The Breadfruit & Rum Bar Ratings and Reviews
How great it is to find a gourmet Jamaican restaurant in downtown Phoenix? Fantastic, small, cozy, charming place with a great rum bar. The cocktails are beautiful & unique. The cuisine over-the-top. It’s not often enough that you can’t decide what to eat when a menu has so many incredible options.
Was disappointed in the food. Pricey for what was served, and my meal was very bland - pork with butter beans and plantains. I've had this before in other locations and it can be a very rich, enjoyable meal. This was blah and the two slices of plantain were hard and flavorless. No condiments on the table - not even salt or pepper. This is supposed to be Jamaican based, but it missed the mark. When I asked for a jerk sauce or condiment sauce, I did get one which had a wonderful flavor, but was charged extra for it. The outdoor setting was nice, our waiter was very pleasant, but there was an extended wait after ordering before food was served. I don't think we'll visit this restaurant again.
This is a very nice restaurant. The food is creative and very good and the range of drinks is amazing. The wait staff guides you as to what drinks go best with the food and are knowledgeable about the unique ingredients on the menu. The only negative for us was the difficulty seeing the menus as the lights are very low. Fortunately, we had light on our phones.
Thank you Danielle and Dwayne for another amazing experience. I had friends in from Chicago who dine at many amazing restaurants and they loved the food and the ambiance. They wanted to come back again the next day, but it was Sunday. What a unique local treasure.
One of my favorite restaurants in the entire world. The service is great, the rum selections are unbelievable and the food well, a party in your mouth. It’s just makes you happy to dine there and for the mega affordability, you feel like you’re on vacation that someone else paid for. Don’t pass on the pork or the tofu dishes. And just ask the server for their suggestion on a complimentary rum to your food selection, enjoyed on the rocks, maybe lime, so you can really experience it. If you prefer mixed cocktails the house rum punch is hard to beat. Outside dining is awesome when the weather permits. Stop by the cigar patio at least once to say you did. Cannot wait to get back!
Finally, a locally owned restaurant that is stepping out of the unfortunate norm of pizza, forbidden rice bowls, overpriced organic squash cooked the same 'ole way, and other 'trendy' locally owned menus. Breadfruit menu is innovative, genuine attention to homemade spices and combination of such. Refreshing, especially as compared to the Fox and Uptown restaurants which stay safe and mimic each other. It's great to support locals AND menu diversity, plus the quality is unquestionable. The owners obviously have heart and care, the wait staff is prompt, knowledgable and allow just the right amount of alone time. If you arrive early it is quiet and intimate. However, after 7:00 pm the scene changes and the noise level increases.
The Breadfruit was wonderful. The (whole) fish of the day was delicious. Saturday night soup (soup of the day) also wonderful. The plantain appetizer, tostones, scrumptious. The rum bar is adorable and the dining area is small and comfortable. Eric in the bar was masterful with his drinks and fun to talk to. Try The Breadfruit!
I've been to The Breadfruit many times, and the service was excellent as usual. Our server was well versed on their offerings, informative and attentive. The food was on par with their usual quality except the Curried Goat dish. While the rice and curry sauce had wonderful flavor , the goat was very disappointing. I received a bowl of goat bones and cartilage, with very little meat on any of them. The carrots were also very undercooked (nearly raw, which made them difficult to cut with the knife, so I just picked them up and ate them). For the price point, the curried goat was underwhelming, and not up to their standards. This is not what I usually experience here, and it certainly will not keep me from returning. I just hope more care is paid to what they're putting in the bowl next time. If the goat matched the flavor of the sauce and rice, this would be a wonderful dish.
All of the appetizers looked so good that we had 2/3 of them for a meal. My date and I found most of them to be salty and over-seasoned. We were there early, so we had a parking place right in front. Good thing because we had to run out and feed the meter halfway through the meal.
Everything great except their rigid policy not to seat a party until all members arrive. I arrived for my 5:45 reservation for two to a nearly empty restaurant. My companion was running late but the hostess refused to seat me. I was tired after a workday and wanted nothing more than to be seated so I could order a drink and appetizer. I was successful only with a fuss, which is not my style. After that, all was great!
The food and the cocktails are to die for here. Really, just stunning. Okay, but..... Although servers were kind, efficient, friendly and accurate, there are some improvements they need to make. They charge fine dining prices, and for fine dining prices they need to box up my leftovers for me, and they need to put the leftovers box in a bag. Also, unless coffee is identified as a specialty coffee, then coffee needs free refills. Really, $12 for 2 1/2 cups of coffee? We were happy to pay high prices for fine rums and wonderful meals. But not for coffee refills.
Birthday gathering and The Breadfruit offered the perfect ambiance! The food was great - sharing plates are small but awesome; the entrees -- OMG! Superb. The guys are both cigar smokers so that was truly a bonus.
If you enjoy GOOD Jamaican food - put it on your list.
This place has a relaxed feel. My after-work type of spot. I have tried most of the dishes and have never been disappointed. I definitely would return to try the rest of the dishes. I especially like the escovitch fish and the jerk chicken. The rum cocktails are amazing.
Service was well-timed and friendly.
Did I already mention the amazing cocktails?
We dined there on Saturday night-- with reservations-- but we were still late being seated at 6PM. The food was Very Disappointing! The food was so salty it was hard to eat. None of us could enjoy the meal. The best item on anyone's plate was the plantains.
As an example: I ordered the escovitch fish. Small and bony is OK. Overcooked, very salty, and covered with onions was not OK. Especially when I asked the waitress to leave off the Escovitch (pickled) onions. And then there were the the grilled onions tucked inside, she said were not there.
Good drinks. Not going back for the food.
A great find. Food was of good quality ingredients and very delicious. It’s several notches higher than your run of the mill neighborhood Jamaican restaurant for it goes beyond in presentation, cooking style and attraction to a more diverse foodie clientele. We plan to go back there for many more times.
The food was excellent. However, the noise level was excessive to the extent that normal conversation was a challenge. Having lived in Jamaica for three years, we felt that there was an authentic atmosphere. However, the lighting made it impossible for me to read the menu. We were on a fairly tight schedule due to theatre tickets. We felt that once we did not accept the waiter's recommendations he lost interest somewhat and our food was a long time coming. I would like to try the restaurant again under different circumstances - it has potential but I do think that the noise and lighting issues need to given attention.
