The Breadfruit & Rum Bar Ratings and Reviews
This place has never disappointed. I absolutely love dining here. Every detail of this business is well thought out from the amazing cocktails and menu, to the decor and reggae music selection. One of my favorite places to dine in the city. I cannot say enough good things!
LOVED this restaurant. We've wanted to get here since first hearing about it. We sat outside on a perfect Arizona evening and that was magical. The server - Christian- was a blast and excellent at her recommendations and tending to our every need. We started with a round of the rum punch bowl cocktails. Very fresh and not too sweet. My daughter and husband had the pulled pork and her friend and I had the tofu. Excellent, flavorful and a good portion. We had the best evening but try her recommendation for a rum pairing with your food on the rocks. The options are endless and it's my opinion if you go to a rum bar, try it straight so you can appreciate the smooth complexities. Don't forget to have a nightcap and cigar on the patio before you leave to round out your experience! We will be back!
This restaurant has changed over time, and the original ambiance seems to have disappeared. The food was too expensive for the minimalist serving size. The noise level made conversation a challenge. Sadly, we all agreed we would not return, even though the location was convenient to theaters, etc.
First and foremost Breadfruit/ Rum Bar has extensive selection of high quality rums. Those rums can be sampled by the glass or in a tasting flight. Likewise, they craft some amazing original cocktails and reinvent classics ultizing their exceptional Rum collection. Beyond the Rum, the carribean inspired menu features authentic flavors, ingredients, and some of the freshest fish in town. Standards are very high in this establishment and that includes the staff. But excellence does come with a price. So if you're on a budget, it might not be your first choice for dinner. But drinks and apps are pretty much on par with most other causal fine-dining restaurants.
This was our second trip. Let me say that our wait Person, Christian, was top notch. Unfortunately the same could not be said about the food. The food was okay, but considering the price, it should have been better. We also thought the prices were too high on the drinks. They were served in little glasses. Come on guys: Rum Punch should be served in a big glass. The Rum bar is really cute, music is nice, people very friendly and helpful.
Drinks were outstanding. Grazed on appetizers: scallops and the ceviche were excellent - almost ordered another round of the scallops. Shrimp and johnny cakes had good shrimp and sauce but johnny cakes were too dense, a bit dry & doughy. Overall, however, a great dinner & we will be back to explore more of the menus! Definitely recommended. Great place for dinner before a flic at FilmBar.
had a reservation had to wait for table. Table was what looked like a walk-in high top. Jammed next to a family of four. Felt like we could have tried their meal. Over heard their entire conversation. Food was excellent, service good. Portions of food were very small. Nice place, but probably won't return
We went to Breadfruit for my husbands birthday. We had reservations for 8:00 pm and were sat at 8:30 pm. While we waited no explanation was given for the delay. No one offered us a glass of water or an opportunity to go to the bar and get a drink while we waited. Once we were seated our server was very knowledgeable regarding the menu and the rum drinks. She was great. We started out with (2) small plates - ceviche and mussels. The ceviche was good, the crackers that came with it really good. The mussels were terrible. The presentation of them was very nice but they were beyond small and overcooked. They were so stringy they wouldn't come out of their shell - they were uneatable. We next had the Jamaican salad with jerk shrimp to split. It was so bitter that we couldn't eat it either. We should have said something regarding the mussels and did not. We should have said something regarding the super bitter and peppery salad and didn't. My mistake. We will not return.
This was my first visit and being located in the heart of the arts district in downtown Phoenix was appealing! This small and quaint restaurant had great smells of the Caribbean cuisine! We were seated close to the rum bar area which was neat to watch the bartenders mixing an assortment of rum cocktails ! The punch rum had a light hint that was unsweet and the lime sugar rum was freshly squeezed lime with rum! Of course had to have the sweet plantains with mango dip. The main meal was some sort of a beef stew with yucca potatoes rolled into a ball. The stew sauce was unbelievably tasty. Ended the night with a cigar and 15 year aged rum!
We went for a business dinner. The room was quiet and perfect on a Wednesday night for conversation. There is a reason that reviews list the rum drinks as exceptional. I don't think anyone tells you that rum us all they have though. The wait staff was knowledgeable and helpful in ordering, but once food arrived should have explained what was in the plate. If you're a hungry dude, order the chicken. The other mains are tiny. I had the fried whole fish and flavor was great but it was all bones because the fish was so small; the dush does not cime with sides. The menu claimed vegies were included but they were a pickked relish instead. The prok chop was decent but rather small for Phoenix restaurant standards.
From beginning to end our first visit to the Breadfruit was fantastic. Our server was attentive without being intrusive and was knowledgeable of the menu and bar selections. She made wonderful recommendations, and we enjoyed all our selections from appetizer to dessert.
The small dining room was wall to wall people. Very little space between tables led to a very loud dining experience. Almost impossible to have a conversation. Food was good but I wish there had been more variety of Caribbean side dishes on the menu. Might be worth giving a 2nd try when the weather is cooler and outside dining is an option.
My husband and I came for date night. The server and other staff were very attentive. Great recommendations since the food and rum drinks were a little foreign to us. Every drink and dish was excellent!!! Beautiful presentation. I ordered the small plates scallops and my server asked if I wanted to add vegetables... so delicious. We also had the ceviche and prawns small plates. Oh my goodness the sauce was so full of rich flavor. Would come back again. I loved how they had candles and low lighting for the evening. Not too many tables so you get a local cozy feel.
Recommended by my daughter as a restaurant before a concert we found it very enjoyable. It can be a bit noisy but service and food was above average. The one thing that I and the others with us were disappointed about was they would not provide a glass when ordering a beer. I drained my water glass and used it. Serving fancy liquor drinks but plopping down a bottle of beer like any old saloon just didn't fit the scene.
Will we go back again yes maybe for another concert.
This was my first time here and had no idea of the food or drinks, But our server was outstanding he help us to order the food and what drinks that went with it. It was one of the best meals I have ever had. I had the red snapper this time and I will be back to try more things . Everything was GREAT. It was a 3 hr drive to get there but will do it again very soon!!!!!
Another GREAT dining experience. Our server Christian was a PRO with recommendations. She was extremely warm, friendly, professional & totally non "booshie" (our previous server made us feel as if she was doing us a favor by 'allowing' us to dine @ Breadfruit). Our group tried most of the 'specialty' drinks that evening. ALL WERE AWESOME and UNIQUE! Look forward to bringing another group of friends or just a solo trip to enjoy the latest masterpieces. Thanks again!!
