Great experience. Beautiful views of the river and downtown, great food and tasty cocktails. A very nice place to see the sunset!
They charge a 20% service charge and a tip is not included in that. So you have a 35% fee on top of city taxes and regular rates.
Really disappointed. Everything is ordered from your phone (and you’re charged a decent service fee - mine was $15 on a $200 bill). Order was placed - oysters, salads, filet and scallops. They brought the salad first and EVERYTHING else a few moments later. We scrambled to eat the steak and scallops while hot and then raced to eat the dozen oysters before the ice melted. No one came to check on us so we couldn’t even fix the situation. We also purchased a $45 bottle of wine (which came late) and were bluntly informed by the woman serving us “I’m retraining so this should be good” she struggled to even get the bottle open and then yelled “who am I serving first?”.... so what little service we received was terrible. Aside from being charged to put your own order in (and appetizers / entrees being served at the same time) you’re required to tip at the time you place your order (you also pay at that time) so there is zero incentive for anyone to check in or provide anything close to decent service - and that is for any level restaurant - let alone a white table cloth. Both of us have worked in the food and bev industry and understand how it works, this was a collective fail across the board. During this time of uncertainty we chose to spend our money on local, small businesses. We would have had better service at a Panera. Writing this in hopes they find a way to fix this before they suffer from having an unfixable bad rep.

We came in for my birthday tonight, which was noted on reservation. No acknowledgement of it. Service was not the best. The lobster was okay.. pre cut messed up the way the meat came out. The salmon was not good. It was over cooked and very dry. Overall experience not so good, but the view was wonderful.
We had a wonderful time. My wife’s lobster was perfect and I enjoyed my ocean scallops. The wine was good and we took an order of apple cobbler home.
The smart phone ordering system was easy to use. Paying as you go means you can leave as soon as you finish dining. No waiting on the bill and no signing the credit card slip.

I had been to the Boathouse at Shortpump before but never this location. WOW! What a great view of the James! The location and view alone were lovely. Additionally, the food was delicious and in general, service was very good. We got a dozen oysters and they were the best! The peel and eat shrimp were also very good and would recommend. The bloody marys - -terrific! The only note I would mention is that I ordered bacon as an add on to my eggs benedict and the bacon never arrived. Otherwise, things were very prompt and very happy with this location, food and service!
Enjoyed our 25th wedding anniversary and it was the perfect place. The atmosphere was wonderful. The food and service were great! We really enjoyed our evening after traveling an hour to get there. Look forward to going back!
The food was amazing. The scallops in particular were outstanding. The only thing I could see needing improvement would be the drinks. Our drinks were $16 a piece and we would have liked to have more drink and less ice.

Fantastic food. A bit pricey but well prepared. Service was good but a bit of a chore with contactless phone ordering and multiple credit card authorizations alerted the fraud department at my bank. Working out that link would be helpful!!
Lobster Mac and cheese paired with an excellent Oregon Pinot noir. Plenty of room to get comfortable. Nice relaxing evening.
The contactless order was just really underwhelming, and once we were brought our stuff they didn’t really worry about us. Missed those connections with the staff. Spilled 80% of my $12 drink half way through and no one noticed, I basically cleaned it myself. When our dessert was brought out they noticed and didn’t do anything. I know it was my fault but still I needed another napkin or drink or something.
Portion of the salmon was scarce, but it tasted good. Seafood Mac was really good. Creme brûlée was okay. Not enough sugar on top and the custard wasn’t very cold. I liked the ambiance and might give this place another try if we ever get back to normal.
We were very disappointed by the experience. First, the order needs to placed through the phone, similar to like if you are ordering delivery from home. Then, the quality of food was low, the fish was mediocre, yet still expensive. Despite the online order, they still automatically charge 20% for the service which is not existent. Overall not a good experience and I don’t recommend it. Except for the location, which is nice since on the water, the rest was very disappointing.
We had a great time outside on the balcony. Our waitress was helpful and very great and we loved the food and the ambiance. We had a great view of the water and city and since we were just visiting Richmond, it was the best place to enjoy a nice date night in a new city!

