The Celestial Steakhouse Ratings and Reviews
Total garbage, DO NOT EAT.
This is a restaurant on the edge of failure. We went at 8 PM on a Friday night, and the entire experience was mindblowing. From our inexperienced server, who made a mess with the wine/etc, to how as her only table, she couldn't keep with basic tasks. After being informed that three of the menu items were unavailable, we ordered steaks. (Including the chicken. WTF does a restaurant do to run out of chicken on a dead Saturday night? You can't run to one of the many high end stores and grab a few a start of shift?) The steaks were not good quality, presented to us a different times, and mine was stone cold served on a cold plate. The sides were oily and poorly made. We skipped dessert after hearing the 3 options, all of which came from the freezer. If I was eating at an Applebee's, I would accept this, and pay my $20 and leave. The wine and food prices are shameful, and this place should shut down and reboot. Don't waste your time here, go to a real steakhouse if you want a good meal. If you want the view, stop in for drinks and eat elsewhere.
The experience at The Celestial Steakhouse was one of a kind and will go back soon when given the opportunity. The steaks my date and I ordered were cooked to perfection, although mine was just a little more done, but did nothing to distract from the taste of the steak. The view was spectacular for the special moment of the evening. The Celestial Steakhouse was accommodating to the requests I made to make the evening special. If I know someone that wants to go out on the town or have a special evening with their significant other, I will not hesitate to recommend The Celestial Steakhouse to a person that asks!
I feel bad writing this review because it was the New Years Eve dinner service, but we expected more for the price. Our reservation was for 10pm and we arrived at 9:45pm, only to wait for 45 minutes to be seated. Knowing it was a holiday and very busy this didn't bother us nearly as much as the 30 minutes it took to even be greeted by the host. We stood in line in the cold entry hallway watching flustered employees rush past the line of people waiting to be seated. Patience comes easier once a guest has at least been acknowledged. Once seated service was very friendly and food came out quickly, but was underwhelming. I understand the hectic rush in a restaurant having worked in the industry for years, but the ambiance was lost in the frantic bustle of every employee speeding past. I felt hurried in response when addressed, and beverages were spilled at our table multiple times by waitstaff in their rush. My assumption was overbooked and/or understaffed leading to an average dinner experience I could have spent a fraction of the price on elsewhere. Beautiful view, but freezing cold table next to windows. I would return on a non-holiday hoping for a better experience.
This was the worst experience I have ever had at a fine dining restaurant. We had a reservation at 9:45 and we had to wait for a table for 45 mins. When we were finally seated we were directed to a tiny odd hall wall that you had to walk single file to even get in. The steak was good but everything else was plain and bland... like I would have rather eaten the garlic mashed potatoes at longhorn. Price was out of control for bland food. Service was awkward and just awful. I will never return. Never.
Service was so bad, I didn’t even order dinner. I was made to stand and wait in the lobby for 90 minutes, and was finally seated after 11pm for my 9:45 reservation; there was nobody working the host stand and no employees spoke to me or any of the other 15 guests also waiting there. The phone was ringing off the hook. The owner/manager finally appeared at the host stand, but sat people according to their place in the waiting line rather than by the time of their reservation. At one point he announced he had my table waiting before he knew which reservation was mine, and then made me wait again while he readied the wrong table. When I finally sat down he announced he had changed restaurant policy 48 hours before my reservation: now everyone must order off the $75/person fixed menu. I said I would’ve gladly eaten at steak at 9:45, the time of my reservation. But it was 11:30 before the waitress brought our first drinks and readied herself to take our food order - and I can’t eat a 3-course meal and steak at 11:30pm. The owner/manager lectured me and my entire table, faulting us and his other guests for expecting our reservations to be kept, snapping that he was VERY BUSY!, telling us we had no business choosing our own food after his last-minute choice to fix the menu, and that we should be thankful we got to sit down at all rather than being upset at our wait of 90 min past our reservation. We paid for our single drinks and left without ordering. Long story short, I will absolutely not return to The Celestial until it’s under new management - hands-down worst customer service experience I’ve had at any Cincinnati restaurant, gas station, or fast-food drive thru.
