   Upon arrival the host could not find my reservation even though I had received confirmation and showed them it. Luckily there were some spare tables so our evening was not ruined. We opted for the special weekend menu that offered 2/3 courses with a bottle of wine. This was excellent and we were well looked after by Jacques.

   When we arrived they didn’t have a record of our booking which should have given us an idea of what was to come, but they managed to find us a table. There was no draught cider and several other beers were not available. The waiter did not appear to know how to use the technology to take our orders and did not fill us with confidence. He said that no sauces were available for the steak but another waiter managed to get some. We had to wait a long time for our drinks and had to remind the waiter who reordered them. My Sunday dinner lamb rump was lukewarm, not very tasty, with fatty lamb. Another waiter asked us how our meal was and we said we were disappointed but this got no response. We then ordered desert but after waiting about 20 minutes we decided to cancel - again we received no apology from the waiter. We ate here last year and the food and service were very good. We come to Castleton every year for the carols in the cave but will not be returning to The Castle.

   Friendly service on a very busy night. Food on the weekend treats menu was tasty and also good value.

   They knew nothing about the booking thru OpenTable so, to begin with, they didn’t have a table for us. We waited for a while and then they eventually found us a table. Thereafter, the food & service was excellent. It’s just a shame about the reservation-fail. Why are they signed up to use OpenTable if they don’t honour the bookings made thru it?

   Good food, well served in a nice atmosphere ahead of Jarvis Cocker gig in Peak Cavern. Very much enjoyed it.

   When we arrive they didn’t have our booking even though we had an email confirmation. When we ordered food it came quickly but the standards were poor. We have our feedback to the manager who took our food off our bill leaving us to just pay for the drinks

   WE come to Castleton every year and always eat two nights at the Castle. This year we only ate one night, Saturday 2nd September. We brought friends this year and after a decent experience last year, were very disappointed this time. When I booked we specifically said one of our party was gluten free, when we arrived there were no starters she could have and very limited main courses .. a plain steak. This was disgraceful in an age of allergy awareness and far below the standards set by the likes of the Nags Head down the road, where we ate the rest of the nights. Three of our party of four asked for the lobster and prawn cocktail, only to be told when being served there was no lobster, so we got a plate of prawns and some lettuce - bland at that. Were we offered any discount due to it not being as ordered - NO. The steaks we had were ok. The atmosphere was poor this year. All in all a really poor experience, especially as we had high expectations after good meals in 2016
