About this restaurant

The Butcher’s Daughter Venice is a plant-forward restaurant, bar, juicery, and “vegetable slaughterhouse.” Located in the vibrant Venice neighborhood, we treat fruits and vegetables with the same care a butcher would meat: chopping, filleting, and carving fresh produce into healthy vegetarian dishes and pressing them into vibrant juices.

Under the guidance of our Culinary Director Richard Rea, our menu changes every season, offering 100% vegetarian dishes with many vegan and gluten-free options. We take pride in our great selection of wines, craft cocktails, and mocktails, ensuring there’s something for every taste. We also offer take-out and delivery for those who prefer to enjoy our meals at home.

Named one of the best supper spots in Venice by the LA Times, we serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, creating a celebrated dining experience with in-season ingredients that nourish both body and soul.

Dear The Butcher's Daughter Management, My deep admiration for your Venice establishment—from its captivating ambiance and delectable cuisine to its exemplary management and typically stellar service—remains steadfast. However, my visit on May 26, 2025, presented an uncharacteristic series of disappointments I feel compelled to share. My arrival, met by a genuinely welcoming receptionist who seamlessly navigated my OpenTable reservation to my second-favorite seat, promised a smooth experience. Water arrived promptly, yet what followed was a perplexing twenty-five-minute wait to place an order. A distant gesture from our designated waiter, which I interpreted as an invitation to order, led only to his prolonged disappearance. My growing frustration compelled me to flag down a manager, who, with commendable grace, promised swift attention. It was then that my waiter reappeared, offering an apology and the curious explanation, "I thought you were waiting for an order." This incident underscored a fundamental service disconnect: one should approach a patron to converse, not gesture across a room. The disappointment deepened as my primary culinary objective—your always-exquisite soup of the day, a true highlight paired with its delightful bread—was declared unavailable by the waiter. My initial confusion, verging on a decision to depart, led instead to ordering hummus (which was good) and pizza (which was excellent). Yet, the lingering irony struck at meal's end when, upon inquiry, the waiter casually announced the soup was now available. Despite these notable missteps in service coordination and communication regarding the soup, the inherent quality of your kitchen and the proactive response from your manager reaffirmed my affection. This single visit, though flawed, has not diminished my overall regard for The Butcher's Daughter. Sincerely, J Marshall Schoonover

It was Memorial Day and they just didn’t have enough staff. We waited an hour for our food. Normally we love this place but today they don’t deliver.

The seamlessness of the experience began even before I arrived, thanks to OpenTable for a smooth reservation process. Upon entering, the hostess greeted me with a genuine welcome, acknowledging and honoring my reservation for Table 27B, one of my favorite spots. Her attentiveness was truly remarkable; she must have meticulously reviewed her notes, because without a word from me, she preemptively apologized for not having my usual Scorpion Tabasco hot sauce available. That kind of thoughtful recognition is incredibly kind and truly sets a positive tone. Later, the manager made a point to stop by and say hello, a touch of personal connection that speaks volumes about their commitment to guest satisfaction. A Minor Hiccup However, even in paradise, a minor ripple can disturb the calm. This visit, for the first time, presented a slight hiccup in an otherwise flawless record. As is my usual practice, I intended to settle my bill in-kind. I clearly communicated to my waiter that I needed a printed receipt for my check, number 54, for this purpose. He acknowledged, but then, quite inexplicably, vanished without the requested receipt. After a patient wait, I sent a message with another staff member, confirming he received it. Still, nothing. When the manager passed by, I appealed to them, and finally, after what felt like an unnecessary delay, my waiter reappeared with a rather bemused, "Would you like a receipt?" It was a moment of mild irritation, a curious lapse in an otherwise attentive service. Despite this minor misstep, The Butcher's Daughter continues to shine brightly. It's a place where the food speaks for itself, inviting you to visualize and savor every bite. J Marshall Schoonover

I love the vibe here and the food is yummy. I guess my only gripe would be that it’s mostly breakfast food which I’m not into. I wish there were more entrée salads.

Went for brunch with friends. There’s a parking garage nearby but otherwise you’re fighting for precious street parking. Super cute space. Enjoyed everything we ordered, especially the impossible chorizo. Service was really slow though.

Quintessential SoCal vegetarian restaurant. The green salad with pistachios is so fine, as is everything I’ve tried so far. Don’t be fooled by the shabby chic decor and hard stools; there’s precision, craft and taste in the kitchen. Portions are generous and look very attractive.

I’ve only ever dined here for breakfast / brunch and it’s wonderful during that time of day. Food is dependable and fresh. I like to take business meetings here and get together with friends. It’s casual with a feminine twist, a lot of amazing juice elixirs, and creative coffee drinks - I’m looking at u rose cardamon latte!

It’s way too loud. The music from the DJ on Fridays dinner service was great-except it was too loud. If the music was turned down a little, it would have been way more enjoyable to listen to. We loved the music choice.
