The Bombay Bread Bar is Chef Floyd Cardoz's love letter to the glorious food and culture of his native India, serving riffs on Bombay's street foods and traditional dishes reimagined. Nestled in the heart of SoHo, the colorful and vibrant space was designed by set designer Kris Moran, a longtime member of director Wes Anderson's creative team.

Had a set menu (option 1) for 10 and it was delicious but we were given way too much food! It was such a shame to waste so much, but we couldn't finish even half of what's given. I would have preferred the option to order our meal purely a-la-carte (didn't seem like an option from my email exchange).

Beautiful interior, service and ambience though. I will definitely be returning to try more of the a-la-carte options.

Worst service ever. We were asked what kind of water we wanted by three different waiters. The timing of all the food was off. Only the breads were worth trying. There was a very large and loud party next to us and it felt very crowded. We never knew who our waiter was and I was looking forward to just having the evening end and just leave. Not going back.

The pacing of serving could be better. We went in at 7 pm and the food came so fast that we were done by 7:30 and we were feeling so weirdly stuffed. It almost felt like may be we are being served pre-made food. The dal pakhwan chat was a bit cold. The kulcha club was okayish. The taste was just not for me. We loved eggs kejriwal toast and cheddar cheese naan..

We had great time at this place, it was a last minute booking and we still got a very nice table. Staff was very nice and helpful, made great suggestions for the menu.
The food is meant to be shared but each dish coming out was better than the previous. Great modern twist on Indian cuisine.

I was a fan of Paowalla and was excited to see the new version of the space by visiting Bombay Bread Bar. Food overall was very good. I think $5 for one piece of naan is a bit steep, but otherwise had a great dining experience. My one complaint was my friend and I were seated in the back of the restaurant and it was almost impossible to hear one another. Between the other diners and a party of 12 the room was VERY loud. The tables are also close together so servers and other guests kept bumping into us which was irritating. Otherwise a very nice dining experience and would return again (but only sit in the front of the space).

Loved the food, a little on the pricey side for some of the items such as the kerelan fried chicken. Unfortunately service was slow and often confusing. Took the waiter 30 mins to comeback to our table to tell us four of the drinks we ordered were no longer available and servers didn’t know which dishes we had ordered. The place has a good vibe but wish the AC was not so cold, my fiancé had to sit through dinner wearing a coat and scarf despite asking for temp to be adjusted.

I'm sorry to report that Bread Bar is a very poor imitation of Paowalla, its previous incarnation. I visited Paowalla four times and had excellent food and great service each visit. But in their effort to make it more casual and turn it into Bombay Bread Bar, everything has slid into rather mediocre territory.
To provide just three of several examples, my full party of two arrived 14 minutes ahead of our reservation. We were told our table was not ready yet. As I had made a counter reservation and every single counter seat was indeed available, I asked whether we could not be seated early. The hostess informed us that they were preparing an actual table for us so to please be patient. Fine. Great. However, after sitting at the bar (where the bartender took our order and then promptly forgot to make our drinks) for 10 minutes, she returned to tell us our seat at the counter was now ready. I reminded her of her promise of a table and she looked at me as though we had never had that conversation and insisted that she could only seat us at the counter.
When we ordered, we both ordered by saying "I'll have X for an appetizer and Y for my main course." Then the food came out one dish at a time, starting with my entree. I refused it, asking for my appetizer and the servers acted as if they had never heard of such a concept before and kept delivering dishes in no particular order.
Finally, I asked our server (while pointing them out to him) what the diced, white, crunchy fruit was surrounding the vanilla kulfi. He said he did not know but returned a while later to tell me it was blood orange. Yikes.
And the food was good but not nearly the level it used to be.
I can understand wanting to make the place more casual, but letting the standards slip this far won't appeal to many people. I cannot imaging returning or recommending Bombay Bread Bar to anyone after this visit.

