The Butternut Tree
A thoughtfully designed open kitchen allows guests to be part of the action. There are no walls, enabling discovery of Chef Downey’s style, both as a chef and a leader in the kitchen.
The Butternut Tree focuses on replacing global sources of sweet, sour, bitter, and salty with unique ingredients from our home and native land. From budding foodies to seasoned supporters of local provisions and purveyors, this is the place where guests can experience the unexpected.
We celebrated our anniversary here. It was our first time, and we absolutely loved the experience from start to finish. Can't say enough great things about the Halibut!
Great service. Very knowledgeable. All Adams recommendations were excellent.
we went your restaurant for our Anniversary dinner.
Everything was great. We enjoyed our dinner.
Our server Adam was great to have knowledge of all of our questions of food and drinks.
We definitely come back to your restaurant.
Fantastic! Best food I ever had!
Good food. Too pretentious in the presentation. Rock fish delicious. Berries and cheese for dessert lovely
Absolutely the best service ever . Great wine list, great food and a view of the river valley what could be better . Thanks to our wonderful server!!
Edmonton’s best kept secret!! We had an INCREDIBLE experience here and will be recommending the place to friends!
Amazing serving staff and chef ! Very knowledgeable about the food, ingredients and wine . Excellent restaurant for exploring Canadian cuisine and wines .
This could have been perfect scores for all categories however dessert is just lacking. With so many fruits in season in Canada right now, the options are always a disappointment come dessert (this was our second visit). However everything else was outstanding.
Excellent and creative dishes made with Canadian ingredients. Our server Adam was excellent - knowledgeable about the menu and provided us a lot of background on the dishes.
Our servor Adam was very informative and had an infectious energy about him. We had the tasting menu, beautiful presentation but didn't have as much depth of flavor as I was expecting, missing some umami? I really appreciate the sourcing of local and Canadian grown ingredients, the broccolini and marrow was the table favorite, with the seabuck thorn ice-cream coming in a close second. The restaurant itself is beautiful, and offers a great view of the Highlevel Bridge and streetcar. A little pricey I thought, but overall a great experience.
this is my second review this is one of the finest resaurnat in edmonton. the food is outstanding the service excptioand the setting is wonderful i only oject to their policy about canadain wines
A gem. Highly recommended.
We really enjoyed our our experience! Food & service were top notch!
Great food! Amazing view. Great place to bring American guests to enjoy the full Canadian menu. Delicious and innovative menu. Can’t wait to go back!
The service was incredible slow it did not appear that busy to be so slow.My husband ordered a second drink and waited about twenty minutes to get,the two beer cans from the first order still sat at the end of the table that we put there hoping to get someone's attention. If you are considered one of the best restaurants service should be somewhere at the top as well. The food was good but very small portions and very pricey .I ordered the hen in the woods thinking I would be getting some sort of poultry dish(33.00)but all I got was a bunch of mushrooms.Sorry,we heard so much about this place but after receiving such poor service and the hefty bill we left disappointed .
Food was great, but highly over priced for the volume of food provided, eg 2 medium mushrooms as a $18 appetizer. Main meal might have been 4oz, but but for >$40. If this place doesn’t make it, it won’t be because of the food, but the prices
The food is exceptional. A work of art. Love the dishes also a work of art. Our server Tim was so informative and great to chat with. Will be back for sure!!!
The Butternut Tree in Edmonton Alberta was outstanding, from appetizers to dessert. You could tell the food was prepared with great attention to detail in the presentation and the taste. Our server Adam was knowledgable in all aspects of the menu and such a pleasant young man. I would say the price for each course was very reasonable considering what the chef brought to the table and we will most definitely be going back!
Butternut was a unique experience , the waiter ( Aidian ) was very informative of the all " Canadian " menu . There was some very different items , Example - Asparagus soup/ menu should state it is a cold soup ! There are no salads / disappointing , why ??? My guest had one of the vegetarian plates 3/4 of it cold , why ?? My applause to the owner as the liquor & food menu would take a lot of research .. But as a first time guest , a little more clarity on the written & online menu would have helped .
The food was fresh, innovative and interesting. The view was very nice and once the server got over his nerves the service was spot on. Chef's use of ground crickets was very interesting and a tasty complement. We had 8 courses of the tasting menu with a perfectly matched wine pairing. We plan on a return meal
This was an amazing meal. A great view if the river valley complements the wonderful decor. The Chef accommodated three Keto and one polo-pescitarian diet. The serving staff modified the wine pairings to match these changes. I personally truly appreciate the commitment to Canadian sourcing. I loved the wine selections.
Favorites were the Tartare and the Lamb. Everything was excellent but those two stood out. Even the single malt was Canadian (and wonderful).
only thing I found odd was that when we arrived there was only one other party in the restaurant and the hostess led us to a table right next to them when there were much nicer tables with more privacy available.
Birthday - lovely experience
I highly recommend The Butternight Tree. The service was amazing and our waiter was passionate about the food, the menu, and ensuring we had an amazing experience. The ambience was nice with great big windows and reclaimed wood on the walls. The food was unique. Most definitely an unique place to attend for celebrating special occasions.
Really lovely restaurant and staff. For the price, I was absolutely expecting better flavour but the food was beautifully presented.
This was a bit of a culinary adventure that we weren't expecting but thoroughly enjoyed. The Butternut Tree makes the supreme effort to source all of their products from Canada and to keep all items within our borders. This meant some very creative modifications to more common dishes and drinks. Lots of foods one wouldn't normally see on a menu, but all well done and delicious. Our server, Aidan, was extremely knowledgeable and well-trained. He knew the menu inside out and could often recount stories of where the food was sourced from. Well worth the price tag!
Outstanding, as always
Always great! Food is excellent, I have even gotten used to the all Canadian wine list.
They we out of one of the 5 entries. Service was slow and restaurant was only half full. One entree had to be returned for being too salty. Food was only average from a taste perspective.
Great service. Liked that everything was Canadian sourced
Birthday - it was fantastic! Great service and food. Will definitely return!
Good food, excellent knowledgeable waiter.
We arranged for a date night for my parents at the Butternut Tree and they couldn’t say enough about the restaurant! The food was creative, unique, and delicious, the server was knowledgeable and engaging, and they couldn’t help but send us play-by-play updates through their meal. We chose this place based on a recommendation without having eaten there before but it is certainly on my “must eat there” list! Thank you for making their special evening so memorable.
We are always excited to see what comes up on the menu... always a culinary adventure.
The view is lovely. I really enjoyed the food and the staff was so attentive during the entire meal. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone!

Amazing dining experience! My partner and I had the tasting menu with wine pairing. The meal was the most exciting and delicious education of Canadian cuisine! The staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. Hats off to the sommelier as well for a stunning wine pairing. Will definitely be back. YEG needs more dining experiences like The Butternut Tree
Best restaurant in Edmonton. Very innovative with great technique. Great attention to detail and just a great experience.
Great presentation. Since food and all spirits Canadian only it was unique. I hope the concept survives. It has been two years. Definitely would go back. Beautiful view of river valley and legislature grounds
