Went for brunch and we were not disappointed. The service was fantastic, the food was delicious and the portions were perfect.
Not a fan of their ordering and payment process with the web application via cell phone at the table. They recommended not placing the full order at one time (to avoid everything coming out at one time), but to place the order as needed — so start with appetizers and drinks and place an order for additional items (entree, dessert, etc) as needed throughout the dining experience. But there’s a service fee assessed each time you place a new order. Brunch, service fee and gratuity for a very average quality meal for two cost me $180!!! Beyond that, the service was amazing. Ironically, the servers were quite attentive to our table and needs, yet I was required to order and pay via the web application— incurring unnecessary fees.
Overall NOT a great experience
I understand the reason for the phone ordering and payment process as well as the automatic service fees What was disappointing is that we never saw a server after they explained the new process and the automatic gratuity because they needed to pay their bills too (odd way to tell your customers about the gratuity process) unless we flagged them down or they quickly dropped off the order without even asking if we needed anything.
The automatic gratuity or service charge is understanding but the servers should at least do their part in taking care of the customers. During our meal a server NEVER stopped by to see if our order or food was ok or if we needed anything. Multiple times we had to chase down the staff to get what we needed or to ask for clarification on a menu item. Disappointed that not once did anyone refill the water without us chasing them down. Not once did anyone visit the table to see if the food was prepared as we would have expected so they did not know that one of the meals was served cold and we were missing sauces for the meals without us flagging the staff down. We had to chase staff down for appetizer plates, water and silverware. Unacceptable, disappointing and very frustrating. Maybe the phone system needs a send my server over button because we need something like silverware or water?
The overall experience was not what we had hoped or expected based on prior pre Covid visits. The quality of the service and the food has dramatically declined. We have been to several other Richmond restaurants post Covid and our experiences have been dramatically better than what we experienced here.
Given the choices of restaurants in Richmond I will not be coming back to this establishment nor would I recommend it to my friends.
Had a great time and ran into the Mayor of Richmond.
The view on the balcony at The Boathouse is unbeatable. For that and the cocktails it is worth going to. The food however, is overpriced and under-seasoned. If you go in with this expectation and order a drink and some fried appetizers you should be ok, but do not recommend for a nice dinner.
Dinnner was amazing! The view is incredible! Everyone was very friendly and helpful with the new menu system, and the food was delicious! Would definitely reccomemd to anyone visiting Richmond!
Everything was great the food was excellent the service was great
Drink took forever to get because app said you were out of stock but bar tender had it. Steak wasn’t cooked right. Sent it back. Still wasn’t right but kept it anyway. Didn’t appreciate not being told the service fee was the gratuity so I doubled the waiters tip without realizing it.
The scenery was absolutely beautiful. We chose the right time of day. The sun was setting and it was gorgeous. The staff were very attentive and friendly. The food was delicious however, the portion sizes did not match the price tag. The meal was way overpriced.
One of our favorite spots to eat. The food and staff are so great!
We had a great time at this Boathouse!! Would definitely come back!!
Quality and service have both gone down here. Not sure what happened.
Three of our entrees were very good. The fourth was horrible; should have been sent back. Toughest chicken I’d ever had. The phone only ordering process was horrible and almost caused my husband to walk out. Definitely marred the experience. One person in our party was head of IT at a company a couple years ago, BTW. Ridiculous the wait staff couldn’t take the order, especially bc they had to keep coming to our table to help us with the ordering process. We won’t be back unless this is resolved.
I loved the food and decor. The staff was very professional and the food came out quickly and was expertly made.
Been there multiple times and the food as well as the service is always outstanding. Coupled with the view of the James with the city skylights in the background, it makes the experience truly unforgettable.
If you want a relaxing, enjoyable evening eating excellently prepared gourmet foods served by friendly, professional staff while overlooking the James River, this is your choice for fine dining. You will experience a delightful, memorable evening. If you are visiting the Richmond area, add this to your list of places to enjoy. Pricey? ($$$) yes! Worth it? Absolutely!
The pour of wine was very small given the brand.
Delicious food! And great social distancing practices for ordering and being apart from other patrons. Food was delicious and cooked perfectly. Thank you!
