent. The portions were generous, not gluttonous and the ingredients used were clearly fresh and well prepared. I look forward to going back and sharing this new to us dining spot with friends.

We choose to sit in the bar at the comfy booth in the back. Our waitperson was friendly, knowledgeable and provided excellent service. We had great mocktails, great choices for those choosing no alcohol. Appetizers were bread, cauliflower so yummy, and we split the pasta special. Delicious, pasta cooked perfectly, most places overcook. Chicken and dumplings as well as the short ribs… 5 stars. Will go back!!!!

Love this spot - very classy but fun at the same time. So many unique events especially under the large outdoor tent when warmer weather arrives. Cute upscale lawn games and Adirondack chairs so you can sip, chat, and play croquet, etc.

Second visit here in 2 weeks! Food, service and ambiance are all excellent, but a little noisy. Ordered a bottle of wine from the wine list, all out of it. Ordered a second one, same thing. Third bottle's a charm though. Will definitely be back!

I ordered a steak frites medium rare. It was a good piece of meat, but cut poorly, whether that's the butcher's fault or the chef, I don't know. It was well done on one end and rare- bloody- at the other. I kept hoping for the best but with each bite, it became clearer that it was not properly cooked. I wish that I had sent it back, but when you are having a meal and it's an emotional occasion, it's sometimes hard to think about that, much less do it. My friend had the root vegetable bolognese, which she said wasn't satisfactory, but didn't go into detail, and I didn't want to dwell on it. The drinks were quite good- Open Table should add that as a category. Sadly, I can't recommend this restaurant, despite all of its wonderful qualities. Steaks are expensive menu items, yet relatively easy to prepare. If you can't get a steak right, it may be time to pare down the menu or find adequate staff.

We were celebrating our anniversary and it was suggested by a friend to go to the Charles. We could not be happier with this suggestion. I had mentioned that it was our Anniversary. They seated us upstairs in a semi private table overlooking main st. I was very happy with that. After ordering drinks, the waitress arrived with 2 complementary glasses of champagne. Now I was impressed. Dinner was delicious! And the lemon meringue dessert was to die for. All in all we felt like we were cared for and it felt like going out to dinner in the old days. I highly recommend the Charles as a treat to the misses. PS, the place was hopping with the younger crowd… So much fun.

This place never disappoints. Great value, great taste, great ambiance and great service. I had the Sunday Gravy and the bowl was huge and the taste was out of this world. My wife had Shrimp and Grits which was equally as wonderful. We shared the cauliflower appetizer and it was very tasty. My daughter had the BLT and a salad. I didn't taste it but her plate was spotless. Another great night at The Charles.

I am on a strict no oil no nuts vegan medical diet. The waiter did a great job of understanding my dietary needs, checking the contents of certain dishes, and communicating my needs to the chef. They substituted balsamic vinegar for my salad dressing on the excellent beet salad. The chef made me a special no oil pasta with steamed veggies. It was very tasty all considering. I appreciated them making me an iff menu entree at last minute. My husband had the shepherds pie and said it was excellent as was his salad and the chocolate torte. This was our second time eating here and the first time for lunch they were also very accommodating to my medical diet and we were both pleased with our food. The service is top notch and the ambiance is great too!

This was our first time there. the waitress was wonderful and very helpful. All the food was delicious. The menu was varied so to suit all food interests in family. Loved the chocolate goodie they gave me with a candle for my birthday. Will definitely go back.

Make sure you have reservations and get to the location early to find parking. Very limited street parking, and small restaurant parking lot. Very busy on Sunday, but the food and service were, as always, outstanding! Very well looked after and checked on. The staff really care about your dining experience. Great food and beverage choices. Definitely a place to visit.

The drinks were fabulous and every item we ordered was delicious! Try the whipped ricotta, deviled eggs, and more! Can’t wait to return! It’s a bit loud on a Friday night, but you get used to it. Love this place!

Our server was Michael. He was very attentive and was very knowledgeable about the menu. Cocktail's very great and the wine was perfect. We enjoyed the tuna tartare appetizer. Seafood chowder was excellent and the Charles Sunday sauce was delicious. Passion fruit tiramisu was amazing. The place was very busy but Michael made us feel that we were his only table. We will definitely be returning.
