The Butcher Shop
Inspired by the travels of Chef Barbra Lynch's travels throughout Europe, The Butcher Shop celebrates all that the old world boucheries of Europe had to offer. A combination of a full-service butcher shop and a wine bar, The Butcher Shop offers menus that both represent and celebrate Italian and French cuisine. While lunch and dinner specials change on a daily basis, some of the most well-known and loved dishes include terrines, steaks, antipasti and a selection of pasta.

The food was very tasty (I had the brunch burger), but it was completely empty around 1pm on a Saturday, which was a strange feeling
A great spot in the south end with consistently great food and wine. The steak and venison were awesome. I personally enjoyed a pasta dish with luck meatballs.
Can’t wait to go back.
We had a lovely experience here. Our server Dana was absolutely terrific and shared why they carry so many vermouths. The food was well prepared and very tasty.
This is a very small place, mainly with tall stools and small tables. However, the service is especially friendly, and the food is innovative and delicious! Cannot recommend the food or service; not a quiet or romantic evening, but great food.
Service & food here are so consistently GREAT! No fuss. Nice wine selection. If you like the low hum
So disappointed! We split a $75 steak and couldn’t figure out at first whether the steak was tough or something was wrong with the knives. The steak had way too much grizzle Abd although tasty enough, not awesome. For $75, that steak should have been awesome. For that reason, we would never go back. The steak houses do a much better job. It’s too bad as the atmosphere is inviting and the place is cozy. We compared notes with someone who had been previously and he said the same. Spinch salad was very good; Pate was very good. Wines good but super expensive and not worthy of the price. We go to expensive places and so the price per se is not the issue, but when Foid/wine is expensive. It better be more than OK. Overall not a good experience!
A definite great find. It's small, so you best have reservations. But food is spectacular and service is great. A bit pricey, like a steakhouse, but by far ranks right up there with the best steakhouses in Boston without the haughtiness.
We have been here twice. The first visit was ok, the second visit confirmed to us this place is not worth the trip or money.
1) For a meat speciality place their meat dishes are just mediocre at best. We've tried the tomahawk steak, duck breast, and sausages and they were just ok.
2) Their plating is terrible. I had an entree that came on an half empty plate. It looked like it was missing food and was not aesthetically pleasing!
3) The service is also very slow. We arrived at the restaurant at 4:30pm for a super early dinner. We ordered our entrees, no appetizers, at about 4:45pm. Our food didn't come till almost an hour later! There were other dinners but the restaurant was not packed at that time. I can't think of a rational reason why the food took so long to arrive.
Overall a disappointing experience.
Excellent food! The mushrooms were outstanding. Knowledgeable wine staff.
We were celebrating our anniversary. We tried an aged steak, and it was magnificent! The appetizers and sides were also good. They have a good list of wines by the glass, as well as cocktails. Since it was a special day, we were given champagne and a tasty dessert of chocolate mousse and popcorn ice cream with caramel sauce. We'll proportioned and delicious. We sat at the bar. The bartender/waiter was great at answering all our questions. Overall, a wonderful night
Overall great place with own personality and very cozy.
Only criticism is that drinks were not well done, very watery.
Met a friend at the bar and drank a delicious burgundy. Spinach salad dressing was perfectly balanced, sweet Italian sausage perfumed with fennel was a revelation. Pate plate was exceptional. Can’t wait to go back.
Go for the steak! It is absolutely delicious. It's a small restaurant, definitely recommend reservations.
We reserved a table but were given the choice of sitting in the doorway or sitting at the bar. I don’t like eating at the bar so I was disappointed.
This restaurant is overrated and overpriced. The space is small and cramped. No full liquor license. Staff is pleasant and helpful.
Service was a bit disappointing. Food was good, but duck breast wasn’t hot. Also coconut cake tasted a bit stale.
For a tiny place, they knock thus menu out of the park. Superb food and excellent service.
Food was so amazing! Grilled quail, venison entree, and pork entree were AMAZING!
Dana was also so wonderful!
Thanks for SUCH an amazing experience and night!
Very comfortable, genuine place, with great food and an ambience that includes not being too loud
Highly recommended. Really interesting and delicious food. Will return when next in Boston.
