The Captain's Wife in Penarth is a country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character. Our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

The Captain's Wife was originally Sully House, a house originally owned by a captain. Legend has it that when his wife died, her body was kept in a box that was mistaken for treasure and stolen. A small fleet of fishing vessels were located at Swanbridge harbour and it is likely that that the row of cottages, that became the pub, were later the traditional homes of the local fishermen and their families.

Right on the shore overlooking the waters of the Bristol Channel, The Captain's Wife has a good tale to tell. Pirates and smugglers visited Sully Island which can be reached (with care) from the pub during low tide.

    We visit here most weeks and are always pleased with the service, food and atmosphere. This week we were celebrating a birthday and an early Mother’s Day meal. All were pleased with the food and service. Highly recommended

    New Year’s Eve dinner was fabulous! Staff were lovely and the food was amazing. It was a 4 course meal with Prosecco on arrival and all for the great value of £30 pp. very happy customers and highly recommended

    Staff are warm and friendly. Location is outstanding. Food was average. Parents had a Caesar Salad with Chicken and it was dry/over cooked. I had Sunday lunch, roast beef, it was OK. Nothing worse than recommending somewhere for people to eat and the food being a let down. It’s not cheap.

    Came here for dinner when on holiday in the area. Loved it and came back again 2 nights later. Good food, friendly staff, lovely old pub on sea front. Thoroughly recommend.
