The Bull Valley Roadhouse serves American roadhouse food prepared from scratch with century-old techniques using fresh ingredients from our favorite small farms. A beacon at the end of a canyon road in the historic dock town of Port Costa, the roadhouse welcomes locals, travelers and adventurous day-trippers alike in its 1897 landmark dining room and bar. Stepping into the saloon-like rooms, guests can sense more than 100 years of hospitality. We were celebrating our 23rd wedding anniversary and were excited to try this restaurant. It has great atmosphere, the drinks are delish, and the food is amazing. I’m not sure what went wrong. We had 6:30 reservations and arrived 10 minutes early. We waited until 6:50 to be seated. We were seated in the garden area. The seats were uncomfortable, but the room is delightful. We placed our order. The salad arrived in a timely manner. The dinner seem to take forever. When it finally arrived it was cold. They replaced our order, but our waiter went from OK to a jerk. The manager was very kind and she treated us well. They ended up comping our whole meal and drinks. I still don’t know if I want to go back. It was not a fun evening for something that should’ve been amazing experience.

This is my fourth time here. I find this place extremely charming! The only reason that I gave it a four instead of a five on the food, is because the BrocoIllini was very salty. In terms of the value, this place is pretty pricey, which is why we reserve it for a special occasion. Overall, it is definitely worth it!

Could not have been more pleased. Front staff worked with us to add one to our party. Immediately seated at our reservation time. Wait staff thoughtfully guided us through the menu with family style eating advice. Food was absolutely delicious. We were seated in a back room that was quieter than the main room (much appreciated). I've recommended this place to several folks since we ate there (our first time). #simplycharming

Food was fantastic. Service a little slow at times. Parking is a real challenge. Parking lot is an absolute disaster. Needs to be graded. Biggest potholes I have ever seen. Really need a 4 WD SUV. But the restaurant is great.

The four shared several yummy dishes. Chicken and waffles, corned beef hash, wedge salad, creamed greens, asparagus, biscuits and gravy. All were delicious. My bloody Maria was the smallest drink like that I’ve ever had although it was tasty. Our server, Jeff, was great.

It was our first time there. The food and service were exceptional the only negative was the parking lot. Potholes everywhere and by the time we left the restaurant it was around 9pm...the parking lot was pitch dark with no lights and seemed a bit scary.

This was our sixth meal there and it was, as always, delightful at every level. This is one of those gems...worth the amazingly beautiful drive (and it is a bit of a drive). Bull Valley serves food worthy of a Michelin star (if Michelin would lighten up a bit on settings). Port Costa is set in a time warp of 1920, even earlier and enlivens the experience. Aside from the food...its the service that rocks that place!

Second time here and this time with out the kids. Port Costa seems like a strange location for a restaurant of this caliber, but it fits perfectly with the rest of the tiny town. The cocktails are great, a throwback to old recipes and expertly made at the bar. Food is incredible. We started with the tempura crusted asparagus which was served lying on a spread of goddess sauce. Our main entree was the ribeye, cooked to perfection and we ordered a side of the macaroni gratin to go along with. Everything was incredible and plenty for the wife and I, though we splurged on the Chocolate Pot de Creme to finish our meal off. Service is top notch and the rustic ambiance provides a great dining experience.

Been wanting to go there for 5 yrs. and finally made it. It was everything we'd been told. Food (large portions, be warned) was fantastic....squishy super sour dough, halibut ceviche big chunks of fish, steak with herbed butter and asparagus all excellent. Olive oil cake dessert moist and not too sweet. Service is teamwork protocol and everyone was great. Atmosphere....well, this place is thick and rich with it. Go already.

Very cool place, like a reverse speak-easy. Pre-prohibition era cocktails are fantastic. Food is fresh, locally sourced, delicious and very well presented.

This place is worth the drive! Nestled in the hills between Martinez and Crockett is Port Costa. Literally a 1 road town. Drive to the end and you have a place that has been locked in time 1879 to be exact. There are 2 restaurants with Bars., an old brothel (not a hotel open on weekends) and a few little shops. Bully Valley has been here 5 years now. We've gone twice. The food is served family style and is amazing! Although, because it's family style and can get quite expensive, I think the portions should be a little bigger. The flavors are to die for! The risotto is super complex, the pork is simply cooked to perfection, the potatoes melt in your mouth. I know i keep saying it but it can get expensive, especially when you get the homemade drinks, Elder-flower Spritzer WHAT!! Rosemary Lemonade WHAT WHAT!! Lime Coulie DEAD! You have to have more than one and they add up! Perfect for date nights, Special Occasions.
Side note: the little town is getting a little hipster thanks to yelp, but it doesn't deter me.

Went for my GF's son's birthday which was a surprise for him. We had been there before so this was our second time. Everything was amazing, from the pre-dinner cocktails, apps, and main entrees which our shareable. We finished the night with dessert and an aperitif. Service was great, just a little slow on water refills and wine service. I highly recommend this restaurant for all occasions. Great place for company dinners!

This is such a special restaurant in a special little town. The food, presentation, service, and ambience were all perfect for a date night with my husband. I would definitely come back for even a casual dinner, or drinks, or brunch. It's just a real gem of a place.

We were seated on time. We had Sunday brunch. Our meals (3) were cooked to perfection. And the service was perfectly attentive. It's priced high, but it won't disappoint.