I appreciate their COVID restrictions - order only from your phone, no timing of orders - but it does rather detract from the experience.
Crab cakes are the best in Virginia in my opinion.
The 20% imposed service fee grates on me - I would happily give 20% to a great experience, but I resent being told in advance to do it. Having said that, the staff were efficient and helpful, and we sat there for 2 hours to justify the 20%.
So yes, I will be back, for food and ambience.
Food was excellent, service was sub par. Not a fan of the close to $20 service fee you are automatically charged instead of tipping, seems to make some of the servers lazy. Was cool to go to one time but we won’t be back.

The Boathouse has a really good set of covid rules and killer service. It's expensive - be prepared - but they manage to pull off the feel of high touch service with all the covid safeguards in place! The menu is a bit limited (think seafood) but top-notch quality. (Crab cakes to die for!) This is my go to restaurant during and before covid. You won't regret it.
My husband and I visited the boathouse to celebrate our anniversary and to hear the live jazz music. We had eaten already so we ordered dessert and coffee. The food was great, the service was great. The social distancing was good. We always enjoy visiting the boathouse. We enjoyed the music as well. My only minor complaint is there was no lighting where the band was playing and no “stage” so it was hard to see them although we could hear them just fine. Not a huge deal, we just see live music often so it’s something we picked up on. This will not deter us from coming back though, we had a nice evening.
The epiphany of overpriced and mediocre food. The restaurant runs on reputation and location. The food quality took a nosedive, loss of passion in the kitchen.

Overall the dinner was fair. I don’t think I will return for a while. Our order consisted of tequila and oj, spicy shrimp tacos with chips, coke, 8 oz filet with mashed potatoes and asparagus, and the seafood broil with crab cakes, scallops, and shrimp. I received a phone call prior to my reservation to confirm. It was explained there would be a 20% gratuity added to each check. I was fine with this. Yet, when we got to the restaurant they said this was not considered a tip as it was split with all the staff. A tip was additional. So you are pretty much paying an additional 38-45% to the price of the food. I added 18% on top of it which I regretted by the end of the evening. This is all paid prior to anything. I saw my waiter to bring the drinks, another that dropped off the food, and had half of the dishes cleared. Never an offer of a refill on the soda, if the food was how it should be, box offered at the end, etc. I grabbed a waiter that was finished with another table to get a box for my food. $150 for 2 just wasn’t worth it. I had a great experience the first time I went to Boathouse but this wasn’t it. The steak, potatoes, and asparagus were all good. The sauce on top of it was a little weird but that’s just probably me. The 2 spicy tacos with pineapple salsa were delicious but the chips served with it were cold. The seafood broil was good too. The crab cakes were delicious but the tacos and then the main entrees came out at the same time. With the noncontact ordering system it doesn’t allow you to tell the server the preferences for dinner. It could have been a lot better experience.
The food and view were both great. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of 5 is that there was no option to start a tab on your smartphone when ordering. I had to pull out my wallet 4 separate times and pay immediately to order a drink, an app, an entree, and then dessert, (despite making an account to “remember my card for next time”). I also wish there was an option with the contactless ordering to order things like a water refill, extra silverware, take out box, etc. We had to wave someone down to get their attention, or order more food for someone to actually come to the table to check on us.
My husband and I wanted a night of celebration. The Boathouse was where we had our wedding reception in July and is one of the only restaurants we have visited since March. We love the contactless ordering that allows us to feel safe and in control of the pace of ordering. We had a server named Bobby wait on us and guide us through ordering on the online website. Bobby checked on us multiple times throughout our dinner. I wanted to order the truffle fries with my entree and Bobby guided us with the appropriate actions to ensure that the proper charge was added and discussed what that would look like for us. We had a great meal and left feeling comfortable and relaxed!
Went for brunch and we were not disappointed. The service was fantastic, the food was delicious and the portions were perfect.
Not a fan of their ordering and payment process with the web application via cell phone at the table. They recommended not placing the full order at one time (to avoid everything coming out at one time), but to place the order as needed — so start with appetizers and drinks and place an order for additional items (entree, dessert, etc) as needed throughout the dining experience. But there’s a service fee assessed each time you place a new order. Brunch, service fee and gratuity for a very average quality meal for two cost me $180!!! Beyond that, the service was amazing. Ironically, the servers were quite attentive to our table and needs, yet I was required to order and pay via the web application— incurring unnecessary fees.
Overall NOT a great experience
I understand the reason for the phone ordering and payment process as well as the automatic service fees What was disappointing is that we never saw a server after they explained the new process and the automatic gratuity because they needed to pay their bills too (odd way to tell your customers about the gratuity process) unless we flagged them down or they quickly dropped off the order without even asking if we needed anything.
The automatic gratuity or service charge is understanding but the servers should at least do their part in taking care of the customers. During our meal a server NEVER stopped by to see if our order or food was ok or if we needed anything. Multiple times we had to chase down the staff to get what we needed or to ask for clarification on a menu item. Disappointed that not once did anyone refill the water without us chasing them down. Not once did anyone visit the table to see if the food was prepared as we would have expected so they did not know that one of the meals was served cold and we were missing sauces for the meals without us flagging the staff down. We had to chase staff down for appetizer plates, water and silverware. Unacceptable, disappointing and very frustrating. Maybe the phone system needs a send my server over button because we need something like silverware or water?
The overall experience was not what we had hoped or expected based on prior pre Covid visits. The quality of the service and the food has dramatically declined. We have been to several other Richmond restaurants post Covid and our experiences have been dramatically better than what we experienced here.
Given the choices of restaurants in Richmond I will not be coming back to this establishment nor would I recommend it to my friends.

