Seafood
The Boathouse is a waterfront, seafood café, bar and takeaway. We’re situated overlooking the Mayflower Steps and just a stone’s throw from Plymouth’s historic Barbican. Our speciality is local fish and shellfish, sustainably caught, by our own day boats, The Sidney Rose, The Barbican Rose and the Elin D. The Scallop Shack at The Boathouse serves fresh, South West, scallops, in a variety of mouthwatering ways. There’s also a selection of meat and vegetarian dishes and a little nipper’s menu, designed for younger salty sea dogs – all made with fresh, seasonal produce. The Boathouse is the perfect spot for cosy coffees and delicious dining from daytime through to evening. With our retractable roof for sunnier days you can dine with us, alfresco and enjoy wonderful, waterside views.

We were visiting from Surrey and needed somewhere for early lunch in the Barbican area. The seafood (calamari, scampi, scallops and battered fish) were delicious and arrived really quickly. The coffee was good and the views of the sea were nice.

Lovely meal. We had scampi and sea bass, the only disappointment was that there was only one piece of sea bass left as it was lovely. Only other problem we had was locating the restaurant in the dark as it is tucked away amongst quite a few places to eat. Would though highly recommend this restaurant.

The location was great, but the food was relatively bland and the service could have been better. The restaurant experience was much better a year or so ago and we may not return as a result.

Nothing special at all. Great menu but I felt the food wasn’t great at all. Would not go again and wouldn’t recommend. Great position though.

Waited over 30min for food with no staff attention to let us know about the wait. Fish finger sandwich as stated on the menu was supposed to be panko breadcrumb goujons but it was just ordinary fish fingers with thick sliced tomato and lettuce in a fish finger sandwich!!….

We ordered the seafood platter at £45 and the majority of it tasted like it had just been chucked in the deep fat fryer. It had very little flavour and arrived just warm so was cold after 5 mins of eating it.
The food was ok but not worth £45. We ate it and obviously paid in full - I passed my feedback onto the staff, who were very friendly and helpful, but unfortunately, none of our party of four will be returning.

Ordered the same meal the seafood linguine but both meals came completly different and my husbands was very sandy.
The wait for food was around and hour.
And the roof was down and doors open which made it very chilly, as it was out the sun.
The gentleman we spoke to about the meal did not seem interested where as the lady behind the bar apolgised and reduced the bill (which we didnt expect)

Overall we were very dissapointed and had experience better seafood meals from other local resturants

Several items on the menu weren’t available including three main courses and several desserts.
Childs fish fingers chips & beans looked & tasted amazing- however adults fish & chips were smaller portions than the child’s.
Service was great food not so good tables nicely spaced out.

The food was tasty and the girl who serves us was lovely, however despite the restaurant looking only half full there was a lengthy wait for the food and when it arrived, 3 out of the 6 orders were incorrect, extra items we ordered weren’t delivered and standard breakfast items were missing from the plates and we had to wait further for those items.
However the setting is lovely and the ambience is nice, very dog friendly, just a shame we seemed to pick a bad day for them

After reading some of the reviews prior to booking was a little apprehensive. The food and service was very good. In one review they said portion sizes were small we didn't find this to be true. Our mains and starters were delicious. Sardines and whitebait followed by the mussels and a seafood linguine. The waiting staff were very attentive. Would definitely dine there again. Well done.

The food was overpriced for the portion I received (scampi). It was 6 pieces of scampi on a small portion of chips. The floor was sticky and we sat at plastic tables and chairs. It was like eating overpriced food in a cafe. The wine glass was cheap and scratched from being in the dishwasher so often. I was very disappointed for the price I paid.

Friendly and attentive staff at The Boathouse. The food was excellent and perfectly cooked. The fresh sardines had an excellent flame grilled touch which was lovely. Shared a Shack Attack scallop platter between two and couldn't finish it. Every scallop perfectly cooked. Great wine too and only £19 a bottle. I would definitely recommend this restaurant following my first visit and will be returning. I would say however that it does need some décor to create a greater ambiance and more interesting environment i.e. plants, statues, table dressings etc to brighten up the place and make it more interesting. Loved it though and stayed for a fair few hours. Well done !

We had the seafood platter to share. The scallops were lovely, so were the chilli king prawns. Unfortunately all the breaded/battered items were very dry, over cooked and hard. The sardines were inedible. The dish came with bread and butter and coleslaw which didn’t arrive until we’d almost finished. I asked for a pint of lime and soda and was brought a half although charged for a pint. The serving staff were lovely but overall the food wasn’t good.

Although the seafood was overall good quality, it was poorly cooked and presented. Staff were too young and inexperienced to cope. Ambience was very poor. We hope we just caught them on an ‘off evening’ after a busy day.

Food superb We had starters and mains only as service was so slow we gave up on sweets and coffe
Lovely setting overlooking the Marina.
Music so loud we couldn't chat which made the long waits worse.
Would go again to see if it wss just a one off but dont feel I could recommend it after first experience

Second time I've taken visitors to eat here in the last month. Bothtimes were very disappointing On both occasions they were out of fresh fish, their speciality & what I guess most people go there for! After all it is owned & run by a fisherman with his own fishing boat business...right on the waters edge where the boats full of fish dock. Also one of the largest fish markets in the country is two minutes walk away
The first time I forgave them as we visited one day after the National Firwork Competition & they had run out of fish because they had been so busy.
Last night however there was no excuse for no fish at 6.30pm
I won't take visitors there again even though it is a lovely restaurant. Without boat fish dishes the menue is very limited .....although the scallops were very good starters

Lovely location with excellent staff.
Meghan & Izzy were fun, efficient & provided an excellent service.

The food was fresh, good value, cooked & presented very well & filling.

We felt that the food we ordered along with the accompanying drinks was excellent value for money, the only slight criticism we could make was that there were no specials available (which was due to the restaurants own fishing boat being out of action due to being serviced).

In summary, excellent location offering a good choice of food with great staff & we would definitely return.
