This is the third property for restaurateurs Anna Weinberg, James Nicholas and Executive Chef Jennifer Puccio - the same team behind Marlowe and Park Tavern. Award winning San Francisco designer, Ken Fulk, revamped the interior with deep leather banquettes, polished brass, zinc and white marble, lending a posh and sultry feel.
Had a wonderful brunch - service was attentive but not overbearing. The restaurant wasn’t full so it wasn’t too loud to hear each other. The food was delicious. We had the scone to start, then the English breakfast which was filling enough to last all afternoon. Would definitely return.
Fantastic experience. Everything from the food to the overall service was perfect. Food was delicious and well made and the service was excellent. Everyone who came to the table was kind and professional.
I would highly recommend and will also be coming back.
Good food. Great staff.
My recent trip was my second visit. While the food was very good both times, at peak dinner hours the noise level so high it is difficult to hear someone across the small table from you. It seemed even higher than my first visit. I'll go someplace else next time.
Met a team for a breakfast business meeting. Superb food, great central location right off of easy mass transit, bright and happy service---however---really, really cold. Like as in: we all kept on our winter jackets and the ladies pulled on their scarves on top of that. Not sure what was up--it was ambient 48 degrees outside, and the restaurant is filled with beautiful light from big glass windows, so maybe, with its high ceilings, that's just a thing. But...it was cold. Still, with a warning to my business associates to bring warm sweaters and jackets, would be happy to do breakfast there again.
I’ve had several meals here and it’s always consistently good!!
Everything about The Cavalier is great. Jessica (manager), Joelle (manager) and Danielle (server) all went above and beyond.
I dine at all of the Big Night Group restaurants. I book all of my clients into the restaurants, do large events with the events team and am never disappointed.
By far, the best dining company in town. Anna and her team are killing it.
Old friends reunion. Wonderful service and place.
Overall a nice place. Food was good and the ambiance was better. A bit noisy, but probably due to the time of day. I'd return if I am in that area of SF again.
Food was basically correctly prepared but completely tasteless, we barely touched our lunch, the service was virtually non-existent, despite the fact that the restaurant was practically empty and heavily staffed. The check was almost $90 for a bordering on inedible lunch for two.
If this place once had a kitchen with good food, they do not any longer.
My daughter and I came here years ago and decided to try it again because she likes fish and chips. The ambience was more upscale than pub, but it looked like there were several different rooms and we got the quiet one. I would have liked to have given the service a "5" because everyone was SO attentive, but there were mistakes on our order, which I can't help but think would have been averted had the waiter just written everything down. I'd rather an order come out right than having it look good that the waiter could memorize our complicated order.
We ordered the "Marlowe" burger because it has been mentioned so much. I had high expectations....and then such disappointment. We ordered medium. Burger patties were so thin, not at all juicy, cheese, lettuce, and crumbled thick burnt bacon. We skipped the aioli and onions. The genius in the burger was crumbling the bacon so that they stuck to the cheese and didn't fall out. Plus I like burnt bacon, so ok for me. The mix up was that I wanted lettuce on burger, and side 1/2 greens and 1/2 fries. Daughter wanted no lettuce and all fries. I got no lettuce on burger but correct 1/2 and 1/2. Daughter got the burger with lettuce and side salad only. They took both plates away and came back with our correct plates. The daughter got the hot fries but now mine were cold.....really, they couldn't give me hot fries since they were cooking some anyway? See what I mean about just writing down our orders? Then after my daughter ate half her sandwich, I lifted the top bun off and guess what? No bacon. So they brought us a plate of bacon.
So at the end of the meal, we get the check, and it had all the items on it. I expressed my disappointment that after two errors, they couldn't comp me one glass of wine? Waiter went to manager and they ended up not charging us for the 2 burgers. I really appreciate it when a restaurant steps up and takes responsibility. Thank you, Cavalier! Will come back
Great meal and great service! We stopped in for a pre-theater meal. The server actually asked us if we were going to the theater. The drinks and food came promptly but I didn't feel rushed at all. I have been here before and the food is always excellent. I had the roast chicken. The preparation was changed up a bit but it was delicious!
Came for dinner before a show and had a lovely experience. Wonderful restaurant. Also, the check was on the table when we needed to head out.
Always a great time at The Cavalier. I love their Vesper cocktail as it’s my favorite in the city. The Marlowe Burger is one of my favorites too. Mixologists, Suresh and Christopher, took exceptional care of our group of 4.