The view on the balcony at The Boathouse is unbeatable. For that and the cocktails it is worth going to. The food however, is overpriced and under-seasoned. If you go in with this expectation and order a drink and some fried appetizers you should be ok, but do not recommend for a nice dinner.
Dinnner was amazing! The view is incredible! Everyone was very friendly and helpful with the new menu system, and the food was delicious! Would definitely reccomemd to anyone visiting Richmond!
Made reservations through open table, got a table outside around 5pm. We were told how the new ordering system works. Ordered drinks and food. I ordered an old fashioned and my date ordered a Blackberry Basil Smash. My old fashioned was far too sweet and I reluctantly asked for a different one since I cannot drink something so sweet. I got a new one and that one came with simple syrup on the side which was nice so I can control how sweet I want it. I took a sip and it tasted watered down. The other drink, on first sip, was yummy, but as time went on and the ice melted, it just tasted diluted and lost flavor
The food was good. We ordered a maple glazed salmon and crab cakes. I really enjoyed the salmon and the crab cakes were good, the mashed potatoes that came with the crab cakes were exceptional. I don’t have much else to say about the food.
Overall, for the price, I do not think that getting 1 drink & 1 main for 2 people each is worth $105 (including 20% built in gratuity and taxes). It was nice that I didnt have to flag down a waiter to grab the check, we just left as soon as we were ready.
Probably won't every come back as its not worth the value.

Drink took forever to get because app said you were out of stock but bar tender had it. Steak wasn’t cooked right. Sent it back. Still wasn’t right but kept it anyway. Didn’t appreciate not being told the service fee was the gratuity so I doubled the waiters tip without realizing it.
The scenery was absolutely beautiful. We chose the right time of day. The sun was setting and it was gorgeous. The staff were very attentive and friendly. The food was delicious however, the portion sizes did not match the price tag. The meal was way overpriced.
One of our favorite spots to eat. The food and staff are so great!
