The Butcher Shop
Inspired by Chef Barbara Lynch’s travels throughout France and Italy, The Butcher Shop is the perfect place for a glass of wine and a small bite, a meal with friends, and to enjoy the South End from our Waltham St. outdoor seating area. The menu highlights meat and produce from local farms and vendors with whom Chef Barbara has built decades-long relationships. Classic dishes include The Butcher Shop bolognese, beef tartare, and a rotating selection of seasonal salads and sides.

Love this place. Everything about it from the drinks and food to the staff and music.
Loved everything. Incredible server, bartender, greater, food, music. Loved the experience.
Delicious food, beautiful outdoor seating on side street, very friendly and helpful wait staff, great wine and cocktails!
Wow, what a horrible experience, never coming here again. We’ve had dinner here before and had a great experience, but this restaurant is just awful now. First, the service was bad: had to ask for water multiple times, asked for no sauce on steak, and steak was brought with awful sauce all over it + on fries making them soggy. Steak took about 1.5 hours to receive, and was half-raw and the other half was super well-done (we ordered medium rare). Salad had so much vinegar on it, you could barely taste anything else - and burrata was not fresh. Then, got profiteroles for dessert which were completely stale, and the ice cream was icy. Never coming back here.
Worst service I’ve had in Boston. Appetizers didn’t come out for 1:15 mins after we sat down, half of the menu wasn’t available, order was wrong. Have been twice and both times it was the same story.
We had a fabulous time and a great dinner. It was everything we heard it was. Will definately go back and go to her other restaurants.
The worst dining service we’ve had in 12+ months. The table beside us sat down after us, finished their meals and paid before our server even took our order. Our water glasses were never refilled. We were never given the opportunity to buy a second glass of wine. When our food finally came out, the people who brought it to our table had to use two pot holders each to hold the plates because they were so hot - it was obvious that the plates had sat under heat lamps for a long time.
Overall, just a poor dinning experience. I’d be very hesitant to return and/or recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Disappointed. Very limited menu and they don’t have the cheese and meat boards any more which was the reason we choose the place as it was what we had gone there for in the past. We should have looked at the website but didn’t think we would need to
They hadn’t saved even seat for a reservation at the bar so one of us was in a counter chair a foot below the other, it was simply awkward. There was a woman next to us who could similarly had one chair of each height, but she was solo they should have either reserved two chairs of the same height for the reservation or requested one from her ( one chair was being used by her purse) it’s a tad weird / uncomfortable to spend nearly 200 on burgers and salad and not even be in the same chairs… food / bartender were both excellent.
I had the Osso Bucco, and it is a must-try, still can't believe how good it was. My husband got the rabbit dish and loved it too. We weren't fun of the saffron profiterole though. Service was super slow as most people mentioned here.
Fantastic food, but very slow service. We had a 7:15pm reservation and did not received drinks until 8:30pm.
The food was outstanding, as always. That said, the menu has changed quite a bit. And the service was meh. For a place called The Butcher Shop, there weren't a ton of meat dishes to choose from. To be fair, my short ribs were delicious. But I remember having to choose between filet and sirloin and skirt steak and probably a couple other beef options. What they had was great, but seemed limited. Also, I ordered a glass of wine when our server arrived. After our app was served, she asked if I wanted a refill. I said to bring one with my entree. It never came. I specifically ordered the wine to go with my short ribs, and had no wine to drink with them. A little disappointing. Not the place I remember.
Bland food. Slow service. Overpriced. Not worth your visit. There’s a reason this place is sparsely busy when all the restaurants around it are full.
Great place, the food was spectacular! There doing well bouncing back from the pandemic will definitely return!
6/5/21. Our favorite restaurant! The foods are absolutely delicious.
Food and service is excellent. Prices are high and the lack of real liquor lowers my overall rating. Also, wine list is average at best.
I’ll start off by saying this would have been a 5-star review had the service been even decent. It’s was cold and rainy yet we were seated at what was clearly a patio table shoved right inside the entrance. It’s a holiday weekend and restaurants have just reopened inside dining so I figured the cold blasts of air wouldn’t be so bad after a cocktail or two. We placed our drink, appetizer and entree orders all at once while making sure to speak loudly and point out the items on the menu. My drink arrived and was not correct, but it tasted nice so I shrugged and just went with it. However, the appetizer came out and was also incorrect and this is where things go downhill. I told the waiter who brought out the food that I had ordered the Greek salad and not the beets so he took away the plate and notified our waitress. Now I realize that Greek and beet sound similar so it was understandable but my server was visibly annoyed about the mixup and clearly annoyed with me. She avoided our table unless absolutely necessary for the rest of the meal. Now the table seating was only for 1hr15mins which isn’t really enough time for a three course fine dining meal. This became an issue while we were ordering dessert and the people who were supposed to be seated at our table after us walked in the restaurant. I ordered profiteroles for dessert who’s components are all made ahead and should take 5-10 mins to plate and serve. After waiting 25 mins my waitress came over in a huff and said that the dessert should be out soon and that it was on the house since it was taking so long. During this entire time the hostess was visibly freaking out since this couple had a reservation and there were no open tables since our dessert had not materialized. We even had to ask the busser to cash us out since our waitress once again was nowhere to be found. None of the issues weren’t my fault yet I was made to feel like a complete inconvenience.