Delicious twist on British food! I had the fish and chips. The fish was lighter than air--such a change form the usual version. And the pea tendril salad that came with it was the perfect accompaniment. The chocolate bread pudding, gnocchi, and lemon chicken were also hits. The smoked crab and shrimp louie were not good however--the smoked flavor overpowered everything. Excellent service!
The space is really cute and the service was absolutely impeccable! Really great, attentive waitstaff. The food, however, was a bit disappointing. We tried the prosciutto and dates, scotched duck egg, beet salad, rarebit and brussels sprouts chips. The brussels sprouts were quite good, but everything else was just a little off or devoid of flavor. My dining companions seemed to enjoy the food, but I wouldn't necessarily go back.
Great decor, excellent service. Food was good, but the pricing relative to the portion was poor. Paying $100 for two for lunch is an expensive lunch out, I'd expect to be full at the end. Dainty portion sizes.
Fantastic! Great for a client dinner. Bar area was great. Knowledgeable wait staff.
I love the clubby atmosphere and the matching attentive service--it reminded me of London. The food was terrific and the cocktails were as well. The music was a tad loud, but given that it has a rock-n-roll theme, it was understandable.
Pleasant surprise! Convenient Union Square walkable location.
Second time i've gone to Cavalier for a business breakfast. I think it's the best in the city. Great food, amazing service and it's quiet and private.
Fantastic service, interesting & creative-sounding menu but I didn't love the lunch option I ordered and the lamb appetizer was odd and not very "appetizing." It's VERY expensive even for SF and a bit overrated given the cost. But again, great service and the food was good (not great).
Service was great & the ambiance is nice but one star off for the noise level. Food was great - especially the bone marrow & the tuna appetizer. The fish & chips were perfectly cooked but the fish was bland. The pea salad was great & the bar made the best Vespa I’ve ever had. It’s also great that this is walking distance to Golden Gate theater.
noisy and very expensive (6% 'SF Mandate' added on the bill). Wine by the glass was very expensive for vin ordinaire. Server was excellent. Food good, but not exceptional (Scallops for me, Lamb for my wife)
Everyone loved their food and we enjoyed the atmosphere. Not cheap, and the wine is pricey too, but overall a great night out. Service and pacing was great!
Received very poor service. The waitress initially refused to make my request of making the eggs scrambled, stating it’s all made as stated on the menu. I went in December much was a better experience. Food this time was poor.
We have a wonderful dinner. The wait staff was attentive but not intrusive. The drinks were excellent. I loved the decor and grey color of the interior.
Vegetarian food was good and Brussel sprouts were the best of all places. Non-Vegetarian food is average. Good service and good wine selection.
Was rather disappointed with this place, firstly the neighbourhood was “omg” scary. The restaurant had a wired smell, server was friendly yet not 2min’s after seating she was looking to take drink orders. All & all didn’t enjoy myself
It was an absolutely fantastic meal; my only complaint is the amount of Gnocchi that was given for the price. Being a cook, I am aware of the simplicity yet complexity of making a dish like that. It was just unfortunate that it was not filling because of the small portion for a hefty price. The rib eye was amazing, I ate some of my boyfriend’s dish. Also, being a pastry cook, the frangipane was not necessarily just that. It was a tart, delicious, yet not a frangipane. Anywho, our waiter was Damien was great. Thank you for a delicious meal with attentive service.
Food was mediocre
As always the food is wonderful. Sadly the service when present was great but we were often left to fend for ourselves for 15 to 20 minute blocks over the course of the evening. Never ideal when there is a bottle of champagne being enjoyed. Also it seemed there was a shift in server somewhere during our dinner but we only knew that because we asked.
The food was awesome. Service was poor, many mistakes with ordering, receiving incorrect food. I would still go back again.
With a feel for a classic London Eatery, leather bench seats etc. the service is first class and the food top notch! We were here for Christmas Dinner and we treated very well
Christmas dinner. Excellent.
Came for Christmas prix fix lunch -- fab. The service was excellent, the food perfection, and thoughtful selection of wine. So much food! I had the shrimp and polenta, the salmon, and then the apple tart. Plus sides and appetizer, and a couple glasses of white wine. Lots of grown ups having Christmas, festive atmosphere. Many thanks to everyone who worked xmas day.
Food was very good, only let down by what could best be described insincere service. Although it was a Christmas dinner the starter arrived before the bread dips and welcome fizz and as it was a wine paired menu the second wine then arrived after just a sip of the first. Only for the starter to be cleared and the main course arrived seconds later together with another wine. To say the service was rushed would be an understatement, and when we asked for a break prior to desert, it was met with disapproving glances from our waitor.
