The Bull Valley Roadhouse
The Bull Valley Roadhouse serves American roadhouse food prepared from scratch with century-old techniques using fresh ingredients from our favorite small farms. A beacon at the end of a canyon road in the historic dock town of Port Costa, the roadhouse welcomes locals, travelers and adventurous day-trippers alike in its 1897 landmark dining room and bar. Stepping into the saloon-like rooms, guests can sense more than 100 years of hospitality. The proprietors strive to maintain that warm tradition and leave everyone feeling relaxed, well fed and eager to return. Look for us under the golden bull.
Sunday brunch served from 10:30 am through 2:00 pm.
Stunningly good food. Beautiful restaurant, and great service. A+!
Most amazing pork stew and margaritas!
As always, the food was excellent and our waiters were very friendly and attentive. We all had a great time. The only change from our last excellent meal was that some of the dishes appeared to be smaller portions? Not sure if this is more of a memory issue versus a fact, but we still left full and satisfied. We definitely recommend Bull Valley to all our friends.
We love the Bull Valley Roadhouse! The food is fantastic and we love the shared plate style!
I really wanted to take my family there . I have been there before . It was terrible and our food didn’t come out together . Won’t go back
Not my first time. I love this restaurant and enjoy sharing it with my friends. I also love I have family in this little village. The chef and mixologists are amazing. First rate Port Costa. Worth the crazy drive.
Celebrated an amazing culinary experience with my foodie daughter for her 30th birthday and family!! We are Bull Valley fans. This was our second brunch and have enjoyed a couple delicious dinners as well.
The Bull Valley Road House is an experience to enjoy. The Menu allows something delicious for every diet whether vegan, keto or vegetarian or good old-fashioned dishes with a bit of fat for flavor Our table of four for brunch shared biscuits and gravy, kale, chicken and waffles, chicken chilaquiles and fried green tomatoes. All was fabulous.
One change we’d like to see would be new chairs, solid and sturdier.
After brunch we enjoyed a fantastic blues band playing across the street. We rounded up some chairs, grabbed some beer and continued what was a fun afternoon.
Port Costa is a tiny gem of a town; street is more like it. A couple of shops, motorcycles and kind people enjoying the day with one foot off the grid.
This was our third, and probably last visit to Bull Valley Roadhouse. First time, maybe two years ago, I enjoyed enormously the bone marrow entree, which isn't often found on most menus . When we returned maybe last year, I discovered that that wasn't on the menu, and that (the menu changes daily. For this visit, I checked the website, and the bone marrow shows in the menu picture. However, calling ahead, we were told that it is considered a cold weather dish. We already had confirmed meeting our friends, so we kept the reservation, which I would otherwise have cancelled. I don't really need to travel 70 miles round trip for chicken, pork chop and salmon choices, which I can find at hundreds of other restaurants. Other than the bone marrow, the menu is limited and unexciting.
This place is just great. We have come with larger groups and the service was great then! Tonight it was just two of us and the portions were perfect for us to share and were truly delicious- we can’t wait to go again!
Ambiance was good; lots of charm and character.
Food was good, at best: Jalapeño Coleslaw was too vinegary, Breading on Fried Chicken was salty, portion size was very small (although menu claimed "LARGE PORTIONS" for family style eating).
I am glad we got a chance to eat there and experience the restaurant.
However, it is likely that we will not be eating there again.
Been here several times now and never disappointed. The cocktails are pricey but worth it and the food is always very good.
Very slow and inattentive service. Small portions of plates to share. Dry fried chicken. It was a birthday that we wanted to celebrate, and we were disappointed. Our fourth trip there...and perhaps our last.
Mussels are amazing!!!! Great host and staff! We frequently dine here, for good reason. Go on and try this spot out.
Love this restaurant.
Have returned here many times and always have found very friendly staff, very good food and fun ambiance. Great place for any special occasion.
Really good food.
Beyond excellent service.
