The Bull Valley Roadhouse
The Bull Valley Roadhouse serves American roadhouse food prepared from scratch with century-old techniques using fresh ingredients from our favorite small farms. A beacon at the end of a canyon road in the historic dock town of Port Costa, the roadhouse welcomes locals, travelers and adventurous day-trippers alike in its 1897 landmark dining room and bar. Stepping into the saloon-like rooms, guests can sense more than 100 years of hospitality. The proprietors strive to maintain that warm tradition and leave everyone feeling relaxed, well fed and eager to return. Look for us under the golden bull.
Sunday brunch served from 10:30 am through 2:00 pm.
Am in love with this place! Worth the trip out of the way. The food is incredible. Great drinks, great wine list. Service is on-point. It’s one of my favorite restaurants ever.
We went as a large group--of ten--and we had an amazing time! The food was generous and ridiculously delicious. One thing was better than the next. The service was also excellent. Loved the atmosphere too. It was the perfect evening. Oh--and don't forget the stellar choice of cocktails and wine. I want to go back now...
We love BVR. The food is fantastic, the service is the best we have ever experienced, and consistent over all the years we have been visiting. Unique cocktails perfectly created add to the ambiance of BVR. The building is old, has a ton of character, but is a bit noisy.
Spent some tome at the bar before my date arrived. Attentive and pleasant. He was late and the hostess adjusted my reservations without a problem and gave me my favorite table. I’ve never been disappointed. It’s my fav in the bay!
Wait staff knowledgeable with the menu. Offered great suggestions for wine pairing. Everyone attentive without being too much. Food beyond fabulous and atmosphere was fun. Will definitely be going back
Went for a birthday brunch. Totally enjoyed our cocktails. I had the Bloody Maria. The food was tasty. A wedge salad and then the mussels were my choices. Delicious!
Enjoyed the great atmosphere and ambiance at Bull Valley. Service was attentive and very friendly. All items ordered were delicious and excellently prepared. We will get back soon with more friends
We love this place! Service is generally good, food is also very good! Love the ambiance. My father was visiting from out of town for Thanksgiving and we brought him here as a treat. This time we ordered the pork chop which runs about $45. The waitress mentioned that the chop comes well marbled. Okay, a good cut of meat should be well marbled, but this cut was half fat. That is not marbling. We mentioned it to her and she said that is why she mentioned the well marbled. While the flavor was really good I will definitely warn people that half of their chop is waste. The chicken and mushroom ragu were wonderful.
The Bull Valley Roadhouse has been a favorite destination of ours for years, almost back to its original opening. Located in the tiny hidden time capsule town of Port Costa, it's located in an old Victorian building that has been lovingly preserved and furnished with all kinds of funky Victorian charm, making you feel like you wandered into a saloon circa 1880. If the food and drink were mediocre, it would still be worth visiting just for the decor and ambiance. Happily, the food and drink are anything but mediocre.
Cocktails: If you are a fan of pre-Prohibition cocktails, they have you covered, with a number of now obscure but authentic reconstructions of what people actually drank in bars back in the late 19th-early 20th centuries. Some of these aren't really to modern tastes, but to balance things out, they also offer a long list of their own craft cocktails, many of which are quite good.
Food: Two things characterize their food, 1) family style portions intended to be shared among the table (including their small plates), and 2) nothing on the menu is fancy, exotic, or groundbreaking, but just about everything they make is the best you've ever had of whatever it is, whether it's scalloped potatoes, Brussel sprouts, or crispy fried chicken.
If driving the winding, bumpy road to and from Port Costa in the dark isn't to your taste, consider hitting their Sunday brunch, which is awesome, and the only time of the week when you can order their excellent Mezcal Bloody Mary.
Our reservation was for 4pm. We were left standing outside in the cold an rain until about 4:20pm while they appeared to be finishing up a staff meeting. Not sure why they couldn’t at least let us inside. Otherwise, food and service were great!
Excellent food, fun cocktails and great service!
Awesome place, Brussels sprouts and pork stew are amazing!
Most enjoyable restaurant in the Bay Area. Go early and enjoy a drink at the Warehouse Bar across the street. It is the most enjoyable "dive" bar -- in the highest complementary sense -- and say hello to the 10 foot tall polar bear.
AmaZing meal & evening! Time & time again it becomes my favorite place.... again & again!!! Thank you Bull Valley!!!♥️
We love this restaurant and it's worth traveling from Oakland Hills! We took our friends for their first time and they loved it too. We all drink manhattans and their bar has an amazing selection of bourbon. We had a nice table, the atmosphere is cozy and warm. We started with the mussels which are fantastic and a must followed by the butter leaf salad. We shared the rib eye, pork chop (melt in your mouth) and the salmon (fresh & light), brussel sprouts and scallop potatoes. We didn't have the fried chicken this time, but they are know for it. Overall a wonderful evening.
Absolutely. BVRH never let's us down. The food and service is always top notch.
As the BVR is known for its “shareable plates” I was surprised there wasn’t a little more on them this time! Still one of my all-time favorite places to go though😊
Great staff! Great food! Memorable every time!!
The food was totally different. We ordered the steak as we always do. It was so salty and grissly, that we were shocked. When we questioned the servers, we learned that the prior chef had quit and that there was a new chef. The potatoes au gratin were also terrible this time. Very disappointed.