Service was terrible, band from lounge made the entire room buzz, had to return my steak due to it be butterflied and over done- my husbands went cold in the process. Half way through our meal before we received our wine. And creme brulee was served with a fork, but the server said she "might be able to find a spoon." Gratuity was automatically added, so there was no way to even make a statement about how poor our evening was... not what I would expect for a dinner for 2, at a total of $250.
Would not recommend
Food was better than average, atmosphere was terrific, with a great view, but the service is as advertised in other reviews. That is to say not very attentive at all. I would attribute this to the fact that we were forced to give a 20% gratuity on a party of only 5, but in reading past reviews, the level if service is constantly mediocre.
Our New Year's Eve dinner was superb and the service was excellent. This is such a beautiful dining venue with a beautiful view and a long standing tradition. This restaurant does need a facelift and it would serve the owners well to do it sooner than later.
First of all, I wanted to say that we were so excited to try this place on nye only to leave speechless and disappointed .
The only good thing about this place was the view. The carpet had stains and the wood looked as if it hadn’t seen pledge in 30 years.
The service ... we were seated at a great little table. The server appeared quickly and pointed out the wine list and menu which was pretty straightforward. After taking our order, the server must have been practicing for his next job as an illusionist because that’s all he was, an illusion. The guy didn’t care about us in the slightest. After our food was dropped off, not once did he stop by our table to check on us. After over an hour, I had to go find the owner and tell him that we needed our check and that no one had stopped by. He wasn’t even apologetic. Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse, they did...
The food ... she had a filet and I had a strip. Her filet was grossly undercooked which would’ve been fine had the server stopped back to correct it. My strip was delivered and I was confused, I though I had mistakenly been given a pile of charcoal. The only thing that we enjoyed was the cheesecake and the red potatoes. We asked for our food to be boxed and we were given a plastic snap container that you’d find at the salad bar at Kroger. At a place like that, one could assume that they would box our food for us given the atmosphere and the price we were paying
Gratuity was added to our check which was only a party of two. The guy didn’t care about us because he knew he was getting paid regardless. So, if you want mediocre food and service that is worse than the local Waffle House, then this is the place for you.
* I was refunded my gratuity after talking to the owner a few days later. I worked as a server and I know what to expect. I wasn’t given even basic service.
Dined for New Years Eve. We were told of the fixed menu 2 days prior to dining. The food tasted as if was pre-prepared. Refused to let us order a steak without the sauce. The asparagus was hard and undercooked and the potatoes were mushy and looked like they were sitting around too long. The waiter would not split the check for what was ordered by the 2 couples but only down the middle. The restaurant needs an update. Clearly not worth the$75 fee for this meal. Only thing good was the view.
The room was freezing so the food wasn't hot. Men, you'll need your jackets and women, bring a warm wool shawl. Ordered medium beef filet; it was absolutely raw in the middle. Servers were overtaxed because it was New Year's Eve. There was a long line waiting for tables to turn and they were not happy. And finally, the carpet. Much has been said about the worn, filthy, nasty carpet and it's all true. On the other hand, if you want a true fine dining experience, you're probably not going to find it anywhere on New Year's Eve. The Celestial is in a prime spot and could be great with some renovation and weatherstripping.
Food was amazing!!! The only thing that was on the not great side was the service. My guess is because of the snow a lot of reservations cancelled, so they only had one server there for the restaurant. So I think she was just having a little trouble keeping up. Like I said though Food was amazing which is what you want from a nice restaurant.
Very much enjoyed our dinner! Had been a while since we had been here and remembered why we liked it! Cara, our server, was extremely personable and helpful, the food was delicious, and the view, as always, was incredible. We popped into the bar for an after dinner drink and enjoyed talking with the bartender - who let us know there is a group of CCM/SCPA students who play jazz music there on Wednesday nights from 4:30-7:30 (?). )Planning our next trip to take advantage of the jazz music and a nice happy hour.....
Food quality was very good. The Lounge Floors are disgusting. Carpet has to be 30 years old, and horrible looking! If you are going to have Brass rails, glass racking, etc, CLEAN IT / Polish it ALL - top to bottom, and make it shine. The railings look like they've been at Sea for a decade.
