The Butcher Shop
Inspired by Chef Barbara Lynch’s travels throughout France and Italy, The Butcher Shop is the perfect place for a glass of wine and a small bite, a meal with friends, and to enjoy the South End from our Waltham St. outdoor seating area. The menu highlights meat and produce from local farms and vendors with whom Chef Barbara has built decades-long relationships. Classic dishes include The Butcher Shop bolognese, spicy tomato soup, and a rotating selection of seasonal salads and sides.

My steak was ok not super. The service quite slow. It was cold in the restaurant.
Terrible service and undercooked food. 👎
Great staff and incredible food. i would recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Steak entre was very good. Cheese plate appetizer was good. Red wine by glass was good but a little over priced.
We wanted to visit The Butcher Shop for a while due to its outstanding ambient, outside sitting options and finally we had the chance. I think it was a good experience overall but I cannot tell it was impressive as well. We tried the creamy tomato soup, TBS burger and NY steak. All was good but I don't think they were any more than decent and worthed the money. The service and glass wine options were nice.
Made a reservation, but a sudden work issue required delaying it a day. They worked with me to reschedule. On the new day, we arrived 12 minutes early and were still seated promptly. Their outdoor table area was safely spaced and we got one of the ones at the end of the patio area, so there wasn't much foot traffic straying near our table. The food needs no commentary besides "excellent." Haven't had a bad meal here yet.
While the food was delicious the service left much to be desired. Wait staff was busy but it seemed like everyone around us was getting attention while we were virtually forgotten.
In spite of the pandemic restrictions, we had a lovely evening. We ate outside and felt very safe. The food was excellent and the service was great. Highly recommended.
We have wanted to try this restaurant for a while. Everything was great. Next B & G or Menton!
Place is overpriced. Food is good quality but the whole experience isn’t workgroup it 3 people $250
The server didn’t really explain anything, we ordered a cheese board and she didn’t even tell us what was on it and it didn’t specify in the menu either. She didn’t seem too engaging and didn’t like explain any covid-precautions either. It was a weird dining experience to be honest.
I like this place and I’ve been many times. Tonight I really found the portion sizes to be too small. The tagliatelle is delicious but it’s just not enough for an entree.
Incredible experience! We loved the Strip Loin and Wagyu steaks
10/10 always. Even with some modifications due to covid the experience was amazing for our anniversary. Small and intimate but the quality of a major steak house.
Good food, good service
Great ambiance. Great food. Great wine. What else do you need?
Phenomenal food. The sopressini with crispy garlic and mushrooms was savory and delicious and the wagyu sirloin was absolutely perfectly cooked. Will be returning sooner rather than later.
I always like the Butcher Shop, was the go place for many yrs. With the pandemic been trying to give local restaurants business, even though at times not very comfortable going out to dinner. When I arrived I was surprised to see in the menu the 1 hr 15m time limit for a table for 2. How is one supposed to drink a bottle of wine in less than an hour when it took at least 20 minutes to place our order??? I understand that during these times one can 'not longer' hang out as used to (with the limited # of outside seats). However there is a way to politely encourage customers to rap-up the dinner vs. just stating "your time is up, you just exceeded the limit at the table" and then walk away. We had just finished our dinner and would have been happy to rap-up. Just the way it was handled did not leave me with the desire to go back again anytime soon. Perhaps, the same could have been accomplished by the hostess by handling the situation a bit different with just using different words and showing a bit more of sympathy!
The service was great. The food was not. We had the bologneae which was tasteless. We had the sirloin which was tough and overcooked. The meat may as well have come from Walmart and then it I was overcooked. The food was beyond disappointing.
I've been before and enjoyed t tough to come back. Covid does make service a challenge, but the outside tables were just fine. Good food and an extensive and reasonable wine list are the reasons to go. Limited offerings now, but enough to make anyone happy.
I loved it. Unreal burger. We did burgers and sausage plate to share first and then the rib eye. Great bar and wine selection
Not what The Butcher Shop used to be - service mediocre, food below average, not enjoyable...
My husband and I went here for our anniversary. It was drizzling out and our reservation was for outside. All the tables had umbrellas except for ours (including one table that had two). When we arrived the first thing stated was your table is outside, but we don’t have an umbrella for you. I was visibly disappointed but asked if there were any open tables inside or if there was a later reservation and we could just come back then. The hostess said no and basically you can eat at this table or leave. I had to ask that the table be wiped down, which she did. After we had sat there for a while, the hostess did bring an umbrella over for us. I appreciate that she ended up figuring something out for us, but I would have appreciated a kinder, apologetic tone. Honestly if the tone was different and we didn’t have an umbrella, I would have left a better review. Also our waitress seemed nervous and didn’t check on drinks. It felt like a very mechanical process to go out. I probably won’t be going back to this restaurant.
Food was phenomenal! Staff was so wonderful and attentive. Very wonderful experience here.
We loved the ambiance and wine selection. We ordered the cheese board and sausage board, cheese board was very good, sausage board was mediocre at best. However, our experience was mostly ruined by this “Karen” who was our waitress. Her attitude came across like she she did not want to be at work. You’re welcome does not appear to be in her vocabulary nor did she sound like she had the ability to be pleasant. Unfortunately this put a damper on our experience there but the cheese was good.
Tasty food and friendly staff. Would come here everyday if I could!
It was an amazing experience meal! And the staff were all so sweet and fast!
Great bistro, great neighborhood restaurant
First time & everything was great! Will recommend/ cone again !
So glad to be dining at Butcher Shop again. The service was excellent and the food was amazing.
I was very happy with our experience, and the waitress was attentive even when the restaurant was slammed.
It was a Sunday, but still I expected a more vibrant vibe. The service was very lackluster- waiters were low energy, didn’t bring spoons with soup, didn’t offer bread or crackers with pate, etc. also they didn’t have mocktails or much non alcoholic options - a disappointed experience
Food was amazing. Our waitress was great too, but it seemed like there were 2-3 people working our table throughout our visit. It seemed like our waitress may have been overwhelmed. We had longer than normal waits for things. We weren’t in a ru h so it was ok, but for the money it’d be awesome to have the service match the food.
Server didn’t want to engage at all when we asked her questions about the menu and seemed annoyed but food was delicious. Doesn’t make a lot of sense to have a huge block of wood in the middle of the restaurant when you’ve already had many reviewers comment on the tight space. Otherwise a very cozy aesthetic, not good for a group but perfect for a date night
The Butcher lived up my expectations based on their website. It was a fabulous local restaurant with friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere. It was a great venue for the group I was with but I believe I would have had an equally great time sitting at the bar solo.
The Ribeye changed my life. It was perfect. The foie gras was also delicious, but incredibly sweet. We joked that it would be better as a dessert than an appetizer.
Absolutely love this place. Great wine list. Interesting menu (plenty of choices for non-meat eaters like me, despite the name of the place), and top-notch food preparation. Cheese selection is also terrific. Portions are a bit small for the prices charged, but all in, quality reigns. And the servers are personable and efficient. 5 stars.
Wanted to try a new place in the south end - was recommended this place by coworkers. Great food and ambiance, a little pricy and small portions but overall great experience. Awesome cocktails!
Food is not as good as it used to be. I put in the notes that it’s our anniversary. I don’t think our waitress was even aware.
Everything was wonderful as always