Outstanding food in a hip environment, both indoors and out. First-time guests should be prepared for fairly steep prices.
Our table was not ready for some time. Portions are a bit small. Otherwise excellent.
My boyfriend & I went to celebrate our anniversary and had the most perfect meal, from the appetizer to the dessert.
Always so accommodating and nice to our toddler! One of our favorites for food and service!
very expensive for what you get ($240 for 2 drinks, 2 mains and a shared app) ... service was really bad.. they were doing side jobs and and closing up around us ... had to wave down the waitress a few times for a 2nd drink, to order desserts and to get NAPKNS???
Beautiful setting; however, the food was mediocre. Small portion sizes with sky high prices. Server was very sweet, but very slow especially considering there were very few tables seated while we were there. Perhaps I have high expectations for Barbara Lynch, but I was disappointed.
Food is delicious. However, the service wasn't great. We went for our 10th anniversary and were hoping for a special night out. I sat for over half of my meal with an empty drink and we weren't offered dessert until our bill had already been dropped off.
Fantastic food and wine. Love the atmosphere and the open-air setting when the weather is nice. Great location in the heart of the South End. We had the gnocchi and the short rib as our entrees - both were great! Highly recommend!
Delicious food, they were too busy and not enough staff, but this did not take away from the great evening and tasty food we had for dinner.
Pretty bad service. They were also out of many things on their menu.
A quintessential neighborhood date night, The Butcher Shop encompasses the best of the South End!! Fantastic food, wonderful service and a perfect ambiance striking the blend between lively, yet relaxed. We enjoyed their well-crafted cocktails (classic martini & palmyra), beet salad, gnocchi and short ribs. They offer a great wine list as well. We will definitely be back soon!
We had to wait for our table and there was no place to wait. The food was ok - the menu was very limited. Definitely not nearly as good as it was when I last went a few years ago.
Barbara Lynch does it again! Steak frites 11/10, perfectly made. Drinks, wine, dessert... delicious! One of the best spots in the South End by far. Will be back!
Fries came out rock hard.
Fantastic ambiance and great wine selection. The food was delicious, although there were a few dishes that I felt were not worth the price point. I have to say, our waitress was also very rude and not friendly. She gave off really bad energy.
Food is phenomenal, great value. Do yourself a favor, stop what you are doing and go there now.
Spring is here and outdoor dining in Boston has been rejuvenated by the pandemic. Fancy decks have been built and streets blocked off to accommodate dining. In the heart of the South End, Boston’s most beautiful neighborhood, The Butcher Shop is an icon. This is what a modern local bistro is supposed to be. A tightly focused menu mixing classics with modern. A sharp wine list, proving quality does not need to be expensive. Friendly staff that actually seem to be enjoying their jobs.
I often have the burger, because it is so simple and good. Instead, I tried the Chicken Cordon Bleu special this time. So tasty and so comforting. The creamy lentils that accompanied it may have been the best preparation of lentils (I can usually take them or leave them) I have ever had. Accompanied by a glass of white Burgundy, this was a classic comfort dinner.
My pregnant wife had the steak frites. Well done. Not a choice I (or I suspect the chef) would make, but required. Amazingly, it tasted pretty good. Quality shines.
Support local and support the neighborhood by visiting The Butcher Shop.
Delicious! Outdoor dining was wonderful as well and tables were far apart.
Used to be a really amazing restaurant with great steaks and other really good cuts of meats with incredible service
Now you sit a park bench like table and have an over priced “burger” that would be called a slider anywhere else with no option for anything better
Wish I had gone somewhere else
It is early days as restaurants begin to reopen, but The Butcher Shop has some work to do. The service was spotty, the music was loud, the food was tasty but arrived lukewarm. And it was quite expensive. At 9:45, they asked us to leave as they had another party coming in, despite closing at 10 pm.
Delicious dinner and excellent service! Highly recommend!
Incredible food and dining experience. One of my favorites.
This is a lovely neighborhood spot in Boston's South End, great ambience. Service was outstanding and cocktails are creative and fun. The food was just ok, the beet appetizer was delicious. The steak frites were just ok, the meat was very tough and difficult to cut into and chew.
