Fantastic food, atmosphere, and, while expensive, I would say the price is worth it. Highly recommend the crabcakes and short ribs.
Overall, our experience was good! With the new COVID process of placing our family's order via our phone, we accidentally ordered double portions of sides not realizing they were part of the entree order. Twas an expensive mistake but made for good leftovers at home :)
We had a reservation for 8pm. When we arrived at 7:45, we were told that while they did have our reservation, they did not have a table for us. They instead, seated us at a high top at the bar where it was crowded and loud. I requested they move us to a table once one opened up, and was told no; that they had too many people they needed to seat. Now given, it rained, so they needed to relocate the diners that were outside, and i was understanding of that and happy to wait. But that was not an option according to the hostess.
The ordering system was not clear. Due to COVID precautions, they have a mobil ordering system where you scan a QR code and input your order through the mobil app. I learned, once I flagged down a server after 20 minutes of looking around for help, that you submit your entire dinner (drinks, apps, entrées, and deserts) at the same time. Otherwise, you have to open a new check/tab anytime you want to add something (e.g. a second drink).
Needless to say, the beginning of our experience was not what I'd hoped for or expected. This was our first time at The Boathouse, as well as our 11th wedding anniversary. I will say that the food was delicious and the service improved after we placed our order in the app. I recognize the new ordering system is likely new for everyone (guests and employees alike). It was just difficult and unwelcoming to try and navigate without any initial greeting or explanation other than "scan the code to order".
I am open to going again and giving The Boathouse a second chance, but I'm afraid my husband will be a hard sell.
Missed the actual brunch items from the menu posted online. Restaurant was currently only serving lunch options.
We were there to say bon voyage to a dear friend who was moving. Waitress showed us how to order using the spot. She was very good. Food was excellent. Day was fantastic.
Beautiful night on the patio. I love the order with the app which allows you to dine at your own pace. I liked the previous app better as it saved your credit card info for future orders during that dining experience. The new one required a signin or reentering every time for us that was 4x
The food was really good, though rather pricey-especially the oysters.

Horrible experience - we got up and left after 30 minutes and still no drinks. They make you order and pay by phone and service was SLOW. Tried to order dinner and the site tried to re-order the drinks. Asked for help and waited for several minutes and no one showed up. We finally gave up and walked. We've been going to the Boathouse for years and are usually satisfied. We won't be back until they change their system.

We decided to have dinner at The Boathouse, Sunday Park last Thursday. The online reservation was a breeze. Upon arrival, the staff presented as personable and respectful of social distancing techniques. Ordering from the table using the App was quick and easy, but the most important part of all is all the food ordered was perfect and delicious (especially the shrimp and grits). In addition, the waterfront view was amazing. We will return again very soon. Thanks for a very enjoyable dining experience.
The food is always good at The Boathouse and the view is spectacular! I did not care for the touchless order and pay system in place at all. It took us 20 minutes just to figure that out, order food, and pay online. This is the only restaurant I've been to post COVID that does this. Why not just hand out paper menus, or at a minimum have the servers just write your order on a piece of paper?
This visit was a debacle from start to finish. The automated ordering system is not user friendly and the waitstaff was not helpful in guiding us. As a result, the four of us received our food at different times. My friend was finished with her entree before my husband and I got ours. Her husband received the wrong burger and it took a lot of time to get that corrected. Our$8 Caesar salad consisted of a few leaves of lettuce and dressing. They could not accommodate my request for GF croutons, so that was my entire salad— not even any anchovies! My short ribs were over salted and fatty. And the food appeared to be pre-prepped and rewarmed. We wanted coffee and desert, but it was too much trouble to try to use the system again. My friend complained to the manager about all of our issues, telling him how we would have liked coffee. The manager said he would arrange for us to get coffee. The coffee arrived, along with a check for $15: $5 for each coffee. We had assumed, mistakenly, that the manager would have comped the coffee as a gesture of good will. He threw away an opportunity to redeem the restaurant’s reputation.
We live locally and the Boathouse is an easy choice for us. The management can be assured that we will not be returning and we will tell everyone we know about our terrible experience. (By the way, the manager bragged to my friend that their sales were up and no one complained about the ordering system. From our point of view, they have nothing to brag about!)
Horrible. Worse wedding anniversary ever. Ordering from an app and not getting service and then getting charged an automatic 20% gratuity was disgusting. I won't ever go back
Had a great time at the restaurant the other evening. The server even moved us to a table with a better view of the sunset.
