Food is great. Noise level is so high it’s hard to converse across the table.
The food was good, but the service could have better. They did not have enough wait staff and our server was hard to find when we needed anything. Also it was muy spouse's Birthday. When I reserved the table they asked if it was a special occasion. I said it was, but no mentioned was made. I asked the hostess why no mention was made. Her answer was she told our server and did not seem to care that I was disappointed. Sometimes the "little things" make a big difference.
The room on the second floor facing the outdoor seating was extremely loud. The music from the speakers was very loud and that caused all people at tables to talk louder to be heard. The room itself is terribly noisy because all sounds bounce off the walls and ceiling.
Management needs to correct this for a better dining experience.
The Charles is amazing. The food, service and ambiance were fantastic. I love that it’s close to our house.
I can't say enough about The Charles. It's always a fun time; the food is never disappointing and the service the best.
Amazing food, amazing drinks, the decor is beautiful! I can’t wait to go back! ❤️
Great drinks, great food, great service 10/10 would recommend
Wish they could have had lunch menu. Almost ordered off the kids menu. Would have been great if a burger was at least available.
We picked a very busy night to try The Charles. It was just too busy for our waiter to give the proper service. We will try again on a less busy night.
2 dishes inedible- calimari rubbery and Veggie tagine- too spicy-not stated on menu
Service slow-not fault of waitress
Noise level overwhelming in tent outside- unpleasant when trying to talk w friends.
Food was tasty, but needed to send the french onion soup back TWICE because it was not hot - literally could hold a finger in it. When finally heated, it was delicious. The chicken was cooked to perfection and was was still hot with a nice crispy skin outside and not at all dry inside. The dumplings/gnocchi and mushrooms on the other hand were not warm (never mind hot). When asked to heat them, they took the plate (putting the chicken on a side plate) and returned 10 minutes later with a bowl of mushrooms and gnocchi that was about 50% broth (but it was hot). I then needed to ask for a plate so I could have both the chicken and the mushrooms together. My husband's appetizer (homemade sausage) and entree (cioppino) were terrific - both hot and tasty. However, when clearing the appetizer, they removed all his silverware. With no server around, he grabbed a fork and knife from another table. When he told the server he did this, she replied "that's okay". No apology, just a shrug - like this was a normal thing. Maybe that's okay for Olive Garden, but not when charging $30+ for entrees and $12+ for soup/appetizers. Talented chef, but the kitchen and servers need some major training.
Just a perfect lunch at The Charles! Of course, a beautiful afternoon in Old Wethersfield in the Fall didn't hurt. Everyone at The Charles was so friendly and welcoming, the interior is beautiful and the food was exceptional. I would tell anyone to enjoy a meal at this wonderfully restored colonial home.
They did a wonderful job tending to my party and everything was delicious the ambiance was wonderful and they brought my cake out at perfect timing!! The waiter did awesome at taking our pics to capture my special birthday dinner!! It was my 1st time but it will most definitely not be my last time!
The Charles is an excellent restaurant, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The food is fabulous! We will go back soon!
Beautiful restaurant, friendly service and excellent food and cocktails!
Food was outstanding! As was the atmosphere. A great spot in a quaint town.
We had a beautiful evening at the Charles, sitting outside in the tent. We ate early so there were more children than usual, so there was some noise. But everybody was having a good time, and it was a happy experience . The food was excellent and the service was good. It's an excellent restaurant.
Excellent service and unique food preparation.
Visited on a Sunday evening & even the outside of the property was welcoming. The food was perfectly prepared, I had the steak & frites and my date had the duck breast. Even after the staff/chefs were inundated from customers in the area for the scarecrow festival all day, the prep & presentation of our meals were spot on. We shared the deviled eggs as an appetizer-they were also outstanding. Service was great by the waitstaff & the young busboy was efficient and very pleasant all evening. Timing of service was also great & never felt rushed.
I wish I had visited during the summer to enjoy the lawn with its welcoming patio furniture set on the lawn in intimate groupings.
Certainly a rising star & I'm pleased to add this gem to the lineup of restaurants to visit again.
Wonderful. Service was excellent as was the food. Would definitely recommend!
First visit. Beautiful decor and nice atmosphere. The menu is very original with a lot of great choices. Our group had the shrimp and grits, the Waldorf salad, the French onion soup and autumn salad as well as the mussels and the bass special. Everything was delicious and prepared to perfection. The service was outstanding and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. We will be back.
Dinner was amazing! Food was delicious. Drinks were very creative and well paired. This restaurant is definitely a favorite of locals, I can understand why! Nice romantic dinner spot or for the Friday night meeting of friends. Will definitely be going back again soon!!
Nice atmosphere. Chopped salad appetizer with cranberries and fennel very banal. Flavorless lettuce. French onion soup was a different take, basically three steamed dumplings in a half cup of broth. Salmon entree was very good, nicely cooked and flavor. Cod with risotto was somewhat bland. Sat at a drafty 2 person table at top of stairs. Cold air from front door made it chilly. Large Table next to us was loud an vulgar but that’s not any fault of the restaurant. Seemed short staffed and our young waiter was doing double duty also clearing tables. Understand that staffing is a problem everywhere though, so it’s to be expected. High school girl who delivered appetizers essentially threw the plates onto table. Perhaps the soup bowl was hot, I guess, but it was abrupt. Hoped for a better experience for our 28th anniversary. Pretty place, nice outdoor space if weather is nice.