I’m sorry but this was the worst service I’ve experienced in nyc in 5 years. Please advise your staff that 3 waiters a table with multiple items ordered that never made it to us is unacceptable in a service industry such as nyc. This lack of attention will spread and bad service will close your restaurant.

While the food was pretty tasty, the service and value detracted from the dining experience. A $15 small plate of cauliflower paneer curry came with 2 pieces of cauliflower and one piece of paneer. Upon asking for more paneer, it was brought out ice cold. Cocktails sounded good on the menu but were watery and uninteresting in execution. Service was very disorganized. Not a great experience overall.

We had a reservation for 9:00 and when we arrived, we still had at least a 20 minute wait. It seemed like they were either understaffed or the waiter just really didn’t know how to serve tables but the service was horrible. Food wasn’t great and rushed. Waiter was really rude but it was almost comical. Skip this place.

Although the server was pleasant the kitchen / service was super slow, chaotic, with no order to the dishes coming out. When I mentioned the Garlic Nann didn’t taste of garlic, she responded - yes a lot of people say that, it’s because the garlic is baked in to the dough - WTF??? The draft beer - Brooklyn or Mermaid Pilsner is served in a SMALL double thick PLASTIC glass for $10, again wtf?? $10 for a small local beer. The Indian bottle beer is $9 further complicated by the fact, she told me to ignore that it’s called Bira (Italian), says it’s made in the US - but yes this is the Indian beer we have or the 1947. This is my second visit here, and last. The menu limited. You would be much better off fine dining at Tamarind for not that much more.

This is our fourth or fifth dinner at Bombay Bread Bar (and it’s earlier incarnation Paowalla). The service has never been great but it was particularly inattentive—forgetting to of the dishes we ordered, having to work very hard to flag down a server. But worse is that the food was really average. The kulchas and samosas are always very good, but a main dish of fish was dry, lukewarm and sweet—no nuance, just one uninteresting note of flavor. With so many excellent choices for Indian and Indian-inspired cuisine in the city, I think we’ll go elsewhere next time.

Food, Service and Ambiance was all fantastic! We had come to Bombay Bread Bar two times before and the overall experience has been consistent.

Two things that stand out and make me a returning customer.
1. Most restaurants in Manhattan, especially in fancy neighborhoods like SoHo are charging an insane amount of money for dinner. Often you'll find the cheapest main course on the menu to be over $40. BBB keeps their prices reasonable and diners are getting a great value!!!
2. The cauliflower dish from the large plate items!!!

My husband and I had booked tickets for a private event related to the Indian-ish cookbook tour. We were really excited to attend, but I came down with a terrible flu (while 6 months pregnant). Not only would it be no fun for other if I attended (and got everyone sick), but I needed my husband to tend to me at home.

I tried contacting the restaurant for exceptional case evaluation, and not only did they deny to consider our situation for a refund or future voucher of some sort, but the woman I spoke to lied about how this type of event gets handled. She sent me to OpenTable, and OpenTable’s great customer support team explained that it’s entirely the restaurant’s discretion on how to handle these cases. When I called the restaurant back (still sneezing, coughing, and miserable) I explained the new information to the same woman, who then explained “this would cause us to lose revenue”.

Well, I guess she didn’t learn about good customer service and empathy skills while in training, because not only has she lost my patronage for that evening but I will NEVER plan to visit this restaurant again. And I will make sure anyone I know hears about this story. Terrible experience.

The restaurant was well designed, and the food was good - definitely not amazing. The food was overpriced, especially in terms of the quantitates. We ordered a plate of assorted papadums, but turns out they weren't really assorted after all. We got 3 pieces of the same type of papadum. When we asked the someone working at the restaurant if they were supposed to be assorted, she simply said "no" and walked away, despite the fact that our check even stated that it was supposed to be assorted. Overall, our experience was OKAY, you wouldn't be missing out anything if you do't make it to the restaurant.
