The Café at The Chanler
The Chanler's casual and lively restaurant, The Café, serves a Mediterranean-inspired classic New England menu for lunch and dinner year-round. Whether you are sitting at one of our indoor tables enjoying a panoramic view of the ocean, dining amid the glowing lights of the seasonal outdoor terrace or perched at the bar, you will experience our culinary team's modern interpretation of familiar classics, infused with creativity and local New England flavors.
I didn't think the menu was that great, and the food was only OK. Beautiful setting and great atmosphere, but I would try a different place next time.
The appetizers and first course (salad — greens fresh and nicely dressed; chowder was fair — light more like a bisque). Both of the men in the group ordered fish which was dry, overcooked and unappealing presented.
This was our 6th stay at Chanler and every time the experience is amazing. The food is some of the best we’ve ever had. We had the baked stuffed lobster for 2 one night and was hands down the best seafood dish we’ve had. Not to be outdone is their new scallop roll and amazing breakfast omelettes. We would recommend them to anyone who enjoys food and a great service experience. We will be back soon.
Fantastic as always. The chef is a magician. If you are in Newport, you simply must go to Cafe at The Chanler. We will be back.
Very pleasant. Very relaxing. The view was awesome. The food was awesome as well. The chef is very innovative. The staff was very good and very attentive. Looking forward to the next opportunity to enjoy the dining there.
Hubby and I celebrating birthday lunch on a Sunday. Ambiance and views are lovely, very relaxing and picturesque. Unfortunately, the food doesnt parallel the place. The shellfish platter was tasty, crisp and fresh except for the overcooked shrimp. Just not enough for two people to share. We also shared a Croque Monsieur which was unlike any I have had here or abroad. Why would you serve this selection with French fries or coleslaw?? It was practically without any Greuyere cheese and a tiny piece of ham on a tiny piece of bread. A nice side salad would have been more appropriate. Dessert was the best part of the meal. Carrot cake and Boston Cream pie were very tasty. Overall, I should have listened to others who said it isnt worth it, but I tend to want to see for myself. If you want views and pricey Newport, it's your place.
Asked for burger well done. It was rare. Couldn’t eat it. Not impressed with the menu but dessert was good. Very loud seated near the bar.
Truly a beautiful facility, from the gates entering the property, and valet parking to the cozy lounge and the small dining room. The menu is not extensive but interesting with both land and sea offerings. Started with a salmon appetizer followed by wonderful salads. We shared the seafood cioppino. Ample and tasty. Shared a deconstructed Boston Cream pie dessert. (Kind of a piece of the pie pulled apart and served on a narrow dish). different but excellent. Our waitress, Kim was professional and checked on us throughout dinner. Only criticisms were: (1) The lighting. OK to have the lights turned down, but the candle setup on the tables are way too dim. and (2) Noise. The wood surroundings do not absorb the loud talking both in the dining room and the adjacent lounge. That being said, certainly worth the trip !
Service was sub-par at best. We put in the notes it was our 5th anniversary- no one acknowledged it until the hostess at the end, when it was too late. We had to ask for refills on our drinks and water, and were told by our server, Rodney, “sorry for the delay, I have another party I am waiting on”. As a paying guest for a special occasion, we don’t need to have an excuse on the lack of service we received for our $100 lunch. Will not be coming back and will be sharing our experience with our people warning them that they will be disappointed.
Absolutely wonderful!!! Great bartender, gorgeous spot!!! My favorite place in Newport!!!
Spectacular time celebrating my mother birthday. Staff was engaged and knowledgeable of the history of the beautiful historical architecture. Memorable occasion and great food.
Place is gorgeous, food was terrible...could not cut the steak with a knife..management was responsive..allowed us to reorder another entree...credited two meals..free deserts..we would go back because we have has good meals here in the past
Beautiful location, lovely property, inside and out.
Our server was very knowledgeable and gave us great recommendations on menu items, including local beers, and she was so pleasant and attentive.
We will definitely visit the Cafe again when we return to Newport!
Fancy dining with homemade fresh food. Nothing exceptional (some bland dishes, some fairly tasty, all priced according to NYC standards), special occasion ambience, and loud mid-50s bar crowd. Service very good.
