Inspired by the travels of Chef Barbra Lynch's travels throughout Europe, The Butcher Shop celebrates all that the old world boucheries of Europe had to offer. A combination of a full-service butcher shop and a wine bar, The Butcher Shop offers menus that both represent and celebrate Italian and French cuisine. While lunch and dinner specials change on a daily basis, some of the most well-known and loved dishes include terrines, steaks, antipasti and a selection of pasta.
Celebrating a special event at The Butcher Shop is a fun and unique way to wow your guests . We are happy to accommodate either lunch or dinner events. Our dining room is ideally suited for reception-style events but different formats are available to suit your groups style and taste.View Private Dining Details

A few friends and I went for Restaurant Week - two of us got the RW menu and the other two did not. Both RW orders started with the Salumi Board and ended with the profiteroles- both very underwhelming. One RW order got the sirloin which was delicious and a good portion. The other was the sausage plate which was a lot of meat but no sides which was a bit odd. We also ordered the cheese plate, lamb and Brussels for the table. Cheese plate was pretty blah - go across the street to Barcelona if you want some food cheese. Brussels were yummy but nothing special. Lamb was good but, in my opinion, not worth it for $48. If I had ordered that as my main course I would have been fairly disappointed.
Ambiance was nice, cocktails were fine (cocktail menu was good but the results were just okay) and service was good. Not sure I’d go back.
Drinks are reasonable. Portions are decent, but run small on some items. Sirloin was not as good as expected. Beet salad was delicious.
Great steak. Interesting sides. Liked the entire experience except the staff.
nice surprise find and the food it good!
I enjoyed the meat selection there. They have very good honey for the bread too
The Butcher Shop never disappoints. There is something exquisite about a Saturday afternoon lunch spent there sitting at the bar. The wine choices are excellent, the food choices always seem just right. It feels as if everything is carefully chosen and prepared without being fussy in the least. The dishes are ones you know yet somehow different and better than you have had before. Highly recommend their charcuterie of course but also the veal tonnato. A real treat.
Fantastic. Service and food were both fresh and enjoyable.
Beautiful interior, delightful service and food prepared with care and attention to detail. Great place.
We had long thought to visit this restaurant so we did. We had high expectations as the restaurants name drives standards for real good meet. We were disappointed to the quality of food. This is not meet lovers standard. Sausage board was just not good enough. We eaten much better in restaurants around Boston, Brookline and Waltham offering good selection of meats on boards and other small plates.
Very good meal, nice wine selection—- the appetizers were amazing as was the duck, my 16 oz dry aged sirloin was over cooked— asked for medium rare def got medium or better. Normally that is not something I fret about but at $75 a steak it should be perfect. We will return as any kitchen can miss one meal — everyone else’s was perfect and the service was very friendly. A bit cramped at the tables but that’s part of the space.
Great, intimate atmosphere. Casual but special. Super friendly service - great passion and knowledge about the wine and food. Amazing old world wine selection and delicious food. We had a great time and will definitely go back!
The food was good. The service was... meh. Out with my teenage son for a rare father son dinner. It was a brisk 35 degrees out and they sat us next to the door. When I say next to the door, I mean so close that I could reach out and close it every time the cold wind blew it open - which was often. So we ate with our coats on. Not a big deal but would have been nice if the wait staff at least acknowledge the situation. Maybe a “sorry about the breeze” or “is this table okay - would you like to wait for another to open”. Frankly any contact other than the zero times someone stopped by the table in the one hour it took to order and get food. Lots of love though when the check came - nothing in the way of thanks for pushing the door closed and keeping the other diners cozy. How about desert or coffee. No,more like, oh your done, here is the check. Are you guys from here etc. You know, the standard subliminal tip bait connecting you get at much cheaper joints. Any way, good food but didn’t plot well on the expense to enjoyment curve. Maybe surely and aloof with a touch of frostbite is their thing.
Food is outstanding. Worth a splurge when we can do so. Pasta bolognese is fabulous (small bowl of it, but SO delicious, and I'll take smaller but better anytime!) and the duck was salty good. Steak tartare is not to be missed! And what a fun atmosphere. This is one of my favorite spots in Boston.
Great food and pate and terrine. Have the dessert as well.
Awesome restaurant. The people are so friendly. The food is terrific --- this is now my favorite restaurant in Boston!
I enjoyed this small quaint experience. The waitress was very helpful in guiding us on the menu.
Great food and wine. Sausage board is heavenly. Will be back.
