A Pittsburgh favorite for over 20 years. Recipient of the Wine Spectator of Excellence 1995-2006 and The Dirona Award 2000 - 2006 (Distinguished Restaurants of North American).
The Carlton has a spectacular cuisine, complimented with an extensive wine list served by polished waiters in a beautiful atmosphere. Pittsburghers know the value of the Carlton making it the spot for business meetings to celebrations.

Generally excellent. The seafood was prepared perfectly. And everything else was first rate.
The big draw here is the wine list, which is extensive and presented on a iPad. Pricing is more than fair, representing better value than any of the other high-end restaurants in the area. It would be wise to peruse this wine list on line before dining since a careful consideration of the hundreds of options could take up most of the evening.
Like going back in time. White tablecloths and soft lighting, dark paneling, exceptional service. A great place for a romantic dinner or special occasion.
Four of us had the filet, grilled ranging from blue to medium, and all agreed best steak we’d had in years. Smart hostess helped w reservation, server Douglas supremely professional. Not too loud, you can converse. Welcoming and classy, classic, not snobbish or hipster. Inexpensive wines are appreciated, but sommelier should weed out bad ones and keep only quality wines that are also good value. Overall excellent restaurant experience that is rare nowadays. One usually pays more and rarely gets food, service and ambience this great.
My husband and I have been enjoying dinners at The Carlton for a decade...it's one of the reliable greats in Pittsburgh. The wait staff is superb - perhaps the finest team in the city. I could go on and on, but a few of the reasons we love The Carlton: 1) reasonable prices on a fantastic wine list; the owner doesn't gouge on wine. Yay! 2) The food is excellent. (Any duck pasta dish is a must.) 3) The service cannot be beat. Truly, you're spoiled by the wait staff. Bobby, Doug & Fay...wow!
Service was expeditious and friendly. Bobby was our waiter and he was on point. Good recommendations and awesome service abound from him. The food and desserts were phenomenal too. It was a bit noisy as the acoustics inside aren’t great.
The service was very good and the servers were very attentive. However, the wait for the food was lengthy for lunch.
All six of us had a fantastic meal & experience.
Our waiter was one of the best ever!
This is one of our favorite "go-to" restaurants on a theater evening. You can't beat the free parking and the limo service downtown! While prices seem to have increased since our last visit, the food was exceptional. I ate the Halibut Cheeks in a piccata sauce, my husband had the salmon, and our friend ordered the chilean sea bass. Without exception we were totally pleased! Even the sides were tasty and well-seasoned. Our only disappointment with the food was the (very) cold bread and butter and the lack of small side salads. Another disappointment has to do with an unusual damp odor that greets you once you enter the main restaurant from the wine shop. I've noticed this before, and it seems to be consistent. Surely management must be aware. Despite these small issues, we highly recommend the Carlton!
As other reviewers said, the Carlton is outdated, especially the bar. The dinner was OK. The service was nothing special. Never had a Caesar salad w/ tomatoes in it. Would not go back.
Once again an excellent birthday celebration!
Great experience. Would definitely go back. Would recommend food and service.
Saturday evening great time to go.
Top notch service with Enzo. But from bar to coat check to dining... never a disappointment. Great menu and wine list.
The Carlton never disappoints. Great meal for the price.
We had an excellent dinner at this older Pittsburgh favorite that has Reinvented itself. We all had seafood including the Mediterranean tuna, scallops, salmon, and shrimp. They have an excellent wine selection including multiple wines by the glass for each of the varietals. The service was excellent as well. On top of all of this is the excellent value of free parking indoors. The best value of all was free limo service to and from the cultural district.I don’t believe that anyone else in the city offers this excellent deal.
Had a lovely dinner. Food was great as usual and the service provided by Fay was terrific.
The waiter was very polite but forgot what our appetizers were when it came time for the bill. Also, this was for an anniversary and he kindly brought an ice cream dish. However, he wished my girlfriend a Happy Birthday. The food was above average. Nothing jumped out to me that would have me ranking the Carlton over competing restaurants in the city.
Fabulous dining experience. Our server was the best. And the food was delicious. Truly a five star experience.
Amazing food, wine, and service. The menu has a delightful mix of traditional favorites and new tastes, always prepared excellently, and the extensive wine list makes it easy to find the perfect pairing. The service is excellent, making the entire experience very enjoyable. This is our go to spot for fine food.
Carlton is our favorite restaurant. We go every year for our birthdays and events downtown. The service is good food is always excellent.
Excellent as always!
Bobby provided excellent service as always. My entree was superb- it is always appreciated when chef finds a creative presentation of chicken. Nothing ordinary for that dish. Who can complain about the wine selection and the price. Overall, the Carlton is my preferred dining spot in Pittsburgh.
Went to a Pens game, arrived late, they got us in and out in no time.
With a great meal in between. Service was fantastic.
Shuttle to the game, Is a tremendous perk.
I wasn't overly impressed by my meal at the Carlton. The service was outstanding and the complimentary parking in downtown Pittsburgh was nice but for close to $100, our meal was rather disappointing. We both agreed that we could easily find a significantly better meal at a much, much more reasonable price point.
The last few times there, the service has been slow. I made this reservation a half hour earlier to see if that helped and it did not. We had to leave for the show after an 1-1/2 time from seating to end of dinner.
The food was great. The service was wonderful. I highly recommend the toll house dessert.
Terrific as always
Delicious meal. The Baramundi was excellent. Bobby was a great server - attentive but not overboard. I’d definitely go back as everyone in our group enjoyed their meal.
Our server Doug and his assistant did an excellent job of pacing our meal just right to make it a very enjoyable and delicious experience for my wife and I.
Not much has changed here since the early 90’s. This is good for those who enjoyed that era.
We had a nice evening at the Carlton. Our waiter was Douglas and he made sure everything was perfect. The veal chop and steak were prepared as ordered. It is a wonderful place to have a great dinner in town.
Expectation was to have a pleasant anniversary celebration in Pittsburgh with my wife of thirty years. I was disappointed at how dreary the place seemed and how hectic the servers were, running around to keep up. Even at that, the service was not what I would call attentive.
Worst of all was the noise.
Table setting was extremely sparse with one fork, one knife and a napkin. Not what I regard as an upscale dinner place setting. Bread was served with some type of cream cheese concoction. We asked for butter which, after two requests arrived after the bread was nearly gone.
Worst of all was the noise.
The food was okay, scallops were not cooked through, the halibut cheeks were very good.
Worst of all was the noise.
I would choose not to go back nor recommend for a special occasion.
Service was fair, took long to get food and bread when requested.
Great Lobster bisque, veal chop, sea bass, but we did have a problem with the wine service.
Love this place before the symphony. Free parking and a ride to the cultural district!
Hands down my favorite restaurant in the city. We have never been disappointed in the service or food. Very pleased also with the price and quality of the cocktails. Highly recommend The Carlton!
As always the food and service at The Carlton never disappoints.
Food was fantastic. Great service. We dined there before a concert event and appreciated the complimentary limo service.
Very nice dinner. Would definitely recommend…especially before attending a concert or show. Free parking and limo to the show.....wonderful!