Outstanding, one of a kind spot. Delicious food, friendly service, fantastic ambiance. Get the mushroom toast! Get the chilaquiles! The cinnamon roll was unbelievable... So much to love... we can't wait to go back.

I was stunned at the bill for 4 people. Great all around, but not a place I can afford anytime soon, at least not for a full dinner, salad, drinks, etc. Otherwise, wonderful.

A long time favorite spot! The food (and cocktails) were incredible as was the service. The restaurant did a great job of hosting my family for a joint birthday celebration. There are very few places that feel as special as the Bull Valley Road House. Can’t wait until our next visit!

We had seen Bull Valley Roadhouse on a Bay Area Checkplease and it looked intriguing. Our party of four drove there from Fremont for brunch on March 26th. The drive was very lovely since the hills were green. We felt as though we were 300 miles from the Bay Area when we arrived as the hustle and bustle had been left behind. Port Costa is very small and quiet. We were seated on the heated, covered enclosed patio, which is nice since is has lots of natural light. The chairs were a bit flimsy and we asked for a sturdier chair for one of our party. The staff cheerfully provided a different chair. Service was friendly and the staff were well informed about the food. We saw and were occasionally waited on by one of the owners. The food is advertised as being for sharing, and we did that. I was a bit concerned when the chicken came out with two pieces and I was expecting three, but we were able to split it just fine among the three chicken aficionados.
The pork chilaquiles were OUTSTANDING. The best chilaquiles I've ever tasted. The fried tortilla strips remained crisp. The chicken and cheddar waffle were also great - the chicken was nicely fried and tender, the waffle had an excellent cheddar flavor. The mac and cheese was very tasty and attractively browned. We shared two cinnamon rolls between the four of us and they were very good and fresh. They have quite a few interesting cocktails and I had the difficult to find (in the Bay Area) hot buttered rum - very good. One of our party had the less spicy version of their Bloody Mary (have forgotten the name of it) and it was still pretty spicy. But good.
We are anxious to return!

The Bull Valley Road House has been on my radar screen for several years, mostly due to the many great reviews and the menu I looked at online. It seemed like a first-class steak/chop house and we live not far away.

We finally got there last night. At my insistence. And, we were greatly disappointed. We cannot fathom why there are so many great reviews here on OpenTable and elsewhere. Don’t believe them!

It was incredibly crowded and the "table" we had to sit cheek to jowl with a hundred or so other folks. The noise level was deafening. The loudest we've ever heard in a dining establishment. I could not carry on a conversation with my wife across the table maybe three feet away.
We almost walked out right after we were seated due to the seating arrangement and the ridiculously loudness. But, I wanted to try the food since we were there.

When the limited "family style" menu was presented, where even bread is a $4 a la carte item, I realized it probably was going to be a bad experience. And from the not-anything-special $13 warm cocktail I was served, to the short poured wine, to the oily macaroni and cheese add on item to the 3 oz piece of salmon from the "large plate" share menu, it just went down-hill. I did like the Caesar salad because it had lots of cheese and interesting, hard croutons.

We left without any dessert or coffee. We were afraid we'd be aggravated if that turned out like everything else.

Our local Black Angus is a much more pleasant dining experience with a larger menu selection, better food and beverage.
Everything you read on the low rated reviews here is absolutely true. No need for me to rehash.
I know that restaurant likes and dislikes are very personal and maybe we're just old fashioned in that, when we visit an establishment such as Bull Valley claims to be, we expect much, much more in atmosphere, quality of food and drink and service.

This is my first poor review on OpenTable and, it isn't pleasant. :-(

Checked in @ the Burlington Hotel @ about 4.20 p.m. I only wish you could check-in a little earlier 3 p.m. would be ideal. After the drive from the Peninsula would have been nice to be able to drop our stuff in the hotel & freshen up. As it was we had a late lunch @ Warehouse Cafe & took a walk up Canyon Lake Dr and over the rr tracks (yes, my grandson is adventurous!) until check-in. Dinner after another hike up Canyon Lake Dr to see the view this time. NY steak was excellent, mac au gratin was fabulous, large pot de crème was more like a small? We only wonder what the small was like! Maybe bec it was so delicious it seemed small? My young date had a root beer and we bought some choc chip cookies to go. Pound cake, cornbread and hot chocs in the a.m. gratis were phenomenal. Bought a slice of pound cake to go from the Owner! Perfect warmed up for the next a.m. with my Peet's. Memories of a perfect birthday weekend with my sweet grandson.

One of our favorite dining experiences. A casual and fancy with amazing food. Wonderful drinks. The ribeye was one of the best I’ve ever had. We dream of going back soon. Feel free to wear jeans or a suit. It’s just a perfect place.

If you would like to "get away from it all" take a leisurely drive along a ridge line along
the Carquinez Straits to reach Bull Valley Roadhouse. You will not be disappointed. The building which houses the restaurant dates back to a bygone era when Port Costa was a bustling train ferry town. The old hotel which houses the restaurant goes back to the 1800's. The food here is basically comfort food but it is all prepared with fresh ingredients and to die for. The fried chicken and biscuits can't be beat. Get them with a side of mashed potatoes or the mac-cheese.
There have a lively bar scene as well but it is separated from the main dining area so the noise level is moderate. The prices are fair for what you get which are huge portions. These meals are meant to be shared and I would suggest you do so unless you are famished. We also had the wedge salad and the dressing was fantastic. Try this restaurant. You will not be disappointed.
Parking along the street or in a dirt covered parking area by the water.
