The Bull Valley Roadhouse
The Bull Valley Roadhouse serves American roadhouse food prepared from scratch with century-old techniques using fresh ingredients from our favorite small farms. A beacon at the end of a canyon road in the historic dock town of Port Costa, the roadhouse welcomes locals, travelers and adventurous day-trippers alike in its 1897 landmark dining room and bar. Stepping into the saloon-like rooms, guests can sense more than 100 years of hospitality. The proprietors strive to maintain that warm tradition and leave everyone feeling relaxed, well fed and eager to return. Look for us under the golden bull.
Sunday brunch served from 10:30 am through 2:00 pm.
Great as always!!! The gin tonic with the botanicals was delicious
BVR continues to exceed all expectations. What a spectacular evening of dining with close friends. Everything about BVR: the ambiance, the food, the service is first rate. From the time you enter the front door you are made to feel welcome. “Sit down and enjoy everything we offer.”
With six, we were able to sample a variety of first course choices. The two that were most memorable were the Ceviche and the Tomales Bay Mussels. Two days later, I still salivate at the memory of the broth the mussels were steamed in. (Order lots of their wonderful sour dough bread to sop up the juices).
The dish to share that was the most memorable was the Smoked Pork Chip. It was richly flavored, fork tender; served over a bed of greens and a variety of beans.
The only entre I would pass on is the Fried Chicken. It was nothing memorable, I’ve had better elsewhere (try Revel - Danville).
We’ll return to BVR again and again
Went for Sunday brunch 7/14/19 & asked for a table on the patio. No problem, especially if you’re willing to dine family style. H20 came right away. The server came to take our drink order shortly thereafter. When I asked about an ingredient on their “specialty cocktail” menu he didn’t know what it was. When I asked that my drink not include egg white the server came back 5 MINUTES LATER to tell me that the bartender wouldn’t make my drink that way because it “spoiled the integrity of the drink”. Really? When did bartenders start telling you what you could & could not have? Meanwhile, the drink my guest ordered still hadn’t shown up. The server went to get the owner to explain the drink drama to me because he didn’t get it either. We placed our meal order. One item was toast. Plain toast. His food came but mine didn’t show up for another 10 minutes! So his sat & got cold. The toast never came at all. The owner came to our table & again told me that the bartender wouldn’t make the drink without the egg white. I told him I knew every ingredient in the drink & was confident the drink would be fine. He told me “then the drink would be a Beachcomber”. I said that’s fine, bring me a Beachcomber. He refused. Outright refused. He was supercilious & his tone was snide & condescending. I was speechless. I ordered some other drink. What I should’ve done was gotten up & left right then. The entire experience was an utter disaster that ruined our day. We were still maD the next day. I’ve gone to the BV many times, spent LOTS of $$, but only on Tuesday or Wednesday nights. For good reason. I never go there on the weekends. Sit at the bar. You get the best service there. There ARE some great people working there. The owner is a horror though. Now I’ll never go there again. If you’ve gotten this far in my review here’s 2 more things. The owner KNOWS I’m a patron. The waiters don’t get to keep their tips so don’t bother tipping them cash. It goes to the house i.e. the owner.
This is one of my favorite spots in the Bay Area for brunch or dinner. Cannot beat the location; quaint and historical.
Excellent food and service. Very fresh and the service was very good. Fun drinks as well.
Funky place in a unique location. Good food and drink. Good service. Closely packed tables and too loud. We were at a tiny table for two and I could barely hear my partner.
Our server was slow but the food made up for it! We were not in a hurry anyway.
Coming to the Bull Valley Roadhouse is a Treat for my husband and myself. You see my husband is the Wine and Beer snob and I am the Locavore Snob! We both must know the origins of what we drink and eat. Another prerequisite snd essential to complete Joy for us is to be transported to another time and place with excellent service mixed in. The Roadhouse supplies all of this in spades. Our server, “ Charlie” knew exactly our every need and treated us like royalty. Impeccable service combined with just not incredible but remarkable food made our “Date Night” perfection.
Well worth the windy drive to get there. Excellent fried chicken, generous portions.
I celebrated my birthday here with a group of 10. Sometimes its difficult for a restaurant to handle a larger group but not this one. They made my extra special with a custom menu and all of the food was absolutely delicious!!!
This was our second visit and it was even better this time around! Samuel, the owner, was outstanding, attentive, and even accommodated a "special request" of ours. The service was impeccable and the food was wonderful. I think I am hooked on the fried chicken!
The entrees are,to share, so if you are eating alone be advised. That being said the pork stew is a hearty and heavy meal. Sooo good tho. Drinks on Tiki Thursday are fun with custom mugs. Service is attentive without being over bearing. I would recommend this place just for the drive out to Port Costa. It’s beautiful.
Wonderful! Everything was absolutely fantastic! Highly recommend
Yes, we have already recommended this restaurant to some friends. This food is so good I can hardly wait to get back. We love the people, place and food! The fried green tomatoes were excellent! And that steak...so so good! Our server/servers were so good and friendly. Love everything about this place. Don't let the building fool you. You will not be disappointed!
