We were quite disappointed with our meal and the actual venue. When we arrived at the Chapel restaurant we were told it was closed and we would be eating in the Champagne Bar instead. We were not told this before. Also the menu was different and had very limited options. The Champagne Bar was not appropriate to eat in and we were the only diners. They had awful background music playing and as we were the only diners it was very intrusive and annoying to listen to. Overall we would not return as it was disappointing as The Chapel was much nicer and more comfortable to dine at. The food was only ok. We had calamari to start and the breadcrumbs were mostly burnt or nearly burnt. Neither of us complained as it was already too late to cancel and walk out. From start to finishing we were only there for 50 minutes and this suited us as we couldn’t wait to leave.

Dear Sarah, Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry your visit did not meet expectations, particularly as you had hoped to dine in The Chapel itself. While lunch is served in our Champagne Bar by design, we regret the lack of advance notice, the ambience, and the food quality fell short. Your comments have been noted, and we hope you’ll consider giving us another chance in the future. Warmest Regards, Wilson Koh Assistant General Manager The Bodmin Jail Hotel

This is a novel venue, newly refurbished and attractive however the entry on open table does not reflect the lunch offering, which is in a small pleasant bar, not the main chapel. There is a basic lunch menu of good standard and good value and the staff are excellent. The parking is directly next to the hotel and badly served by satnav which sent us round the back of Bodmin Jail. It was an enjoyable experience.
    The ChapelResponded 1 day ago
Dear Nicola, Thank you for your thoughtful review. We’re pleased to hear you enjoyed our venue, service, and lunch menu, though we regret the OpenTable listing and satnav caused some confusion about location and offering. Your comments help us improve guest communication, and we’re glad the experience overall was enjoyable. We hope to welcome you back soon. Not the best fillet steak in the world. All a bit bland way over priced for the quality offered. Far much better out there for the same price. Look at your reviews you must be doing something drastically wrong. Lovely building just not high end food.
    The ChapelResponded 1 day ago
Dear Nigel, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. While we’re pleased you appreciated the character of our building, we’re truly sorry to hear the cuisine did not meet your expectations, particularly with regard to the fillet steak and overall value. Feedback like yours helps us identify where we can refine the experience. We hope you might consider giving us another opportunity to deliver a visit that better reflects the high standards we strive for. Extortionate prices for the small amount of food you get, £20 for a glass of wine is scandalous
    The ChapelResponded 1 day ago
Dear Caroline, Thank you for sharing your feedback. While we’re pleased you appreciated the ambience and chose to recommend us, we’re sorry to hear you felt the pricing and portion sizes did not meet your expectations. We understand that perceptions of value are deeply personal, and we take your comments seriously as we continue reviewing our offerings. We hope you’ll consider joining us again so we may provide an experience that feels more aligned with the quality we aim to deliver. Great ambience, service decent, however on reflection the fish cake starter was sub par, needed to be hotter and dessert was not what I expected from description on the menu, was more sultana tart than apple crumble and I don't like sultana's. The pork and beef was excellent.
The ChapelResponded on May 11, 2025
Dear Chris, Thank you for your review and for highlighting both the positives and areas where we can improve. We're glad you enjoyed the pork and beef, and appreciate your comments regarding the fish cake and dessert, which we’ve shared with our culinary team. We hope to welcome you back for a more seamless experience soon. Warmest Regards, Wilson Koh Assistant General Manager The Bodmin Jail Hotel

Booked a Dark afternoon tea expecting it to be at least a bit different. The only ‘dark’ thing about it was the teacups and the coffin shaped brownie. It was served in the champagne room which meant we had to be sat on tiny tables, having the tea on the table next to us and keep reaching across. Scones were like rocks. It’s not worth the £29 price point and feel like it wasn’t as advertised
The ChapelResponded on May 11, 2025
Dear Kate, Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with us. We’re sincerely sorry to hear that your Dark Afternoon Tea did not meet your expectations, and we appreciate your candid feedback. At The Chapel Restaurant, we strive to deliver memorable and imaginative experiences, and it’s clear we fell short on this occasion. Your comments regarding the thematic elements, presentation, and setting have been noted and shared with our culinary and service teams for immediate review. We’re also sorry to hear that the scones did not meet our usual standards and apologise for any inconvenience this caused. We would truly value the opportunity to welcome you back for a much-improved visit. Warmest Regards, Wilson Koh Assistant General Manager The Bodmin Jail Hotel

Overall our experience at The Chapel was average. The staff were very pleasant but our drinks order was mixed up and our side order didn’t come at the same time as our main course. Staff kept mixing up our orders with that of the neighbouring table despite the restaurant being fairly quiet. We enjoyed our food but the service was a bit hit and miss.
The ChapelResponded on May 11, 2025
Dear Charlotte, Thank you for sharing your recent experience at The Chapel. While we're pleased to hear you enjoyed the food and found our team pleasant, we regret that the service on this occasion did not meet the high standards we strive for. Your feedback regarding order accuracy and timing has been shared with the team to ensure we deliver a more seamless experience moving forward. We do hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back for a more polished visit. Warmest Regards, Wilson Koh Assistant General Manager The Bodmin Jail Hotel

Beautiful venue, great menu and very nice food, beautifully presented. The Pannacotta was out of this world! Definately will be back soon. Vouchers bought already for my mother-in-laws Mothers Day gift - for afternoon tea - I'm sure they'll love it too! Excellent, and thank you
