Apart from two churches, Bulkeley’s home is the oldest building in Halifax, NS. Since 1786 his residence has been known as ‘The Carleton’. As one of Halifax’s premier live music venues for the past 10 years, The Carleton has earned numerous awards and accolades including three East Coast Music Awards and eight Music Nova Scotia Awards for Venue of the Year, and most recently the 2017 Canada Live Music Award for Best Small Venue in the Country.
An exciting complement to the refreshed space is the introduction of a superb new menu by The Carleton’s new Executive Chef, Michael Dolente. Whether you’re sampling a local beer or cocktail in the bar after work or enjoying a lazy weekend lunch in the restaurant, our staff will ensure you feel welcome in our home from home."
Always a pleasure to attend a music evening at The Carleton. The new menu has options for all including vegan, whole food plant based. A great menu with enough to please most hungry patrons. In addition to great food and beverages, you might luck in to some amazing talent playing.
I love the Carleton for music. Sometimes, I like the food. It has been hit and miss recently. Hit: Pakoras and the Pavlova. Miss: Thai salad, mussels, scallops and pork belly. Both my guest and myself suffered from terrible belly aches after the dinner. So Carelton, I’ll skip the seafood next time. I hope you decide to have a no miss, all hit menu soon.
Great atmosphere. Loved it. Felt like a jam in someones garage after the main event
Service was outstanding; (Thanks, Jerry!) The drinks were reasonably priced, but the food was expensive & portions were very small. Tasty, but minimal! The Carleton is still a great place to go for drinks and live entertainment, but next time we will eat prior to coming.
We were visiting Halifax from England and happened to notice there was live music on, so we booked a table. It was a great night. Good music, good food, lovely service, great ambience. I also liked the beer.
My husband and I absolutely loved the experience, food, music, service all top notch, will definitely be returning.
A nice spot, and they bring in good bands for music. Good cocktails. The unfortunate part is they were SUPER disorganized the night we were there. My girlfriend booked a table months in advance fora sold-out salsa band, only to be told that they weren't honouring the reservation when we got there. Several other people told us they had the same experience. They bought us a round of drinks to apologize. But it still reflected poorly on them that they offered reservations and then couldn't honour them. I'd still recommend, but don't count on them for reservations for a special night out or anything like that.
We found the food overpriced and not so special or unique to merit the cost. Tiny, tiny portions. It took a very long time to come out. We were at a tiny table in the corner that was difficult to reach. The server had trouble getting to us, so we felt we weren't tended to very often. The table was also crammed in beside two bigger tables and made me feel squished and uncomfortable. There was nowhere for my purse or jacket.
The staff and crowd were nice, the place is beautiful, and the music was awesome. I probably won't be back, however.
I was so looking forward to trying this place out and was happy we got a reservation. When we showed up however, there was a sold out concert one hour from the reserved time so we were told we couldn’t stay. The concert wasn’t listed on the site as being Friday night and nothing stopped us from making the reservation. I want to get past the awful first impression and give it a try another time but it will take me a while.
Went to see Cuban band on My 31st. The band was amazing but the crowd was toooo noisy when the band was playing, I’m sure they didn’t appreciate it either. Have some respect people!
Great night with Steve. Our waiter was very good. Lots of fun with friends.
Great service, Great Food, And Steve Poltz is amazing!!
Great ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We went to see Jane Siberry and decided after booking the tickets to reserve a table for supper as well. The concert was amazing, just wonderful and the food and service was excellent too.
I was delighted to have a wonderful meal served by an especially graceful server in what should have been impossible conditions. The bar was quite full but workable. Great food and fabulous entertainment, of course.
have been going for years mainly for the entertainment which is stellar - food and service also great it would be a great place to stop in anytime
Very noisy, had to yell to have a conversation, but our waiter was very accommodating and managed to get the music turned down, so it was more enjoyable to eat sit and talk until the artist started. Loved that the ticket price was so reasonable for such a wonderful artist. Loved her.
Absolutely loved the food..actually enough so that I ordered seconds of a couple of items! ;) The music was wonderful and the ambience perfect for the venue!
The Carleton delivers fabulous entertainment and great food at an approachable price. The menu is limited, but changes often. Their kitchen staff are delivering wondrous food. Our party of four were all more than pleased with their meal. The Carleton is a wonderful place for great food and live entertainment.
Great venue for musician/songwriters. The menu is also great for small plates. The service is amazing
Great sound quality of the performances and look forward to attending regularly.
Excellent concert, food, drinks and service. The only small criticism is that the tables were very close together.
The Carleton is one of my favourite live music venues, and has been for years. The new menus are always inspired, and the service impeccable.
I make the drive in from the Valley whenever I can, and it's worth it every time.
We really enjoyed our time at the Carleton to see Steve Poltz. Only things we would change would be food related. The burger was good but would have been better with at least one vegetable on it and other condiments offered like ketchup. The mussels were decent but lacked in flavour from the sauce and a bit on the overdone side. Drinks, ambiance and music = outstanding!
Our group had a great table in view of the stage. The entertainment (Steve Poltz) was off the charts fantastic. Our food was delicious
Love everything about the Carleton. We continue to return on a regular basis. The food , drinks and entertainment are always superb.
I took my mother here for the mother's Day brunch. Although the menu was limited, we both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the complimentary mimosas were an added bonus. Our server, Matt, was extremely kind and the live music was excellent.
Great food, service and live background musician!
Always a great time at the Carleton. Excellent food, service and beverages. Seems most would agree with that as The Carleton was just awarded an ECMA award for Venue of the Year. Well deserved, l say.
Server was not pleasant. Made the entire experience poor.
Great food and music. Fun night out. Would certainly recommend. Laura Merrimen offered us lovely dining music and the house band was amazing.
My birthday with family and watching my favourite band play
As always, we go for the Live performance which the Carlton always respects by requesting the audience to remain quiet during the performance. Consequently, it’s about the best place to go in Halifax to hear good music. The food is very good also.
Amazing dinner and music, as usual! Love the intimate atmosphere!
The service was impeccable. We were seated at the very back, seating is to close together to move around to get out to go to washroom. When show started no room from my spouse to sit beside me during show. I looked at his back most of the night so not very good for a date night.
The seafood linguine is amazing. The service was fantastic. The environment and the music the best ever (Madison Violet). Will definitely be back soon! Such an amaxing night!
A great night out. We were so glad to see Madison Violet! We are coming back next month for Steve Poltz..
I frequent The Carleton often and I’m rarely disappointed. I love the room for top notch live music. You’d think they wouldn’t have to care about the food or service but they do, about both. I appreciate what it takes to make a good mushroom risotto. What they do, they do well. They know how to serve a bottle of wine too. They really appreciate their regular customers.
The Carleton is a great place to dine and listen to live entertainment. It's an intimate setting with the entertainment, and the food is very good. A first rate evening that is hard to beat.
I love the "listening room" policy! How many times I've gone to a show elsewhere only to be disappointed by all the disrespectful chatter keeping me from enjoying the reason I'm there....the music! Great food, excellent service and wonderful ambiance. Until next time!