We were looking forward to our visit to Bull Valley. We started with a good appetizer of muscles. We placed our order. We received 2 of the 3 dinners ordered in a reasonable amount of time. We hesitated to begin eating, we wanted to wait for the third meal to come, but we were assured the third meal would arrive shortly. During this time the waiter began to pour additional wine into our glasses. Somehow he knocked over my wife's glass of wine. He apologized and said he would bring another glass. He then saw that we brought a bottle of wine and therefore he did not bother to bring another glass of wine or offer any other type of reimbursement or compensation. We were nearly finished eating when the third meal arrived. It looked nice and the aroma was good, however it was more than half fat and unable to be eaten! We were very disappointed with the service and lack of consideration by the staff. We have no desire to return to your restaurant.
The service was excellent! The staff was friendly and informative. Our appetizer and side dishes were good but the pork was very salty, and I love salt. The kitchen messed up our order and the staff went above and beyond to make up for it.
Great service and food for the most part. We ordered some toast and it was burnt black. The rest was good!!
This place never disappoints, the food is absolutely incredible and the waiters are always on top of it!
The Bull Valley Roadhouse has become the go to place for our annual birthday bash. This year we celebrated our combined 133 birthday celebration with our wives and had a wonderful time. While Port Costa may seem off the beaten path, it's worth the drive.
This is our favorite restaurant ever. The food is excellent, the drinks spectacular, and the service stellar. It tends to be a bit pricy, so we go primarily for special occasions. But every bite, every sip, is well worth the price.
We received very poor and slow service.
The food was an hour late and overpriced.
Although the ambiance is nice I would not go back or recommend this restaurant.
Best food in Contra Costa County.
The service was fine but they kept taking our heated towels away.
I really wanted to love this place... Port Costa is a sweet place. The food seemed fresh and well prepared, however it was so salty I couldn’t taste it. I was so hungry from the hike from Crockett that I ate some of it but it made me ill afterwards. I couldn’t drink enough water... ugh. Total bummer. When I told our server he kind of shrugged it off. I thought he might come back with some kind of apology, like your glass of wine is on the house or something. But he didn’t. Maybe it was just an off night, but I won’t be back.
Second trip to BVR and it’s still good as ever. Had the mixed lettuce salad and the pork stew. Both very good. If you get the stew make sure you get the bread and butter too. Delicious on its own. Parking can be a challenge in Port Costa so give yourself plenty of time.
The food was amazing! Everything is served family style, so the whole group can share all the dishes. I recommend the Mussels as an appetizer and the Fried Chicken as one of the main dishes.
The vibe is cute, old-time saloon with farm table seating mixed with private tables. Small and darkish but really charming. Pretty casual place. Everything we ordered was delicious including our old timey cocktails. I will be back. Just have a designated driver because getting there on the one road into town is a little long and it's very narrow, winding road.
Great food, service, mussels were fantastic as was the fried chicken, so much had to take home most of it!Great wine and beer selection also👍
This restaurant is outstanding. The food and service is stellar. Love funky Port Costa, and this restaurant fits right in. What a hidden gem.
Unfortunately after the long and busy windy drive to this location we were very disappointed at the Food we received.
The fried chicken was burnt and old quality ( re fried and hard exterior / too salty ) I don’t know if it was re fried in old oil but it came out after we ordered within ten minutes. The exterior was practically inedible while the meat itself was rubbery and stringy. Over cooked and gross to be honest. So we know it was not freshly made. The biscuits and gravy were a let down as well. The biscuits were dry/ half way through hardened and barely edible. This was a special anniversary dinner date night for us. We came out to try this lovely location and support local business. I am sad to say we would never return after what was served to us. We did not say anything at the table because it was literally embarrassing to have been given such yucky food and we just paid as well as gave a tip then we just left. The waitress was gracious however we noticed that our service was not on par with what the surrounding guests were receiving. My husband did not want to say anything because it would not help at that point.
The staff were fabulous, gracious, and kind, especially to my elderly Aunt of 92 years. They quickly assessed the original location of our table was not appropriate, given her issues with ambulation, and immediately reassigned us to a table more accessible. Our glasses were never empty, and our needs were never ignored. The food was amazing, especially that fried chicken! Once the staff found out it was my mother's 84th birthday, they brought her a scoop of ice cream and lit candle! That ice cream was incredible, berry, ginger, and bourbon (I think...?) We will definitely return.
Food great but noise level unbearably loud
Always a great experience!!
Never disappointed. Great food and drinks. We always go on tiki night
We love the relaxed feel of this place and definitely would return. Food is served family style - we all loved the chicken and pork stew! Service was friendly and just on time. Menu is a bit pricey. You won’t be disappointed.
One of the best and most charming restaurants in the Bay Area.
I love this place. Every time we have gone the food has been delicious!!
Our server was so lovely and the food was fantastic to share
I love that every time we have been here they don’t rush the dining experience. The family style makes for a very comfortable time together with family and friends.
