Returned to the Chalkboard to celebrate our 31st anniversary at the restaurant where we had our first date. The bruschetta was just right and the swordfish was well-prepared and imaginatively presented. Nice wine list. The crowd was a little noisy and casual for a fine dining experience, but that is coming from an old guy who still thinks dinner in a white-tablecloth restaurant is a special event.
The Chalkboard never disappoints. Their menu is varied by season enough that we can return again and again without getting bored. There are also some classics that always please, like the Beef Wellington. As usual, everything was perfectly cooked, service was excellent and you just can't beat the ambiance. The staff is attentive but not annoying. We also enjoyed our perfectly mixed drinks. There's not a better place to eat in Tulsa.
Literally the best steak I've had in my life. No exaggeration. I love meat, but I didn't realize it could be THAT good. I highly recommend the Beef Wellington (they say it's their signature dish). The steak was almost as tender as the mashed potatoes it was sitting on top of.
The cheese platter was also pretty darn incredible. As was the wine.
I can tell they are big on serving food with "opposite" flavors on the plate. Sweet to complement savory, etc. As a result, I really experienced a lot of creative flavors I've never experienced before.
It was also literally the most expensive meal I've paid for in my life. Though I will remember the way that steak tasted for years to come.
Unfortunately, cant give a good review...Service was slow and took forever to get drinks and food (with the exception of the appetizer). After we ordered (4 people ordered steaks), we were informed they only had two steaks left...Wow, this was a Monday night and we were literally the only table in the restaurant... food came out lukewarm.
I am sure they can do better and am sure it wasn't their best effort... Disappointing
Relatively small and quiet. The service was excellent and the food, although not cheap, was excellent. Delicious bread with an herb butter before the meal. Lamb lollipops (small lamb chops) for an appetizer and they were awesome. My wife had Beef Wellington which was fabulous. I had the filet, also delicious. Their beef is all Prime Plus so top quality. Had a dessert of lemon creme, vanilla creme, with a few berries and some meringue crumbles. We nearly licked the plate it was so good.
We went for my wifes birthday with her brother's family. We were very disappointed in the meal. My wife had the Beef Wellington, crust was soggy and undone, meat was prepared as she had requested but the sause tasted like ketchup with a little meat juce in it. I had the short rib(1) it was not tender, hard to chew, it came with gnochi(sp) which was raw dough and very gubby. This meal was only $123.00. We told the waitress but no adjustment was offered or given. Can't recommend. It was a Tuesday evening so maybe the kitchen was not their top tier but still not a good experiece.
I took my wife for our 45th Anniversary. The smell of fish was overwhelming when we entered.
I could not eat my entree the way it was prepared. My wife's filet was tough, for a $50 steak. Very disappointing. Had not been in a few years. Last experience before this was 5 star. This visit was very disappointing. The Ridge has taken the Chalkboard's spot as my choice for a fine dinner experience.
The ambiance is ok, a little cavernous and dated. The service was nice and friendly. The food was unfortunately less than average but was fairly pricey. I really love the attached Ambassador hotel and wish I enjoyed the Chalkboard but unfortunately it missed the mark for me.
The food was excellent. We ordered the flatbread entree, and it was excellent. I had the special which was Duck + Rabbit - I've never had Rabbit before, it was very, very good, perhaps one of my favorite meats I've had at a restaurant. My wife had the fish of the day, which also was very good. The only disappointment was dessert, we had the bread pudding which was ok. Our server was very friendly, but did forget to bring us bread when we asked, and also she never brought back our leftovers when she took them to box them up (we didn't realize this until we returned to our hotel).
I saw some reviews that the amount of food was small for the price; that's what you expect when you go to someplace like this, it's about quality over quantity. The price is too high for anything other than a special occasion for me, but I like to go to places like this on those special occasions. I would recommend this wholeheartedly.
