The Bull and Beggar
We always go at 5 for the shell fish happy hour. The oysters are delicious. After a dozen oysters each we had two salads, both yummy followed by a fried oyster appetizer and grilled octopus appetizer for our main courses. All delicious and quite filling. Excellent service.
A fantastic experience! The food was delicious - highly recommend the hush puppies (seriously). Service was excellent and so accommodating to our kids (9 and 5). Highly recommend next time you are in Asheville!
As always....FABULOUS food!
We absolutely love this place! Our go to menu items are the Cote De Boeuf and the grilled octopus- both amazing here!
Enjoyed my Birthday Dinner at Bull and Beggar. Oysters are my thing and they were wonderful! My server was very helpful in choosing just the right ones. He was extremely knowledgeable.
The cauliflower side dish was not to my liking. It was grilled, but was very hard, and therefore difficult to enjoy.
Best burger in town.
I am a Burger Fanatic and the burgers at Bull and Beggar (a Monday special) are the BEST bar none. I used to think they were the 2nd best, but after being there this past Monday it's moved up to Number One. Killer!
While this is certainly an upscale restaurant, we felt perfectly comfortable having all our kids with us! They were well-behaved and well-fed. The lighting is just right - not too dark and not too bright. Staff was amazing and checked on us frequently, which we needed. The food was amazingly delicious. We had their infamous burgers as well as many of the appetizers. Our stay was about an hour, which was perfect with kids.
Absolutely fantastic meal. Don’t judge the restaurant by the parking lot or drive up. Just need to dodge the potholes. The cheese board was wonderful and the meal got better with each dish. The filet was excellent prepared perfectly. The broccoli was a treat. We finished with the caramel chocolate tart and it was great. Highly recommend Bull and Beggar. An absolute gem.
Fantastic food, quiet atmosphere, laid back unpretentious. Very upscale and awesome ambiance.
I love the food at this restaurant but it’s very very expensive.
Fabulous atmosphere. Exquisite food. Nicely paired cocktails and wine. Upstairs loft seating offers a different and unique perspective on this gem. Highly recommended!
I live in Manhattan, and I have been to many restaurants, and this one is superb! The server was so engaging and professional. He went out of his way to help us decide on a lovely meal. We were on vacation in Asheville, and recommendations viewed on OpenTable led us to this unique GEM!!! It is truly worth a visit! Wonderful European flair and outstanding service! The Chef is very talented and the staff all seem to enjoy serving the customers. The clientele also seemed to be locals, artists, business owners that were invested in a great experience. I will definitely return again!
One of my favorite restaurants in Asheville. Atmosphere is perfect for a date or girls night out. Be aware, this is not an inexpensive restaurant. You will probably drop $100+ per person if you get a bottle of wine. But, it’s a nice treat if you like a raw bar and small portions.
Good variety in small plates and entrees. Dishes well balanced and inventive. Space is inviting. Noise could be an issue but it was nice (good energy) while we were there
Our server devon was amazing! He was knowledgeable about the food and pick the perfect cocktail for me! We’ll definitely be back!
As prior posters have mentioned, gotta make it here for the burger. We were pleasantly surprised by the caramelized onions and, despite popular opinion, the bun! As a HUGE ketchup fan, I ate this dry... that's saying something!
Also highly suggest the Tipsy Daisy, basically the love child of a French 75 and a margarita.
My husband's gulf shrimp and lobster roll were also a winner. The lobster roll had large pieces of meat and minimal sauce. The bun was nice and toasty and added a great texture. The lobster roll was enough for a meal given there was also a small side of chips and the meat was plentiful!
Excellent as always. Creative and superb food and drink. Attentive and professional service. One of the top restaurants in Asheville. We are never disappointed.
One of the better meals. Steak was prepared perfectly. Ample selection of oysters. Service was attentive and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this restaurant.
This is probably my favorite restaurant in Asheville now. The food was spectacular and the service, even better! Will deff recommend to friends and family. I will be back soon :)
Service and ambience was great. Our server was very attentive and host was welcoming. Food was mediocre, unfortunately. We both ordered the filet and it was smothered in a sauce that only masked the flavor of the meat. Both of us requested medium and the steak was almost well done. The scallop potatoes- flavor was good, but it was covered in a deep layer of grease. The restaurant is in a quirky little area and we were looking forward to trying something great during our trip to Asheville. Unfortunately we were disappointed.
One of the best Fillet's in Asheville. The bone marrow is next level. I Will be back!