Beautiful location great service. A bit loud but to be expected from everyone enjoying themselves. Perhaps the staff should explain the historic of the building perhaps it would add to the experience
Our first visit to The Charles. Beautiful inside, excellent service. I was disappointed with my Autumn Chopped Salad. It was cut up romaine (all white, no green romaine) with a light dressing that was flavorless and maybe 5 pumpkin seeds and 5 dried cranberries. I had a piece of salmon on top to make it a meal, but ended up eating the salmon with the risotto that my husband didn't finish with his dish. I left still craving a nice hefty Autumn salad... I also ordered truffle pommes frites as a side. Again I was disappointed. The fries were big, fat, like you get at a burger joint, not thin, melt in your mouth like I expected from an upscale restaurant. They had the flavor of truffle oil and a bit of parmesan and parsley, but basically were just run of the mill fries. I will go back, but will make better choices!
Went for an early dinner Saturday night. Sat at the bar, Chelsea was bartending.
Such a busy night but drinks and food were great. Try Chelsea's version of an Aperol Spritz...it does not disappoint!!
We may have already left a review for The Charles, but this was our first indoor dining experience. When making the reservation I specified it was our anniversary, and every member of the staff said something nice. The owner (who is always out and about and engaging with diners) stopped by our table for a few minutes as well. We were seated at ‘The Chef’s Table’ in an alcove overlooking Main Street, and it was private and romantic. We dined a few days after the fall menu change. As usual, the menu choices did not disappoint; corn chowder was delicious, oysters were well prepared. My wife had the homemade sausage with broccoli and pappardelle pasta- their sausage is amazing. I had the mahi-mahi special which was also excellent. Cocktails were top notch, and we finished with cappuccinos and shared banana brioche bread pudding. The Charles has become one of our favorite restaurants, we look forward to our next visit.
It’s a beautiful location with a well thought out menu. It is quite obvious this restaurant is a labor of love. The owner was very present and engaging with customers and staff. We loved it!
Special seating for a Anniversary
Dinner was great
Food was awesome & service impeccable
Brian was great! Took good care of us. Food was delicious.
We were celebrating a birthday, it was so fun , everyone is so nice , the food is so incredible, such a great time , can't wait to go back and check out the fall menu
My husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary here. Our server Brian was amazing.! The food was superb! The manager even came over to wish us a Happy Anniversary. The Charles was an amazing place to celebrate our anniversary. They took such good care of us on our special night. Will definitely return soon and recommend to all our family and friends.
Our first dining experience, (lunch) was great. Our dinner one, not so much. The bed that the salmon sat on was so, so. I didn't think it paired well. Next time I will order salmon only and choose my sides. My husbands steak was fine as was the creamed spinach. We would like to see some simple dessert options. Beautiful interior and location. I remember it back in the 50s when it was privately owned. I think that they would be pleased.
Steaks were under done! Even after they were sent back, they were still under done. Seems like when they get busy they push out dinners too fast! Service was very good, and we got free deserts as an apology for the Steaks! BTW - their bread is sensational, Caesar Salad, not so much. Probably give them one more try.
Fra Diavalo is made with crushed red pepper, not powder.
We went for a date night but the noise level was such that we had to yell across the small table to hear one another. The food was disappointing for the price and trying too hard to be trendy. I ordered the onion soup, which was beef consume with onion dumplings (not what I was expecting and okay at best) and the sea food pot pie (at $35) which I was very excited for but not good at all and I only had a few bites (they refunded me for it which was appreciated). The drinks were good. I won't be going back there and will not be recommending this place to anyone. The service was good and the place was packed so maybe it was just me.
Ingredients for each entree should be listed on the menu. I ordered the seafood pot pie expecting it to be like a traditional pot pie in a creamy base. It was served in a spicy tomato
Base which I could not eat. Had I known I would not have ordered it. The waiter was not too happy with me when I sent it back. But had I known from the menu what it was like I would not have ordered it. I substituted cod which was delicious. My husband very much enjoyed the hanger steak but served with French fries that was rather bland. The front stairs are incredibly dangerous. Way too steep without a railing for support. We are not old but when leaving my husband had a missed step and there was nothing to grab on to. Luckily he was able to recover himself but the front steps are a hazard! People coming in said the same thing. The place is lovely and good vib. . Hope to come back and experience Something more conducive to us. Thank you!
Good place to dine. Parking a problem for handicapped. We had fish & chips. Coating terrific but fish was mushy.
My wife and I enjoyed a nice meal for our anniversary. It's nice to have a good restaurant so close to where we live. The even gave us a free glass of champagne to celebrate our anniversary.
Great overall place to go out regardless of your reason.