The restaurant was nice, and the staff attentive. The food, however, was a big letdown for the price ($118 before tip). The appetizer was 'tea-cured salmon' for $15. The reality was basically a deconstructed tuna salad (but with salmon). There was a pile of raw purple onions, a chopped hard boiled egg, chopped dill pickles, a large smear of spicy mustard with capers, salmon, and crostini. They could have at the very least come up with a good sauce instead of straight mustard from a jar. The beef Wellington, $39, was very underseasoned (not a single grain of salt or pepper on the steak). It also hadn't been seared - just pale gray flesh. Also, the pastry was doughy on the inside. The garlic potatoes were gray and dried out. On the other hand, the scallops with cream of romaine purée, $38, was delicious. The creme brûlée, $7, was good. The 'berries and cream' dessert, $8, was ridiculous. For $8, you got exactly 2-eighth of an inch slivers of strawberry, 1 blackberry cut in half, 2 blueberries cut in half, and approximately 2 tbsps of cream/meringue. It was laughable at best. The creme brûlée had almost the same amount of fruit and whipped cream on top of it as the 'berries and cream' had altogether. And the brûlée was $1 cheaper. We will not be going to The Chalkboard again.
Premium ingredients that would justify the prices...but the kitchen simply lacked technique. The textures were mushy, the flavors were overwhelming and muddled rather than clean and balanced, everything was overly doused in sauces or butter (vegetbales). We had: crab cakes, mixed green salad, beef wellington, pekin duck, creme brulee.
For lunch I had the endive salad($12) to which I added a filet of salmon ($11). The salad came with a couple teaspoons of pate, a tablespoon of diced beets and about 6 endive leaves. It was a joke. The salmon was delicious and a normal portion size. Everything tasted great. But the portion size of the salad was ridiculous. I am a smaller size person, not a big eater. The server did nothing to inform me about the salad when I ordered and did nothing to help when I politely pointed it out after it came.
There was a party in the main part of the restaurant. Although I knew that, I wasn't expecting that kind of noise level. The food was ok, certainly overpriced for the quality of what we got. It ended up being around $170 for an appetizer, 2 entrees, 3 glasses of wine and a desert. The crab cakes were pretty good, small but tasty. The Haddock was good, but the jelly and cucumber that came with it was bitter and unappealing , the small polenta patty tasted good. The roasted cauliflower was delicicous and plentiful; the chicken that came with it was dry, and nothing special. The cheese cake I thought was good, but it was really 2 small squares the size of a brownie but my wife thought it was the worst she's had. The coffee was good, but you can get better at Siegis.
I come from Louisiana so most of the restaurants here in town don't come close to a semi good restaurant there. I was expecting more. It certainly has the high price point, but for that kind of money it should be the best restaurant in town and imho it certainly is not. I left wishing I had eaten somewhere else, which is a shame as it was my wedding anniversary. Something like Red Rock grill or Docs would've been around $100 and better.
I made a reservation on a Monday for Friday but got a call Wednesday saying my reservation was cancelled because someone booked the whole place. Instead they could out us in the wine cellar, I asked if it would be comfortable and was assured it would be. It ended up being cramped and noisy where my wife was bumped in to several times.
Dining in the wine cellar was cozy and quiet. Beef Wellington was great and cooked perfectly. Other diners had steak and lamb with good reviews. Excellent wine selection and our server was attentive, but not too much so.
Parking can be a problem, we got the last spot.
We have visited the Chalkboard on everyone of our visits to Tulsa over the last 4 years. The service and the food use to be excellent. It has now gone down hill. Poor service. I had to ask the waitress to take cocktail orders from everyone at the table. Food was cold. Mediocre and overpriced. No flavor. My daughter lives in Tulsa. Love the Ambassador as a hotel but will find alternative places to eat.
Our family went to the Chalkboard to celebrate our daughter's graduation from college. We specifically went there because they have Beef Wellington and it is one of my daughters favorites. The food was excellent as was the service. Two of us got the Wellington, one got lamb and one got the duck. All of the food was as good as expected. We also got frog legs for appetizers and they were great. We don't drink so can't speak to wine list. Will return when in Tulsa.
Update: several days later I received a call from the owner of the restaurant asking if I was related to Mr. D_____. I said yes he was my husband. The owner tracked us down from my reservation on Open Table to inform us that my husband had left his wallet in the restaurant and he was trying to get it back to him. My husband thought he had left it somewhere else and was in the process of locating it. The wallet had $1000.00 dollars and credit cards in it. This guy went above and beyond to return this wallet. Not only is the food top of the line here, the owner is an honest stand up guy that the world needs more of! Three cheers!!!!!!!!!