Unbelievably beautiful space and incredible oceanfront views, but there was only one server attending to multiple tables and so it took many tries to get the server’s attention during the course of the dinner. It also took the kitchen over an hour to prepare our food, which I think can definitely be improved. My husband and I ordered the Mac & Cheese, the Chicken Roast, and the Lobster Roll followed up with the coffee and Chocolate Mousse for dessert. The food was good but not extraordinary, given that these are dishes we tend to order a lot at restaurants around America and the world, so it was a bit disappointing. We were also underwhelmed by the portion sizes, and felt hungry again a short three hours later. But having said that, the chocolate mousse was OUTSTANDING. We plan to be back for the gorgeous sunset views, the rich candle-lit ambience, the beautiful decor, and the lively bar scene. Certainly an amazing find in Newport in the recently updated Chanler hotel. Overall, upscale experience without breaking the bank, warm and inviting environment for families, intimate enough for couples, and bar option for solo diners. Definitely make a reservation because it gets busy and all the remaining tables were full booked. There was a whole other dining space within the restaurant with much more seating, but it was closed for some reason. Thanks for a great evening of Newport hospitality, we’ll be back!
Food and staff were amazing.......
Great bar and friendly people. Nice Upscale casual dinner. Fresh ingredients.
We have only had dinner at The Chanler previously so this was our first time for lunch and it was exceptional! I would highly recommend it. The view does not get any better and the service is the best on the island! There are many options for lunch on the menu!
Visiting Newport. This is a gem.
Two of the meals were good but the third was not. The fish on the fish and chips dish was about 3 1/2 inches long and 1/2 inch thick. The hard coating was twice as thick as the fish and the fish ( what there was of it!) was dry. My friend couldn’t eat it and her husband was kind enough to try and eat it. She ate the French fries which were good. My guests were polite enough not to say anything but I thought you should know. I’ll bring friends back again but definitely tell them not to order fish and chips. Phyllis Lohrum
What an incredible experience!!! The view is absolutely BREATHTAKING, food is delicious, service is excellent, and atmosphere is laid back and comfortable, yet exquisite. All the staff were very friendly, helpful, and genuinely kind. DEFINITELY will visit again.
Beautiful location, elegant staff. A true delight.
Beautiful atmosphere - Maggie our waitress was extremely sweet and enjoyable- looking forward to going back
Little pricey but overall a nice evening. Nice view, waiter Teddy was very good server
Always a beautiful place to dine. We celebrated a 10 year anniversary at the Chanler and love taking our kids to see it for lunch during family vacations. Views can’t be beat.
Food was good but obscenely overpriced for the quantity received. My kids tortellini was $21 and literally has 7 tortellini in it. Very disappointing.
Beautiful outdoor setting, exceptional view, good food and service.
Fabulous place well worth the trip even from hours away. Absolutely gorgeous and such a lovely atmosphere.
We enjoyed our lunch outside at The Cafe. It was very enjoyable. The staff were very attentive. The lobster flat bread was a excellent starter. Our lunch entree’s were delicious. Now the French Pear Martini was excellent! We will return to The Chanler and Cafe very soon.
We had a wonderful lunch on the covered patio. We felt like we were at a resort in Bermuda with the ocean breeze, the landscaping and the view of Easton's beach. The food was delicious and our server was friendly and attentive. It's expensive and the portions are rather small, but we were treating our friends for a special lunch and we really enjoyed ourselves.
The waitress was very attentive and we sat in a love seat in front of a table on the sea wall that made it feel like we were on the back porch of our home overlooking the ocean. Excellent food and drinks. Highly recommend!
Our experience on the whole was relatively good. However, my daughter had lobster roll and felt that it didn't compare to some of the other restaurants in the area with quality and amount.
Feel that for the charge there could have been much more lobster. You are in competition with many other very good restaurants in the area that do serve the lobster roll.
You can't beat your ambiance, it is lovely. Just need to improve on the lobster roll.
I do wonder if you will take this advice into consideration????? You have probably heard this before !!!!
We were thrilled to get the small loveseat table outside with the perfect view of the water. Food was flawless, as was service. It all combined for a wonderful experience all around. Thank you.
When in Newport, always make a stop at The Chanler, beautiful grounds ,view of the bay, always freshly prepared food ,and service is incredible!
Food was delicious! Service was great and the view is lovely. I would highly recommend
Mediocre dining experience. Less than memorable mussels. Both quality of mussels and sauce were disappointing. - A most basic salad of greens and two tiny tomatoes with a dressing that tasted mostly of vinegar. Beautiful setting but disappointing meal. We’ve eaten at “The Chanler” over the years during the jazz weekend - it’s always been hit or miss, but have decided not to return. We will miss the exquisite view and romantic setting, but not the food.
service was very slow- they ran out of salmon - alternative was overly salted halibut- and it was overpriced- would not recommend other than go for a drink and enjoy the view
Food was good. Drinks were very pricey. Our wait staff could have been a little more attentive. While we were waiting to order he was out on the patient talking with coworkers.
