A Pittsburgh favorite for over 20 years. Recipient of the Wine Spectator of Excellence 1995-2006 and The Dirona Award 2000 - 2006 (Distinguished Restaurants of North American).
The Carlton has a spectacular cuisine, complimented with an extensive wine list served by polished waiters in a beautiful atmosphere. Pittsburghers know the value of the Carlton making it the spot for business meetings to celebrations.
The food is always fresh and delicious! The service is always great too!
Excellent service and good food.
Always a great time and wonderful food. Our server was very helpful with some in our party. Long time customer.
We have always had a great experience at The Carlton. Their food is outstanding, the service is attentive and the overall experience is the best. I can always count on them for meeting my expectations every time we visit. And they really do!
Our meals were outstanding and we could not have asked for better service.
The food was delicious. Our server was very nice and while attentive, she was also good at giving us space and allowing us to catch up. Having the shuttle to the theater made the night even more convenient and enjoyable. It was a little pricier than I would normally do, but would definitely consider coming back!
Food & service at lunchtime was excellent as usual.
Love the Carlton! Great food & Doug always takes good care of us, and makes great recommendations on food & wine pairings
Our favorite restaurant in downtown Pittsburgh. Always excellent.
The chef knew how to make the food delicious and appealing from Start to finish. Every bite was savory
The waiter was knowledgeable and friendly. His recommendations were taken and we were very pleased. Thank you Michael
for over 30 years The Carlton has been the best restaurant in Pittsburgh and never disappoints. The service is impeccable and the food top notch.
Excellent food, wine, and service. This is one of the few restaurants in Pittsburgh that have multiple seafood options and that know how to cook them properly. It's also one of the few that has many choices of good wines by the glass at reasonable prices.
We both ordered filets. Excellent preparation and taste. Our waiter, PAUL, was outstanding. Bartenders made a special visit to our table to check on a crafted cocktail. Celebrating 35th Anniversary. Great experience.
Carlton was touted as one of Pittsburgh's most venerable restaurants, so a meal that was so-so at best was a big disappointment.
Our waiter, Doug, was busy but wonderfully attentive, polite, and competent.
We were seated at a quiet table as requested.
The menu selections and wine offerings were wide-ranging and thoughtfully chosen. We had a delicious dinner and a sublime creme brûlée as dessert.
The Carlton responded graciously to an unforeseen change in our plans and made every effort to accommodate us.
Thank you so much for a class act, Mr. Joyce and staff. Don’t ever go away!

The Carlton is an untapped gem in Pittsburgh! This place should be packed every day! The food is always fantastic and thee service is always above! They were slammed for the symphony diners on Saturday but the kitchen staff and servers ( Chris) pulled it out. I ask my wife every time we eat here why don't we eat here more often? They are professionals!!
As always, superlative! Never had bad meal or even a bad dish in over two decades!
A lovely meal that the server paced well. The wine list is outstanding: interesting selections and some excellent values.
We love the Carlton! The scallops are my favorite but the specials never disappoint! The only thing that kept this from 5 stars was the cosmopolitans we all ordered. We did ask for grey goose which I’m sure it was but we did not specify the triple sec which may have been the problem, they were not smooth at all, the server did bring us additional cranberry juice and it helped but we normally would have had a few drinks, but it took us a while to get the cosmos down :/. I’ll stick to wine next time!
The Carlton was great as always. We dine hear several times a year. It’s a good place to go before a show at Heinz Hall or the Benedum.
Theater with my granddaughter
Everything was phenomenal - the food, menu, service, and ambiance. The server was friendly and made us feel welcome. The food was presented well, was tasty, and was a good portion. It was my wife's birthday, and they brought out a dessert with a candle to celebrate. The only issue we encountered was not knowing to enter through the wine bar as the street entrance was closed.
We love attending the Carlton, particularly before the theater because they offer the free limo service back and forth to whatever show we are attending. Our meals on Tuesday were outstanding, - my husband had the sea bass and the Carlton salad and he said they were delicious. I had one of their specials the blue Marlin which was cooked with a Mediterranean preparation. It was the first time I had tasted blue marlin and it was outstanding. I would order it every time I attended the restaurant if it was available. The artichokes, tomatoes, olives and pilaf were the perfect addition. I also had their grilled romaine salad which is something I order whenever it is available (no matter what restaurant I go to). I have to say this was the best grilled romaine salad I have had- the crisp prosciutto and the dressing took this salad to the top of my list. As always the Carlton did not disappoint.
Good food and company.
Soup too salty.
Rest of meal ok.
Another excellent meal and a great evening at The Carlton! The food was perfectly prepared, all with fresh ingredients and combinations that were exquisite. The service is outstanding, even with the restaurant being full, we never had to ask for anything. Our waiter, Doug, was probably the best we've had anywhere - great suggestions, super friendly, and even surprised us with an anniversary dessert. The Carlton remains our favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh!
My favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh. Great service - Faye is amazing- great food, and an amazing wine list.
The Carlton hits the gold standard for a white-tablecloth restaurant. The food is consistently delicious, with friendly, attentive service and a quiet, sophisticated vibe.
The food was amazing! Some of the staff was a bit snooty but our waitress was good and very nice.
We loved everything. I ate the first steak I've had in a restaurant in years and it was perfect. So was the sauce with it. My husband had scallops which were the best he's ever had. The service was terrific. We liked having the time to enjoy our food and conversation without being rushed to the next course.
The food was great and our waiter was fantastic. It's always been a great place in the City to go and I appreciate the ability to get in and out within a lunch hour time frame.
In Pittsburgh on business, I went here one mid-week night. It’s creepy - empty, outdated, sad. Even the entry is awkward, worn, and a little scary. The food? Merely so-so, in no way up to the prices.
Excellent, as always. This is our favorite Pittsburgh restaurant.
This is our 2nd time to the Carlton and we are still in love with this place. Food is excellent! The sea bass was to die for! If you have a show to go to or something at PPG, the Carlton will provide free parking and a shuttle to the theatre district both ways or one way there to PPG. What a great perk! Atmosphere, service and food are awesome! They also have a coupon in the Entertainment book. You can't do any better!
This restaurant is very hard to find. We walked from the Marriott and the entrance off Grant St is not marked at all. It is inside the BNY Mellon building and there is no exterior sign. The exterior entrance is off of Ross St. That said, once you get there it is fantastic! There were 6 of us eating before a concert. We all agreed our dinners were one of the best we’ve ever had! We had the salmon, sea scallops, and beef tenderloin at our table. I will definitely go back! It’s been 3 days and I’m still thinking about that salmon! The wine list and service was also excellent. One of my new faves in the city.
We were stuck in terrible traffic while trying to make it to our reservation. When I called The Carlton to explain our dilemma, the person who answered was extremely kind, told us that she understood, and for us not to worry and get there when we could. That put us at ease and I am grateful for their understanding! (And the food was wonderful, too)!
The food was very good except for the flatbread which was burnt on the bottom. The soup crab bisque soup was terrific! The Carlton Hose salad as always was great. The service was excellent and all the rest of the food was great. We especially appreciated the desert (ice cream on a chocolate chip cookie).
Hadn't eaten here in about 2 years- the food has improved significantly. Braised ribs were amazing , along with the lobster pierogi. Great wine list as well, and convenient location.
Every time I visit, I have a terrific meal, great service and walk away wondering why I do not plan more business meals at The Carlton!
They always have good food and service when we go.