Odd seating distribution but excellent meat and friendly service
Having heard Barbara Lynch's reputation we were most eager to visit The Butcher with family. The very small space is jammed with tables that should be two tops set for 4. The 4 of us could not have a bread plate and entre plate with a wine glass on the table at once. We had to put water glasses on the window ledge. The food was fine but not unusual or outstanding. The wait staff worked well through the tight spaces and were friendly. All in all we were disappointed. Having said all that we had a great time one afternoon at her B&G Oysters across the street and would go there again.
Truly amazing place with outstanding food and welcoming staff. Perfect for a date or a night with close friends.
The Butcher Shop was a great spot for delicious food and cocktails. Great charcuterie selection to start the dinner, amazing entrees, and fun cocktails. Ambiance was inviting and cozy. Would recommend for a nice date or special occassion. Smaller place, so best for small groups.
Funky, charming in its eclectic ambiance. Steak to die for!! Such a great place before running over to the Calderwood theater!
We had a great time at Butcher Shop. I'd been before but I made sure to make a reservation this time because there's usually a line and the restaurant is small. Awesome bolognese and lamb dishes and solid Belgian beer selections. Everything's fresh and the wait staff is friendly and very thorough. Definitely recommend.
Excellent meal! My son and husband had ribeye and filet, which were tender and prepared excellently! I had the burkshire pork, which was equally as delicious! Excellent service! Highly recommend!
Food and wine parings are always spot on. With the winter and all the coats the tables become quite crowded
Terrific place. Great setting, quality food and a great selection of cheeses and wine. Only criticism: coconut cake was dry and fairly tasteless. Other than that, a terrific evening.
Food is awesome. Service is a little snooty.
This is one of my favorite spots to go when in Boston. Food is incredible.
Butcher Shop for a Sunday lunch is terrific. Highly recommend the steak and eggs as well as the burger. Seating is all stool height so not great for elderly or the very young and the restroom is in the basement. However, for a tiny neighborhood shop they sure do know their meat and its delicious.
They never fail to impress... but man the prices are even higher
Always a great spot but value of food is very high versus current markets on related products. The charcuterie platter we ordered only had Mortadella and a Salami and for $26 was expecting more meats and at least a prosciutto or speck. I ordered the 16 oz. dry aged NY Strip which was cooked perfectly but for $75 the current markets don't call for a cut like this to be priced as high. Overall was kinda disappointed since my first visit there was outstanding. I would go again but the South End of Boston does have a lot of restaurants which I want to try so The Butcher Shop may have to wait until I get back there.
I ordered a 48oz aged ribeye medium rare ($175) and it came out pretty much medium well. Called our waitress over and show her the cut. She agreed w us and all she said was so sorry n walk away. I was with business friends so didn’t want to make a stink but unacceptable! Didn’t even make an effort to render the issue.
Very good and very nice.
This was my first time dining at the Butcher Shop and I can guarantee it won't be my last! The ambiance inside the restaurant is cozy with soft lighting perfect for a special occasion. The small size of the restaurant is also creates an intimate setting for a date as well.
Although, some options on the menu many be pricier, it is well worth the added cost. I had one of the best sirloin steaks in my life that was cooked to perfection! I would also recommend a cheese platter as it was the perfect appetizer.
Our waiter, Matt, was super knowledgeable about the menu and provided excellent suggestions when asked for recommendations. He made the entire dining experience more enjoyable and I will surely be back again!
This was pretty good food I've ever had, paired with one of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had. The restaurant apparently "lost" a reservation that was made three weeks prior, and confirmed via telephone the day of. They managed to squeeze us in, but that soured the entire experience. I would certainly not recommend this restaurant.
The charcuterie board we ordered (sm meat + sm cheese) was fantastic! The entrees, however, came out cold. After we sat there for a good 10+ minutes waiting for someone to notice that we were clearly unhappy, one of our neighbors went towards the back and found a waitress (because they also hasn't seen their waitress in a while) and asked her to stop by our table. They reheated my roasted duck and recreated my date's short rib dish. The 2nd time the food came out great.
For our troubles, they apologized and comped us an amount similar to what our drinks cost, so the way they handled it wasn't bad. I would cautiously try it again.
Very tasty lunch with quality service. Will return next time I visit Boston.
Friendliest wait staff ever! I haven't had such great conversation with people at a restaurant ever. And THE BEST STEAK OF MY LIFE.
Great food, but pricey even for a business dinner.
Relaxed atmosphere. Superb food and wine, attentive staff.
The food was delicious, my steak was well seasoned and cooked perfectly to temperature. However the restaurant doesn't have a liquor license, only beer wine and cordials. I have a big problem paying $60 for a steak and not being able to have my drink of choice (dirty martini) with it! That was a big let down