We just returned from The Butcher Shop Restaurant. The spinach salad was unremarkable..mushy veggies and flavorless dressing. The Pork was tasty, but had so much fat on it that half of it was was not edible.
The best part of the dinner was the friendly bartender. I would not recommend this restaurant because the food was unremarkable.
We love this tiny restaurant with fantastic food and wine and warm, generous staff. We went for our 35th anniversary.
Overcooked meat at first. Initially wrong refill of wine (complementary to make up for overcooked steak). Both corrected
I returned after a "few years" away as my prior two or three experiences were average. What a wonderful and unexpected surprise! The food was excellent, the service very good and the wine list good. Nice - will be back again soon.
As a foodie, I can't believe this was my first visit to The Butcher Shop. Especially when it is so convenient to the Calderwood Theater! Had a pre-theater dinner with friends and enjoyed everything. The wine list was incomprehensible but the staff steered me to something I liked. We thoroughly enjoyed all the food we got: burrata appetizer, mezzeluna (ravioli) with pumpkin, pasta bolognese (my favorite - delicious flavor) and the chicken rolled up and cooked with something yummy inside that they conveniently cut into three pieces for us to share. I will go back! It was very good.
Space was very crammed. Servers were attentive, duck breast was delicious but maybe a bit dry. Overall good dining experience.
We arrived on time for our reservation and were not seated until 45minutes later. This is not a restaurant that has standing/waiting room therefore we awkwardly shuffled around staff as they served other patrons. One of the people I was dining with ordered a certain beer and was told they were out of it; roughly 1 hour later we saw a staff member serve two people this said beer. We have dined here before and had a lovely experience leading us to return here for a birthday celebration therefore, this experience was very disappointing.
Overall great experience server was condescending felt profiled
We sat at the bar and the bartender was awesome!! We had a fabulous dinner!!
One of our favorites in the South End. Very cozy in the winter - good German wine options and always love the filet mignon.
We had been meaning to try this for a long time and it was worth it! The food was really amazing and our server was very sweet. It's pricey, we knew it would be, but... definitely pricey. The seating is a little tight, don't plan to discuss anything terribly private, but it's set up in a way that doesn't feel intrusive unless folks are talking too loud right behind you. All in all we were glad we went and will go back, but probably just for special occasions.
The prime ribeye is the best steak I have had in Boston, the staff is great and the ambience is just lovely. Still too pricey, though.
Found this Listed as a wine bar, but really a small menu restaurant. They Seem to enjoy slow, personal service - but we were frequently looking for Waiter to ask or order something. Yes, pricey but just not worth it.
Based on recommendations, we made a reservation at the Butcher Shop for burger and beer night. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on our dining experience other than to say we waited approximately 10 minutes before deciding to leave the restaurant because we were abandoned by the wait staff despite several, albeit unsuccessful, efforts at hand waving. Even though we did not dine at the Butcher Shop, Open Table requires a rating for the food, hence the good rating which may or may not be accurate. Try the burgers at Gallows on Washington Street.
Sat three of us at a table that is for two people. Ordered steaks and asked if we need a lat cartel for side dishes. She said yes so we ordered a bunch only to find the meal came with two sides. Then food came and there was not enough room to put everything in table as it was a table for two. Every question we asked, she always pointed to most expensive option. When bill came she came over and kept hovering waiting for us to pay check and my client just got his coffee. We finally said screw it let’s just pay and go somewhere else.
The 16 oz Prime Dry Aged NY Strip was not great but pricey! Little disappointed. Service and wine list was excellent!
Frankly disappointed, I've been several times in the past and on this occasion thought it lacking
Great food, great wine, great service!
Everything was perfect. They may have the best steaks in town with s wine list to match. The service staff are very well trained and knowledgeable.
Unfortunately the large group at the table next to us became increasingly loud with their liquor consumption. Not the restaurant’s fault, but made our dinner slightly less pleasant than normal.
I thought that the sirloin steak was tough. My dinner guests liked their burger but thought the hot dog was mediocre.
The service was not very good, but, it was Dine Out week and very busy. So, I won’t hold that against you.
Have eaten there before and loved it.