I’m a local. Love this restaurant but it’s expensive. Quality of food is wonderful. I would like a few more options for smaller plates to share to keep the cost down for visiting friends. Wine list is quite balanced. Mussels are always good as is lobster roll. I would not order the Tatar again if you love this dish. Desserts are unique and always interesting. Loved the rose geranium ice cream. 😋
My husband and I, celebrated our 42nd birthday,
our waiter- Robert made it very special, very knowledgeable on wine for me and beer for my husband, I went with every recommendation he had, thank you for Not disappointing! The food was AMAZING! we had the meat & cheese platter, I had 6 oysters (Robert's flavors), we also shared the Sea bass with roasted veggies...to die for! Thank you for the experience, we will definitely be back!
Love Burger night!! One of the best burgers in town!! Pork rinds are not to be missed either!!
So glad they found our reservation! We we're nervous for a minute! It was a fabulous evening!
We have been in search of the "perfect burger" for quite a while, and the Bull & Beggar's burger was well recommended. As I recall, the description said, ". . . to die for!" The burger was excellent and definitely one of the best, accompanied by crisp, natural (i.e. not pre-formed) fries. Beverage was additional. Often in competing restaurants a pint is included.
Our server, Nicole, was attentive, outgoing, and a very nice person.
Although I would not hesitate to recommend this venue, it would not be without mentioning that the menu offerings struck us as pricey, although there were selections that were unique and the quality appeared unimpeachable. This is a true gourmet restaurant with a definite French flair.
Fabulous food!!!! Great wine. Excellent service. Loved the atmosphere.
The service was very friendly: we were late and they sat us anyway without any disapproving looks. Mellow lighting and hip ambiance. The drink menu is very unique and each one was delicious. We were a table of 4, each ordered different cocktails and each ordered a second because they were so tasty. We had peel and eat shrimp to share which were pretty standard but the oyster menu is great and the sauce they serve them with complements perfectly. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Steaks were cooked perfectly and creamed ramp was a perfect side dish. Small plates: octopus well received, linguini with lemon, chilli pepper and shaved roe was AMAZING! My only complaint was the beef tartare was too chunky for raw meat. It was a bit difficult to chew. The ricotta fritters with cherries for dessert were so delicious! Overall a fantastic meal and will definitely go back.
A more intimate place than most. Not the noisy array of tables and anxious staff running around like chickens. This was relaxing with great personalized service.
Great atmosphere, good cote de boeuf and a good selection of wine. Highly recommend
Great dinner get the flaming ribeye it’s awesome and large
We ate at the Bull and Beggar in celebration of my son’s college graduation from UNC Asheville. I wanted a place that was a bit more upscale, from a food perspective, than what I’ve found in Asheville typically and the Bull and Beggar did not disappoint. The food was excellent, the service was great and the ambiance was exactly right. I will also say that while it isn’t inexpensive, expense is relative to what you get for your money and this was worth the price. I recommend this restaurant and will go back again.
The food and service were great.. the ambiance however does not match the food.. not necessarily a bad thing but it was very noisy and in an old warehouse . It is in the River Arts district and the parking was gravel and after all the rain it was muddy and full of potholes.. I would not let these issues keep me from going as the food and service were excellent but at least I would know what to expect.
Wish the menu had more options...very limited but that could be their objective...deliver what is offered on time and cooked correctly
Robert A. was a fantastic server! Great food, drink, and ambience. Will return and recommend to all my friends who visit Asheville.
We generally go to Bull and Beggar for "Burger Monday," and that was the case at most recent visit. A double-patty cheeseburger and hand-cut fries are $10 early in the evening, plus raw oysters and clams are half price.
The cheeseburgers were as good as ever (and a bargain on Mondays), and the oysters on the half shell were excellent, too, though even at half-price ($18 for a dozen) they aren't exactly cheap ... but this is Asheville, a long way from the coast. Bull and Beggar offers a selection of oysters from Washington State, New England, North Carolina and sometimes elsewhere, and they're also fresh and cold. They are served with the restaurant's special sauce and without any bread or crackers. Frankly, we miss the mix-your-own sauce (horse radish, ketchup, lemon juice and hot sauce) that we love in New Orleans.
My wife loves the Bull and Beggar version of the Vieux Carré cocktail, and I like the Plymouth gin martini.
Keep in mind that with its brick warehouse walls and wood floors, Bull and Beggar can be VERY noisy. It's not a spot to have an intimate conversation.
Cocktails were amazing, steak was cooked perfectly, and waiter was great too. The only thing that was not even edible was the tartiflette. Only order if you love stinky cheese.
This was one of the best meals we have had. The service, menu, selection, and drink menu is top notch.
Our meal was fantastic. We couldn't have asked for better food or service. Would highly recommend.