Wonderful date night and great measures were taken to prevent COVID. Order online at the table and pay online as well. Very minimal contact but outstanding service! Do intend on going back.
We went for Sunday lunch/brunch. The restaurant was not at all crowded. Fortunately, the weather cooperated so they were able to open the wall of windows on the west side of the restaurant - beautiful view. While ordering from your mobile phone seems a bit robotic or distant, several of the servers went out of their way to stop by the table to ensure guests knew how to order, help retrieve anything missing (e.g., sugar to go with coffee), and to ensure food was properly prepared. They seemed especially pleased when guests engaged with them. We can understand and appreciate the management desire and effort to protect both their valued staff and guests; however, it was nice to be able to chat with the servers (keeping appropriate distance). We look forward to getting away from masks and being able to communicate more easily; and we absolutely understand and applaud the automated ordering. Good job to all, and thanks for being open and attentive!
The food was great, the service was exceptional and the ambience was nice - it was our first time and it was superb.
Wife had the steak , she felt it was perfect
We were seated at the only table that did not have a candle for ambiance. The Captain of service never came to the table or introduced themself. If there were specials we did not hear of them. Water was only delivered after we received our wine, had to be requested, and was finally delivered after the appetizer. Bread, after asking three times, was delivered just after the water. The manager’s excuse was the had the be baked to order, but was cool when finally delivered and didn’t taste freshly baked.
The food was good (calamari, salmon and lobster) but felt ignored by the wait staff. Dessert was good, but wasn’t sure it was coming until it arrived 20 minutes after ordering. The flamboyance of the server of the dessert was unprofessional after being ignored for over an hour during the main service.
We experienced service with no personal touch. I would have expected much better based on the restaurant’s reputation and previous experience at this and other locations. Other locations handle the barcode ordering in a much more personal and professional manner. It felt like ordering and picking up food at McDonalds.
The value for the service received was not proportional. We left feeling like we were unappreciated customers and were disappointed with our experience .
Food was good, service was good, would go back but did not like ordering from cell phone but our server did it for us.
Always a great experience here
We made reservations for 12pm on a Saturday. Our servers' name was Bobby and he was very knowledgeable about the menu and super nice. We ordered.... Drinks: 2 Lemonades; Appetizers: 1 Crab Entrees: 2 Broiled Seafood Combonations: 1 crab cake, 2 scallops, 2 shrimp, asaragus and mashed potatoes! The food was cooked to perfection and plated beautifully. This is an upscale restaurant and the prices are reflected as such. Trust me, it is definitely worth it.
The balcony overlooking the James is a safe outdoor dining venue, and the food is excellent.
My boyfriend proposed to me right outside the boathouse by the water. We celebrated with some Prosecco, calamari and oysters! Best night ever!
I love this restaurant. The food is always amazing and service is impeccable. They are currently having everyone order their food online which proved to work out very well.
When we got to the Boathouse the Atmosphere& Band was amazing
My food came out ice cold, but the issue was handle right away.
Good food with a great view. Parking a little hectic with the popularity of the restaurants area. Strongly suggest he Salmon, Shallots, and Filet!
Inside was spaced appropriately due to COVID. Our table has a great view of the water. Food was delicious!
Very good food (crab cakes, scallops) but to an already pricey meal they add a mandatory 26%. “Service fee”. Sorry, but the service was not that good.
We sat outside, which we appreciated. A little odd how the service staff can't even take orders, but they were helpful and it all worked out (and we were pre-warned about this, to be fair). The food was delicious, and we enjoyed it.
Intimate dining experience. The Boathouse has done a great job at making modifications to keep their employees as well as patrons safe without diminishing quality of the food or service.
The new system that they have in place for contactless ordering combined with the 20% service fee is disappointing. It is cumbersome and the staff warns you to time your orders. Sorry - if I’m going out for dinner I don’t want to fret over getting my courses ordered in the correct time. Despite the contactless system, the waitstaff hovered about, but really wasn’t able to offer any value. We asked a question about a menu item and were told, “well the menu says...”. I can read, but am looking for some insight from the waitstaff. It isn’t their fault, but I feel this is a bad change for the restaurant.
Beautiful location. Maybe we will try agin at some point.
