The Breadfruit & Rum Bar Ratings and Reviews
The drink to entry pairing by our waitress was excellent. We are in the dining room. It was so noisy we couldn't talk without shouting. My salmon was small and undercooked. There were hardly any vegetables on my plate. My husbands ckn dinner was abundant with both ckn and vegetables. I would try a different dish and eT in the bar where it was quietist.
The food was excellent as always . Worth the drive for us . The rum punch bowl is a must . Changes every day . The food always makes me feel like we are back to Jamaica. The service as always exceeds my expectation. I dropped my napkin and my waiter saw that and immediately brought me a new one . Attention to all details . Food, service and ambience . I have been telling people about this place for awhile .
I always have a fantastic time when I visit the Breadfruit & Rum Bar. The restaurant staff are always kind, attentive, and polite. The food is delicious and so as the drinks. The outdoor area has a nice and calm environment where you can enjoy a delicious Cuban cigar. The quality of the alcoholic beverages are stupendous. If your looking for a place to hangout and enjoy some delightful food or drinks with friends, this is your place.
We are always on the lookout for authentic, yet nuevo, Jamaican/Caribbian fair that appeal to those born in the islands, as well as us who are landlocked in the Continental US. Most of the good Jamaican restaurants are so authentic is food, decor and laisse faire style that they chase the AZ locals away and quickly disappear. This is the perfect blend of traiditional mixed with haute. It's in the newly resurgent downtown Phoenix and looks across to to new two-story condos, where residents hang out at their balcony window and talk to neighbors who may be outside. We sat on the patio that consists of about 4 or 5 tables and loved it! Their rum drinks are to die for! Mark had jerk Cornish Game Hen with rice and peas (red beans), and I (wifey) had the curry tofu with jasmine rice. Both had a cabbage vegi blend, and mine had plantains. Both dishes and sides were delicious. It does get a little pricey if you have drinks, main course and desert. We split a butter rum cake that was good, but not quite as jaw dropping as everything else. I felt that, although described as soaked in rum, was very dry. No problem, we hopped over to Melt (my favorite ice cream place in the valley) for a not-needed, but satisfying 2nd dessert. We cannot wait to go back to The Breadfruit and Rum Bar.
I was very excited to go try food at breadfruit, but it was very disappointing. I started off with rum punch and prawns with johny cake. Rum punch had no flavor, and johny cakes were really dry. Then I ordered the lamb shank which was very salty and lacked flavor. The only good thing was the ambiance. Overall disappointing experience.
Restaurant is a quaint locale and easy to miss. No parking available so you need to park at the meters on the street (be prepared to bring change and get up once an hour to plug the meter). The rum cocktails are very good and unique (although somewhat expensive). Menu is nice but somewhat limited. They do not allow any substitutions whatsoever so do not ask. Service was good and friendly (although she charged us for drinks from another table). Food was not what I expected. The Jerk Chicken was flavorful but over cooked. We also had Lamb Shank Curry which was also flavorful but somewhat tough. The best dish we had was the Beef Stew. It was perfectly cooked and delicious. We ordered and shared a Run Cake desert. It was dry and very small for the price.
The service here is very poor. It took our server 10 min just to get our drink order. Another 15 min to bring it. And another 15 min after that to take our order. Dare I say it took another 45- 50 min. to get our food. We only stayed because we were hungry which was a big mistake, the food was certainly not worth the wait. We asked why did it take so long and it was the blame game, the server blamed the bar tender, the chef blamed the server and we blamed them all.
A true gem! Food and drinks are consistently good. The menu is unique and delicious. No holding back with the heat! The cocktails are amongst the best in the valley! Quality ingredients in both food and drink, would highly recommend trying this place. Thankfully, they do not have a burger or pizza on the menu!
Food is solid, I'd go back for that and willing to overlook the service that I experienced on my first visit. Everything from lack of greeting (simply told to have a seat and wait without checking me in), told can't get a drink and sit in waiting area, waiting about 5 mins to be greeted (once seated), and server telling us that a dish flat out "sucked".Then there was a whole credit card/payment issue that's frankly too lengthy to get into.
After typing all of that, I think I'll keep the place as one of those good place to go and have good food and enjoy the space, take the service with a grain of salt.