The food is way overpriced, for what you get. My mother's chicken tenders were overcooked. My granddaughter's mac-n cheese looked like it was Kraft, box mac-n-cheese. I would expect better from a "fine dining" restaurant. We have dined at The Boathouse many times over the years, and I can honestly say, this is the first I have been extremely disappointed.
They asked me about the special occasion when confirming the reservation, but didn’t acknowledge it when we were there.
We are still struggling with their contactless ordering system, but the setting is worth the hassle.
First time ever being here. Brought my dad here for his 60th birthday. I recently moved from Colorado to Virginia. Everybody I talked with recommended the boat house. Food was outstanding, and service was excellent. The staff was upfront about new policy changes due to Covid. I absolutely recommend the boat house and will be back for special occasions.
The food was great. The customer service was poor by the receptionist. We were snapped judged at the door, she seated us up stairs away from the other guests as if we didn’t belong. Very disheartening.
We were a party of 6 and my hubby is in a motorized wheelchair, making it challenging sometimes. The manager and staff quickly rearranged our table down to the bar area, giving us easy access and plenty of space!! We had a great evening together!
Service was very poor- 20% gratuity for no server. Food portions have been greatly altered. Very difficult to order using cell phone. We felt like we were eating at the morgue with all the black uniforms and masks. Just awful-
The new system of ordering/paying is a pain. We were told about it as soon as we were seated, but after navigating through the app both we and our friends double tipped for someone simply bringing our drinks and food. All of our food tasted good, but was warm, but not hot. Also, when I was called to confirm our reservation I was asked if there was a celebration that should be recognized. I said that it was my husband's birthday. This was also mentioned by the hostess while we were being seated. However, nothing was done in recognition for his birthday.
Overall, the dining experience was mediocre at best. When the Boathouse gets back to the traditional way of service, we may give it another try.
Had friends in town and wanted to take them somewhere unique. Sat inside and upstairs near the windows. A great view of the water was a perfect addition to our evening. With Covid they have contactless ordering, so you use the QR code and place your order for everything. We ordered the filet, which she said was the best filet she has had in a long time. The salmon dish had candied pecans, cauliflower, cranberries, and butternut squash purée. She said it was like a thanksgiving dish with salmon. The scallops were perfectly pan seared with a tasty apple slaw and celery root purée. Couldn’t have asked for a better dinner or view.
Unfortunately, they have gone to an order online from your table system. That took the waitress out of the picture. The waitress was very nice. But, since she didn’t take our order, we saw her once and then several other people brought the food. So, interaction with staff was very poor. It made for a very sterile atmosphere. Not something I’d go back for.
We didn’t mind the contactless ordering system, even though it requires multiple orders. We just made sure we placed our entree orders at the same time. The food and views were excellent as always, and we were grateful to be able to eat at our favorite restaurant with outdoor seating and social distancing.
Everything is wonderful about this restaurant: scenery, ambience, cocktails and food. What gets in the way of this being a totally relaxing and enjoyable dining experience is the tedious work of ordering, paying, and constantly having to re-enter my name, email, and payment info on my phone every time I order or add something to my order. It’s a pain and takes away from the relaxing atmosphere my wife and I like to enjoy when we go out. Other restaurants we frequent don’t put us through all this!
I HATE the no touch ordering. It seems so impersonal. Order appetizers, pay, order meal, pay, order dessert, pay....
Our waitress was nice but once again very little interaction with her
I got biscuits and gravy with eggs and potatoes. Eggs were perfect, potatoes were lukewarm and kind of soggy though flavor was ok. The BEST sausage gravy I have ever had but unfortunately again it was lukewarm. I did not complain mainly because I didn’t want to have to wait for it to be redone. Very frustrating because if they are going to automatically add on 20% “service charge” it seems as though our food should be fresh and hot
Though I LOVE the Boathouse probably won’t be back until things return to normal.
We have dined here in non COVID-19 times. The changes they have implemented have made the experience very impersonal. As always, the food was exceptional, just poor presentation and poor service.
We've been there several times and always great atmosphere, food and service. We went just before sunset so we could see the reservoir and sun setting over it while sitting outside. You can see this from inside too from select tables. It started getting cold so we asked if we could move inside which they promptly and cheerfully did for us. You must order by cell phone while at your table which is a bit odd but not all the difficult when you get past the initial weirdness of doing this.
We had a table outside with a great view of the water Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable. The food was excellent and we really enjoyed everything
