This 67-year-old gem (longest continuously run restaurant in Skokie, IL.) The Charcoal Oven is worth visiting, not just for it"s great food, but for a nostalgic taste of what restaurants used to be. The Charcoal Oven is 100 percent authentic. The original retro neon sign out front, dining room, and vintage bar all harken back to an era of supper clubs, classic American food, and big powerful automobiles.
Today the Charcoal Oven enjoys a resurgence under the direction of founder Phillip Georgouses’s daughter Maria and her husband Rich. Under Maria & Rich, the Restaurant has been carefully restored to be the original north shore supper club that Phil had originally envisioned.

Charcoal Oven is an institution with generous portions, booths that seem suited to a Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra era of comfort, and traditions of service and fare. It's a terrific guys' place that we see groups of women enjoying, too. With her husband, the daughter of the late founder continues the traditions.

This is a fun throw back restaurant. The staff is attentive and kind and the food is delicious. I had the scampi that was good but nothing special. The appetizer, potatoes and vegetable were good. The salad is literally some pieces of iceberg lettuce, dressing was good. Two people had the Greek chicken and one had the baked chicken. They all loved theirs and I have to admit, I was a little jealous :-) We will be back!

Food was terrible and didn’t like being served potato chips as my potato and a little bit of green lettuce with nothing else as salad

I love this restaurant. Very old school in the best way, with delicious food, and charming service by the second generation family owners. I used to live closer and went more often, but now when I do go it is always worth the extra travel time.

The Charcoal Oven is unique. It's been there for almost 100 years and has been in the Georgouses family for 75 of those. The menu is still in the script of Phil, whose daughter Marie now runs the shop with her husband. Do expect: terrific food, proudly and lovingly prepared; conversation with Marie; and a true supper club atmosphere. Don't expect: "craft cocktails"; ferns; buzz; modern décor. It's charming and historic and I wouldn't change a thing.
