We very much enjoyed our dinner. Our waiter 'over rode' our appetizer choices and we ordered at his suggestion the lobster/crab Gnocchi - amazing!! We enjoyed our sea bass - but feel that the cold bed of veggies and noodles does a disservice to the dish. We even thought of having the sea bass OVER the gnocchi and the veggies/noodles as the appetizer!! The cold transferred itself to the sea bass and I like my hot foods HOT!! I also would like to see a key lime pie, or some type of citrus type dessert. It was a huge plus and the reason we decided on The Carlton to have our parking validated and a ride up to PPG arena!

My brother, friend, and I visited for Pittsburgh Restaurant Week. It was an exceptional value for a 3 course meal. My brother and friend chose to get the wine pairing and it was a total cluster. They gave them both the wrong wine with the first course, they brought my brother the correct one but my friend got the wrong one again and by the time she got the correct one she was finished with her first course. My brother got the correct wine with the second course but my friend got the wrong one AGAIN. How are you going to mess that up 3 times for the same person?! It also seemed to take a long time in general to get our meal and our server seemed totally overwhelmed even though we were there fairly early evening and there were very few other diners. My brother and friend enjoyed their meals but mine was just ok. They had hake and the pork chop, I had the short rib pot pie. They did give us an additional dessert for the inconveniences we experienced. I would come back for another discount thing like restaurant week but I would never pay the full price for that kind of service and food.

Reservation was made for Restaurant Week - lunch. No fault of the restaurant, the event website listed that they would have lunch, but they were only beginning RW for dinner early (Friday, instead of starting everything on Monday). Sadly, the restaurant let a table of 6 walk out without attempting to make accommodations. Also, the restaurant is rundown in appearance and has an old/stale/musty smell that would have made eating a challenge. Since we didn't get to eat, can't review the food. Just the "service."

My wife and I had dinner recently at The Carlton. This was our first visit there. It was a Saturday night, early (5:30PM). The hostess and the server both asked up front if this was a pre-theater dinner (it wasn't in our case), which I appreciated. It showed that pre-theater dining was a realistic option (i.e. dinner at The Carlton is not a mandatory drawn-out multi-hour affair) and that they were sensitive to that issue. Our food actually came very quickly and efficiently. We were finished with an appetizer, main course, and dessert before 7:00PM. We could have easily made an 8:00PM theater engagement if/as needed. The food itself was excellent. Everything was good. I also loved the fact that the menu was relatively basic and straightforward. There are a lot of basic, classic menu choices. Ours was executed really well. The restaurant environment is quiet, good for conversation over dinner. And, it actually is quite a good value. The menu prices are quite reasonable for a downtown high quality restaurant.

Our waitress Erica was wonderful . She brought us a free dessert for our anniversary and was very helpful with our menu questions. A very enjoyable experience - my filet was cooked perfectly. We will return, hopefully for one of their special event dinners as there was a whiskey event happening while we were there

We had 11 people for a family New Year's Eve dinner. The service was friendly and not at all rushed. We had two children who were treated with respect, which does not always happen. All of the meals were delicious. We had filet, veal chop, prime rib, scallops, beef wellington, salmon and Mahi Mahi. In addition, we had appetizers and salads. No one had any complaints. As a matter of fact, everyone loved what they ordered. The place was packed, but the food did not suffer. I would definitely recommend the Carlton. The parking is in an underground lot, connected to the building and they validate your ticket, so the parking is free.

We were going to a show and had a reservation at 6:00. They told us we would have to wait at least 30 minutes, which was unacceptable. They then put us at a table in the lounge area where the waitress messed up our order, we could not hear due to the noise, and we were jostled by the bar patrons. The food was very good - what we got if it. Never again!

I've been to the Carlton several times, and it never disappoints. To be fair, there wasn't anything "wrong" with the service (I gave it four stars), but it's usually five stars, and on this trip, things seemed just a tad rushed with our waitress.

The food was excellent. I usually don't order seafood if I'm not in proximity of the ocean, but I will make an exception here for the burrimundi. It's not always on the menu (it wasn't this time), but if you ask for it, they may have it.

The steaks are always top-quality and cooked to perfection.

The wine list here is extensive, and reasonably priced for an upscale restaurant.

When I'm downtown, the Carlton is my go-to restaurant.

This was our second trip to the Carlton for dinner. We were very pleased with our experience. The food was delicious and the wine list is extensive. The service was outstanding. I would definitely recommend the Carlton for a great dinner before a show and look for ward to dining there again soon.

Great meal, waiter Bob was excellent. Only issue that I had was that we were seated near the front of the restaurant and we caught the cold breeze when the door was opened. We’ll be going back, though, as we had a nice time there.

Are you kidding me? The best place in Pittsburgh for food and that special service that is so hard to find! Drinks that you can actually taste the alcohol. Desserts that are so fresh! (The best banana cream pie). Not too many places like this in town. A gen!

I've lived in Pittsburgh since 1982 and have had many meals in many high quality restaurants. For whatever reason, it's been years since I've had a dinner at this place and I promise, it won't be years till I come back. One of the best meals my son and I have had in Pittsburgh.

Dinner and service were absolutely five star. Sadly, the waiters also setup the dinning room for the next day while I was otherwise enjoying my dinner. I don’t think it’s appropriate to be rolling around tables in the dining room where a client is eating.

When in Pittsburgh for a show, we always dine at The Carlton. The food is good, every time, something that doesn't always happen in Pittsburgh.

Being from 100 miles out of town and rural folks that do not desire to navigate the city, being able to park under the restuarnt (for free, to boot) is extremely convenient. In addtion, being able to leave the vehicle there and take their free limo to wherever you are going, both ways, makes the trip as hassle free as possible.

The staff is not only friendly, but they understand the show schedules in the city and will get you in and out in time to make your show, all without being rushed. When we had to go earlier than expected to Heinz Hall because of unusual traffic conditions (which the staff alerted us to), we did not get to enjoy dessert. The waiter, Bobby, said to ask for him when the show was over and he would take care of that. When we arrived back, after the show, the restuarant was no longer serving, but Bobby seated us and brought my wife and I a dessert for her birthday. It was a nice touch that they didn't need to do, but one that will have us dining there anytime we find ourselves in Pittsburgh.

The Carlton always delivers for us. The warmth with which we are received, the impeccable service, the creative and imaginative offerings, the civilized and muted ambiance... all spot-on.
Can’t say enough good things about Mr. Joyce, his staff, and this treasure of a restaurant. Don’t ever go away!

We always enjoy eating at The Carlton and using the limo service to the theaters. However, this time the limo did not pick us back up as scheduled. We waited out in the cold and called twice until we finally had the limo come back for us.

This was our 4th or 5th time here. Unfortunately, it was the most disappointing visit. The atmosphere is normally quiet and romantic. In this case there was a hockey game and it was loud and boisterous. Normally the wait staff is extremely attentive, but this evening the waiter was somewhat overwhelmed and the dining experience not great. The food was only marginal after many superb meals before. The free shuttle to the theater is part of the reason we dine here and that worked again. We will definitely call this visit an anomaly and go back. Wine selection and price is outstanding.