Our server was 'ok'. Not the best for a Christmas Eve. Salmon wrapped in spinach and Puff Pastry was excellent, and the Kitchen definitely did their job! Cocktails were very good. But when we visited the lounge after dinner, the Piano Player was mediocre at best, and the place just looks super dated!! There was even a 2'X 4' rug over a place in the permanently fixed carpet that had to be covering up a large rip / hole. Honestly.. the place just looks dated. It will be a while before we 'rush' back. Owners clearly aren't interested in moving 'forward' with their dining room / lounge decor. Oh, and if you're going to have a Piano player , which would have been a VERY nice touch - hire someone who's an accomplished player. Sorry to be so hard in this review, but I'm just calling 'balls and strikes' here...
First time visit, was seated near the window and was very cold, dined with my coat on the entire meal and still shivered, making it unpleasant. The small tables for 2 near the window were in a long narrow hall, dim light, candles on the table may have helped, but they definitely need some more indirect lighting of some sort. We dined Christmas Eve and knew the special menu was pricey. The food was excellent, no complaints there, very tasty, nice presentation. Service was slow and because she knew our choices for all three courses ahead of time, she could have timed the service a bit better. There shouldn’t have been a delay between the courses; then having to wait on the check and ask for drink refills was even more disappointing. They automatically added 20% gratuity, so adjusting the tip according to the service received was not possible, just have to grin and bear it and consider it next time, if there is a next time. Oh well, it was a new experience, may or may not return, let some time pass and see what happens.
The food was very good and the view is unparalleled and everything I expected from the Celestial.
The service was very slow however and the waiter needed some additional training in table service - reaching over guest's plates to retreive unused silverware and carrying stacks of plates and dishes over a guest's shoulder and head was risky. No damage done but the additional round trips to the kitchen seemed a better option.
Lastly the carpet is in serious need of replacement
Overall the main reason for going is still there - great food and an awesome view, but there is room for improvement.
Food was very good. My filet mignon was cooked properly. The waiter and waitress serving our table were both very polite, wonderful workers. This was my first time dining at Celestial, and I certainly hope to return. My family was celebrating my birthday and my desert was even removed from our bill. Great service and generosity go a long way. Thanks.
The evening started out good with our table being at the windows, however the windows were too cold and there was a draft. We moved to another table and that was much better. Service was good. We ordered appetizers and a side salad along with our entree. Here is where the service went downhill. As we were eating our salad the entree (steak) arrived much too early. We had to juggle our plates in order to accomaodate the entree plates. Didn't have enough time to enjoy the spinach salad because the steak was getting cold along with the baked potato which the skin of the potato was very tough, like it was dried out. We felt like we were rushed through our meal. The server just apologized for the quickness of the steak coming out too fast. We let it be known that we were disappointed that everything was too quick. The restaurant was not busy at the time we were there (6:pm). Never once did the manager come and said anything about how was the meal or sorry that the entree came too fast. We were very disappointed especially since were were celebrating an event for my wife (she is retiring). Will think very hard about going back there or recommending this place. I know this place can do much better.
I have dined at this Restuarant many times over the years. Overall this dinning experience was good with they exception of the service. I mentioned to our server upon arrival at 5:00 that we had theatre tickets and needed to depart at 6:30. She took our dinner order 20 minutes later (the Restuarant was not crowded at this time). We Ordered 12 oysters for the table. One of the dinners found a small live crab in her oyster. We informed our server who did not seem concerned or apologetic. Our entrees arrived without the sides ordered for the table. Informed our server when she arrived to check on our entrees that we did not receive our sides. She admitted it was her fault, was not very apologetic and said she could order them. I asked how long it would take and she replied ten minutes. I reminded her that we were on a tight schedule and said we would for go the sides. She returned to clear that table at 6:30. She asked if we would like to order dessert? I had explained to her that we needed to leave for the theatre and requested the check. When she returned with the check our oyster appitizer remained on the bill. Obviously she never informed the manager of our complaint regarding the little guest (the live crab).
We were seated in the bar area and then a large holiday party showed up. We were the only ones that was dining in the area. We had people standing in front of view of the city and people all around the table. It was extremely loud! We asked why he sat us there and was told because one was in a wheelchair he couldn’t put us on the dining room. This should have been communicated to us as soon as we arrived. Our server was very sympathetic but the gentleman that seated us was not.
VERY POOR response.
The view was spectacular and the food was delicious. Service was slightly off in that a steak was ordered but no steak knife provided. We asked for the soup leftovers to be packed up for us but it wasn't given to us until we asked. Overall a nice restaurant and I'm pretty sure we will return.
