We have been patronizing the Carlton for several decades. But I must say the most recent visit (2-15-18) was disappointing. For one thing, the service was painfully slow. Our reservations were for 7 p.m. Our entrees finally arrived at 8:15 -- and the place was practically empty. So it wasn't because they were busy.

The first plate of bread that arrived was substandard -- a pitifully small amount for four people, certainly not enough to include a variety especially if we're going to be waiting more than an hour for our entrees to show up.

Secondly, the food just doesn't taste very good any more. There seems to be a need to put an Asian twist into too many dishes. The Chilean sea bass used to be wonderful, but the most recent treatment just isn't very good. Far better the Chilean Sea Bass of yore with Asian Slaw and Basmati Rice. (Yes, I realize it has an Asian twist.)

All in all, it was a disappointing experience and one that we wont be soon repeating, which is a shame after all these years. The Carlton is an attractive restaurant, although not the easiest to access. There are too many excellent new restaurants to make the effort to get to the Carlton worthwhile.

The chef took my off menu request and didn't hesitate. It was the best version of entree that I have ever had! Our waiter was outstanding and went above and beyond for us.

Russell was our waiter. He did a great job. I had lamb chops and they were cooked perfect. My wife had the Bronzino which is a Mediterranean fish. Very tasty. Went to Heinz Hall after dinner to see the PSO. The Carlton supplies the limo which allows you to not worry about parking. Very nice evening.

I often got to The Carlton as I work at BNY Mello. I had the Halibut w/mash potatoes & green beans. You honestly could not tell the fish from the potatoes. The Halibut was very very soft and mushy - horrible texture.

Wonderful as always. While we usually get the outstanding prime rib, we decided to go seafood this time. Lobster and crab gnocci appetizer was really nice. Main courses of branzino and stone bass were both really well prepared. An old fashioned pecan ball made for a nice finish. Service, as always, was excellent.

Every time my wife and I dine at the Carlton we finish the meal asking each other "Why do we go anywhere else?" The combination of food, service, ambiance and convenience make The Carlton a true gem in the Pittsburgh dining scene. The menu, with specials, always has several tempting choices. The Carlton house salad is wonderful and the wine selection has a wide range of selections and prices. Add the free parking and shuttle to the theatre or symphony and it is a no brainer.

We went to The Carlton for Restaurant Week. It was the first time we've been at this restaurant during the Restaurant Week specials so we were interested in seeing how it compared to a normal Saturday night. The place was busy - not sure if that was normal or due to Restaurant Week but I'd bet it was due to Restaurant Week. We had our choice of the normal Restaurant Week dinner menu or pairing it with wine. Since The Carlton is so known for it's wine we took the wine pairing option. The first course we both got the crisp breaded crab risotto balls and it was paired with a Sauvignon Blanc. The risotto balls were spectacular and the wine paired with it perfectly. I could have just had a plate of those and been happy. But the 2nd course arrived - I got the short rib pot pie paired with a cigar zinfandel and my table mate got the pork chop paired with a Malbec. We were both raving on the food and the wine. For the dessert course I got a chocolate cheesecake and my table mate ordered the banana creme pie. Both were huge portions so we ended up taking most of it home with us. No skimping due to Restaurant Week at all. We appreciated that the wait staff was very attentive without being bothersome. We even got a table visit by the owner, Mr. Joyce. And never did we feel rushed so the table could be turned over. All and all a delightful evening!

We very much enjoyed our dinner. Our waiter 'over rode' our appetizer choices and we ordered at his suggestion the lobster/crab Gnocchi - amazing!! We enjoyed our sea bass - but feel that the cold bed of veggies and noodles does a disservice to the dish. We even thought of having the sea bass OVER the gnocchi and the veggies/noodles as the appetizer!! The cold transferred itself to the sea bass and I like my hot foods HOT!! I also would like to see a key lime pie, or some type of citrus type dessert. It was a huge plus and the reason we decided on The Carlton to have our parking validated and a ride up to PPG arena!

My brother, friend, and I visited for Pittsburgh Restaurant Week. It was an exceptional value for a 3 course meal. My brother and friend chose to get the wine pairing and it was a total cluster. They gave them both the wrong wine with the first course, they brought my brother the correct one but my friend got the wrong one again and by the time she got the correct one she was finished with her first course. My brother got the correct wine with the second course but my friend got the wrong one AGAIN. How are you going to mess that up 3 times for the same person?! It also seemed to take a long time in general to get our meal and our server seemed totally overwhelmed even though we were there fairly early evening and there were very few other diners. My brother and friend enjoyed their meals but mine was just ok. They had hake and the pork chop, I had the short rib pot pie. They did give us an additional dessert for the inconveniences we experienced. I would come back for another discount thing like restaurant week but I would never pay the full price for that kind of service and food.

Reservation was made for Restaurant Week - lunch. No fault of the restaurant, the event website listed that they would have lunch, but they were only beginning RW for dinner early (Friday, instead of starting everything on Monday). Sadly, the restaurant let a table of 6 walk out without attempting to make accommodations. Also, the restaurant is rundown in appearance and has an old/stale/musty smell that would have made eating a challenge. Since we didn't get to eat, can't review the food. Just the "service."

My wife and I had dinner recently at The Carlton. This was our first visit there. It was a Saturday night, early (5:30PM). The hostess and the server both asked up front if this was a pre-theater dinner (it wasn't in our case), which I appreciated. It showed that pre-theater dining was a realistic option (i.e. dinner at The Carlton is not a mandatory drawn-out multi-hour affair) and that they were sensitive to that issue. Our food actually came very quickly and efficiently. We were finished with an appetizer, main course, and dessert before 7:00PM. We could have easily made an 8:00PM theater engagement if/as needed. The food itself was excellent. Everything was good. I also loved the fact that the menu was relatively basic and straightforward. There are a lot of basic, classic menu choices. Ours was executed really well. The restaurant environment is quiet, good for conversation over dinner. And, it actually is quite a good value. The menu prices are quite reasonable for a downtown high quality restaurant.

Our waitress Erica was wonderful . She brought us a free dessert for our anniversary and was very helpful with our menu questions. A very enjoyable experience - my filet was cooked perfectly. We will return, hopefully for one of their special event dinners as there was a whiskey event happening while we were there