I am West Indian so I can only give the food mediocre approval at best. The food was salty and had too much spice for the average American palate although it was fine for me. The night went way left when their credit card processing system crashed. The waitress wrote down our CC numbers without our permission (exp date and security codes too) to run them later and acted offended when we asked for paper back and told her that we didn't give her permission to do that. We had to leave one member of our dinner party at the restaurant, take an Uber to an ATM, then come back and pay. We demanded that they discount the ATM fee and Uber fee from our check, which they complied. It was overall a bad experience, from the CC issues to them not telling us in advance that items were not available on their menu before we ordered them. They also refused to alter their drinks in any way.
This little gem of a restaurant really delivers on its promise of superb authentic caribbean food. Our food was tasty with just the right amount of spice for both myself and for my date who doesn't like spice. The owner was there and took the time to say hello and share some of his knowledge in a very warm positive way. When my date did not like the first drink they recommended they brought her another one that she really enjoyed without a blink of an eye. My drink was delicious. The waitress was attentive and pleasant. The whole restaurant makes you feel like you are at home in its decor and even its outside little patio. One can easily forget that you are in downtown Phoenix when you come here. I specifically have to than OpenTable because we never would have found this place without them and I hope our review gets others to try this wonderful restaurant.
The food was just fabulous! Best in Phoenix. The server was helpful and pleasant but it took FOEVER to be served; 2 hours from being seated to receiving the entree. We were there on a Friday night. Perhaps weekdays are better but I doubt it. But it was food not to be missed in spite of the terrible wait.
This was our third visit to this Jamaican restaurant, and we've greatly enjoyed it each time. They have daily specials on their rum punch, and a wide range of unusual drinks. The menu choices are all interesting versions of excellent fish and chicken dishes, many using an excellent jerk seasoning. The place is very small, so reservations are almost required.
excellent mixologist on staff, very creative and with their own extracts. everything rum based so i had to stretch some my dry preferences but the decoction creator took this in mind when i put myself in his hands. the food was good to excellent and i would certainly have tried more. the last drink was a citrousy take on a dry martini based on white rum. yeah, it worked really well.
The food and drinks at Breadfruit are amazing!! Our server was fantastic, and we really enjoyed our experience. I particularly enjoyed the roasted vegetables that came with the jerk pork dinner, and the Sailors Tipple cocktail! The only drawback was that we had a reservation for 6:45 p.m., and at about 6:50 were told that there would be about a 30 minute delay, even with a reservation. While not a huge deal, it was somewhat disappointing to be greeted with bad news - especially when you're hungry! We eventually got a table at around 7:30 and enjoyed everything else thereafter. We will be back, and hopefully won't have a delay next time.
HUGE rum selection! Service was great. Waitress knew the drink/food menu very well. Our table had the jerk pork and jerk chicken and both were amazing. Great flavor. Drinks were very good. Definitely a place I'll be returning to. Manager/owner(?) visited the table and was very pleasant.
Excellent Caribbean food and superior service. It has only a handful of tables, so reservations are a must. Likewise, with its small size, it can get a bit noisy, but nothing out of hand. It is a great place to have a very good casual meal. Highly recommended.
While the food is very good, and the server tried to be friendly as well as efficient, the not-customer-friendly rules and "airs" of this place certainly are uncalled for and conflict with a Jamaican theme. What chef yells for a server in the middle of her describing the deserts? What restaurant won't sell you a side of johnny cakes for the same price as johnny cakes plus shrimp? Etc. been here several times and won't be back unless companions insist on it.
This restaurant was such an impressive dining experience. The scallop appetizer was so good, we immediately ordered it again. The restaurant is very nice and the staff was knowledgeable and made the experience even better. I haven't been able to stop telling people about it, would definitely recommend.
Loved everything about Breadfruit. Terrific service, delicious cocktails and really interesting delicious food. The portions are on the small size but the flavors were rich and unique. We had the curried lamb shank, the pulled pork and polenta and the pork belly.
I enjoyed everything,,,, the service as soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a young man named Isaac, very warm and friendly. The waitress was Gabby she was super cute and friendly and helpful with the menu and drinks . The food was impressive visually and tasted delicious! The rum punch and sweet potato pie was a home run. Oh forgot the decor, loved it as soon as I walked in and saw the barrels of rum!! It was cozy and decorated very nicely
This restaurant/bar serves only drinks made from rum. No soft drinks or iced tea. Food was good, but beware of spices. Leaves your mouth burning. Disappointed that they do not serve decaffeinated coffee. Waitress said they "don't believe in it!" I pointed out, however, that certain medical conditions prevent some people from having caffeine. Overall, good, but I don't know that I would return.