Love this place, great service and always amazing food. Family style is the way to go. We had a party of 12, we choose 5 entrees and 3 sides and had leftovers.
The amazing ambiance and charm of the restaurant and Port Costa is diminished by the over the top noise levels. My companion was definitely put off by the experience.
Been here many times and loved it. this is the first time service was not good. Busboy was impolite and snarky. Server was overwhelmed. Food and drinks were excellent.
This restaurant is located in Port Costa.. I would bet that very few reading this have ever been there..
Port Costa is a town that has been bypassed by time. Was a thriving port for farm products in the 1800's. Enough of the history..
Four of us went to dinner on a Thurs. The restaurant is open from Thurs. thru Sun. Closed on Mon, Tues, & Wed. Turns out the town is closed down and open only on Fri., Sat., & Sun.
Servings normally feed two diners. We had fried chicken and a pork chop. The pork is cooked rare and is sliced for serving. Had a problem with the pork, it being rare and having 30% of the chop being fat. Must say we were warned about the fat content when ordering. The chicken was outstanding. They served 4 pieces of chicken, enough for two diners.
Service was outstanding.
If you have never been to Port Costa I recommend going after dark. Leaving the modern highway for a dark 2 lane road, wondering if it’s the correct exit. Down a winding road that gets more narrow as you go, riders asking “are we in the right place”? Finally a few normal looking houses go by, ah civilization. Round the last bend and it’s 1879 buildings on both sides of the road.
Drop your passengers here at the gold bull hanging above the door, drive down to the gravel parking area.
Excellent food and great service. 100 year old drink recipes. Period decor. All around great evening.
The wait staff are quick, attentive and got everything right.
The drive back is a bit surreal, leaving 1879 behind for today.
Amazing place look forward to going once or twice a month
We frequent about five times per year and it never disappoints!
Excellent meal at this Roadhouse. The pork stew and clams (substitute for mussels) were to die for. The eccentric, funky decor is so fun. Bull Valley Roadhouse is of a different world and time. Can’t wait to come back!
Highly recommended. Make a reservation in advance. Great place to go with friends. Fun to go to the bar early and watch them make your drinks as it is a cool process to watch depending on what you order. Very different concept being prohibition, which was a nice change. Food is incredible. We had many items and didn’t have one thing that we didn’t enjoy.
Great food! Very busy night for staff.
Always a great time and great dining experience. The food was a bit off this time dining but still good. Fun place. Make reservations ahead!
Everything was great until the end with our service. We were given a undercooked steak so we were done before it came back to the table. It was our friends birthday and we were waiting for dessert menus. However they never came . Being we had kids with us we couldnt wait around. I loved the chicken, the beet salad and the brussel sprouts. Just disappointed that we were ignored towards the end of our dinner. Oh and we paid a 25 dollar corkage fee but we poured our own wine.
Hopefully next time the servers have less tables so they can manage them in a more timely manner.
A very special place. Warm service. Great drinks. Wonderful food. Eclectic ambiance.
A Must experience for any occasion. Scalloped Potatoes were to die for and Fried Chicken perfect as always. The staff is always friendly, calm and fun. No texting on their phones in the corners here LOL.
I'll be back sooner than later
Also the Les Claypool cocktail was awesome
Great Restaurant! The only down side is the road getting there! Be sure someone in the party is the designated driver! As the road is very manageable though it is narrow and winding. Need to be sober.
If the road was better they would have to expand as it would be PACKED every night
I usually love this place but this time we were seated next to a really rowdy table who essentially screamed throughout the entire dinner. Also our order was brought out instantly after we placed it and all at once, leaving the impression that they either a) wanted to get us out of there quickly because they were behind on seatings and or b) had cooked everything in advance.
We heard about Bull Valley from a guy we met at a store on our way to Napa Valley. We went there sat at the bar ordered a couple bloody marys and some breakfast. Who knew this five star place would be right in the middle of what we considered nowhere as we were driving to it. We were feeling we might not be going the right way . We feel in love instantly with this this amazing place. What a cool vibe . The food and drinks are perfection and it has incredible history. We left and continued to talk about it the next five days of our vacation to wine country. We decided to cancel our last night sunset catamaran cruise so that we could stop and have dinner and drinks at our new favorite out of town spot. We were lucky to get a reservation because they get booked and we found out that the first morning when we walked in without a reservation and there wasn't any and were so lucky to grab the only two seats at the bar as people got up to leave. Anyone headed to California and are going to be anywhere near Bull Valley you should put it on your list of must dos. This will be our first and last stop on our yearly trip to California.
The food, service, drinks, and ambiance never disappoint! This time we had shrimp ceviche, the wedge salad, salmon, and macaroni gratin. We usually get the pork stew which is an all time favorite. Our new choices were just as good! Highly recommend!
Quirky, charming, David Lynch vibe. A real find, well hidden and well off the beaten track.
We always enjoy the food at The Bull Valley Roadhouse. We were less satisfied with the back room with the sloping floor and our table was blocking access to another room. The menu is classified as family style but it's not really. Sharing the portions is not easy and the size isn't really 'family' style.
Looked forward to it for so long. A beautiful fall Sunday morning. Server was perfect: completely "there" and generous with explanations and checking in just the right amount of times, non obtrusive otherwise. All staff from greeting to goodbye super nice. Just perfect food. Thanks so much.