Ridiculously small portions considering it is “family style” eating. Expensive for portion size.
The food is always great when visiting this restaurant. The service is excellent. Food is fresh and delicious!
I took my family here for a birthday several years ago and since that this is the only place anyone wants to go for celebration dinners. Everything I've had has been delicious. It's so worth the drive!
Vintage ambiance and excellent farm fresh food make this an outstanding restaurant. The service is spot on and the unusual decor and art (albeit somewhat dark) adds to a very unique dining experience.
Love the pre-prohibition cocktails and the wonderfully prepared food. Delectable.
Love this restaurant! The food, ambiance, and service are always amazing!!
Awesome ambiance and great food, but our server was not attentive at all. Not sure if the restaurant was extremely busy or if our server was having a difficult time multitasking. All other tables with other servers were getting serviced fairly quickly, so it was a bit disappointing.
Great food as always! Had too many service personnel as it was hard to keep track of at times but worked out fine.
Excellent brunch. Loved the ham hock hash. Can’t wait to come back.
We love this place! The food is delicious, the servers, skilled, gracious and fun (even when I spilled a full glass of water and extra time needed to be taken to talk through options for one of our guests who has celiac disease-they were very knowledgeable and accommodating by the way).
One of our favorite restaurants. Great food and great service. We will be back :)
Simon, our waiter, was terrific. The ceviche serving was really ridiculously small, mussels were amazing, pork chop was good (bed of beans was great) and fried chicken was super delicious. The town and the restaurant are like a throwback to the old west. Absolutely worth the schlep to the edge of the earth (aka Port Costa).
I have lived in Port Costa for almost 50 years. I have seen the Bull Valley go trough several owners. The present owner, Earl Flewellen, has created a top notch restaurant which hits all the buttons for ambiance, service, menu, and quality of food and drink. Gosh, and it is only 3 blocks away.

Loved it! Delicious and great decor!
I brought my parents here for a belated Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. We ordered the fried green tomatoes, mixed lettuces, fried chicken, pork stew, scalloped potatoes, and then the olive oil cake. Just so good. For drinks we did the rosemary and three others that I can’t remember the names of, but they were amazing. Everything about this place is nostalgic. It’s always special.
Never disappoints. Fabulous and creative drinks, food so good you feel like you’re in food heaven. Staff are professional and very friendly.
Our seats were perfect, the food was excellent, you had some of our favorite beer on tap (henhouse, yum). I think that was the BEST cup of coffee I've ever had. I never order dessert, but so glad I did! I am still thinking about that pot de creme.
Cannot wait to be back for more date nights and for brunch with our daughter!
Hoping to plan a post wedding brunch there for next June!
Awesome as usual.
Always such a pleasure to dine at the Bull Valley Roadhouse. Great for special occasions as well as a nice night out.
Great as always
We love this place. Funny drive in, but the food is worth the drive. That steak is incredible!!!
Food, drinks and service were superb! Fresh and high-quality ingredients combined to produce an amazing and unforgettable meal.
Superior meal by every measure. Looking forward to dining again
Great as always!!! The gin tonic with the botanicals was delicious
BVR continues to exceed all expectations. What a spectacular evening of dining with close friends. Everything about BVR: the ambiance, the food, the service is first rate. From the time you enter the front door you are made to feel welcome. “Sit down and enjoy everything we offer.”
With six, we were able to sample a variety of first course choices. The two that were most memorable were the Ceviche and the Tomales Bay Mussels. Two days later, I still salivate at the memory of the broth the mussels were steamed in. (Order lots of their wonderful sour dough bread to sop up the juices).
The dish to share that was the most memorable was the Smoked Pork Chip. It was richly flavored, fork tender; served over a bed of greens and a variety of beans.
The only entre I would pass on is the Fried Chicken. It was nothing memorable, I’ve had better elsewhere (try Revel - Danville).
We’ll return to BVR again and again
