Not the best meal we have had at the Boathouse. Salmon overcooked, dry and burnt on the bottom. Fish and Chips cold. The other diners faired better with the Sea Bass and Shrimp and Grits that they said was very good. Service was very slow, even though there was staff and servers standing around talking. Not sure what was the issue. This is the first time we have had a sub par experience at Hopewell Boathouse.

This little restaurant is a hidden little jem in Hopewell! We were so very pleasantly surprised to come across it for lunch this past Monday. It’s a beautiful restaurant with a gorgeous view of the James River. The food & drinks were phenomenal. This will definitely be a regular new spot for us. Can’t wait for the weather to warm up to enjoy their outdoor seating!

*Short Story* At the end of the day, we paid over $100 for crappy service from the front of the (boat) house to the back of the house. There were barely any customers on this Saturday afternoon, and now perhaps I understand why. It will be a while before we spend good money for bad service and cold food.

*Long Story* We had a lunch reservation and when we showed up there was no one at the front area to receive us. Even though several employees were talking to each other and saw us walk in, we stood there for a few minutes while the employees took their time to finish their conversation (0/1). When we were seated, we were explained the ordering system even though we told them we have been here before and understood how it works (0/2). Our waitress came over and reexplained the ordering system again (0/3) and left us to place our orders. Our drinks, and food arrived about 12 minutes after ordering, but the clam chowder was luke warm at best (0/4). We didn’t say anything about the soup, we just hurried to eat it before it got any colder. The baked clams were good (1/5). Our main meals came together (salmon risotto / burger with parm fries). The fries were already room temperature and not even warm to the touch (1/6). Our waitress thankfully appeared and left saying she would get us fresh/hot fries. Over 30 minutes later we had long finished our meals and there were no fries anywhere or our waitress for that matter. I went to the bar and asked the bartender if she could find our waitress and was told the waitress is on break and to expect her back soon. The waitress showed up and we explained our fries never came and asked to have them removed from the check so we could pay. As we were leaving someone (perhaps the manager) came over and gave us our fries to go, I mean really? The point was to eat them with our meal while they were hot, not take them to go in 30 degree weather and have them cold before we even got home.

Both the service and food were exceptional. We were celebrating our daughters 22nd birthday and the meal did not disappoint. The chef also made a delicious dessert which was hand delivered to our table. The Boathouse was the perfect venue for our celebration! We look forward to dining there again soon.

Very nice facility with great views. Food and drinks were generally very good. Very unhappy with the decision to not use dedicated servers but have all ordering through the app. We were entertaining business clients and this was very cumbersome and distracting, and clients were not pleased. Also, delivery of bar drinks was very spotty after ordering. We watched our drink sit on the bar for a long time and it was not delivered until we asked. Suggest you offer a dedicated server vs. app to those who request. Would like to use this location for more business meetings but will probably not do so if you continue to offer app only service.

The food delivery was a little slow considering we were literally the only party in the House. Touchless ordering is good. Order in shifts to not have all food show up at same time.

I ordered the shrimp tocos which were flavorless, kind of bland. My husband ordered a hamburger and stayed “no pink” meat, which he got pink meat anyway. I had a mimosa, what was really good, but not for $10.00. The environment was very nice. If I were to go back, I would like to sit outside. I did t like how gratuity is automatically included.

We drove in from Jersey and were looking for a nice place to eat. This place exceeded that!! It’s tucked away in a cozy area with amazing ambiance and atmosphere. We were seated in the most comfortable booth I’ve ever sat in! It reminds you of a seashell. The ordering is with a QR code and it was the easiest process. You placed your own order, course by course, and cashed out when you were ready. We had the crab artichoke dip which was fantastic. The beer battered fish and chips the fried shrimp were good but could have used a little more seasoning. The fries and the coleslaw was delicious! Everyone on staff was helpful. All in all we had a wonderful time and will absolutely be back next time we are in town. The General Manager (I believe her name was Amanda) was extremely pleasant and very helpful. Highly recommend!

Great view, friendly staff
The fried oysters were okay but the presentation would have been nicer with a richer brown batter.
The boathouse burger was cooked to our request but the bottom bun was soggy and the fries were salty and lukewarm.
The artichoke dip was served hot but wasn't flavorful and tasted more like a cheese dip.

The food was very good and the view on the river is nice. The inability of the wait staff to take an order without using your phone is extremely unhelpful and lacks in customer focus. It also gives the wait staff less of a reason to check on their customers. Perhaps this is why we had so much trouble getting our water and tea refilled. And if you drink a lot of water, request a large glass as the water glasses on the table are not much bigger than a Dixie cup.

From the beginning to end this meal was a disaster!! We have witnessed the birth of this restaurant and now we see the decline, in just a short few years!! We frequent this Boathouse and have previously frequented the Brandermill restaurant before this was built. A $100 person meal should be noteworthy for good, food, drink and service. We will remember this experience for the underwhelming food, drink & service. When I made this reservation via OpenTable, the restaurant would not allow me to make an indoor reservation. Via the OT app, The Boathouse only showed outdoor patio seating for a $5 up charge per person. I will refer to this later.
Our hostess, maître d’ and drink person all asked us if this was our first visit to The Boathouse? No we said politely, and added we have been coming here since this restaurant opened. I hate it when people make assumptions about me!
Then they told us that we need to use the QR code on our phone and that there will be gratuity automatically added to our bill at the end. When our maître d’, I think her name was Stella, suggested she could help us with the QR code ordering, I nearly lost it! I told her that we have been coming here for a long time and we were patrons the night The Boathouse reopened after the Covid restrictions were lifted.
We ordered drinks and my wife’s Cosmo was awful and had to be sent back and exchanged for a vodka & cranberry drink.
We ordered two appetizers and they were good. Then we ordered our salads and although they list blue cheese dressing, In actually they don’t have it. We asked for silverware and napkins to eat our food and also small serving plates to eat our appetizers. We also had to ask for salt and pepper. Stella, our maître d’ brought a pepper mill and salt shaker and placed them on the table. I got up a pretended to be our waiter/waitress and peppered my wife’s salad, then I did mine. Again a $200 dinner and it’s self service.
When our entree arrived we were fit to be tied!!!

Since you have the scan in table that customer ordered their own food and drinks, service is more and more impersonal, The Boathouse lost the customer service attentive to details with this new system. Also adding the 20% service fee is something that the owner of the restaurant will assume that cost not the customer. Not even in NY or NJ they have that very dissatisfied and disappointed.

Very attractive space, our first time there. Look forward to returning when the weather is warmer to sit on the patio.Thanksgiving buffet was bountiful and varied. Servers rushed by our table many times but it was hard to get them to slow down enough to respond to some of our needs. We wondered if that was due to the built in service charge...no need to stay by our table longer.

The Thanksgiving buffet was excellent. The food was fresh and replenished often. The desert bar was not very good, however. The desert portions were tiny, and the selection very limited. We've eaten at this Thanksgiving buffet 4 years in a row excluding 2020 (due to COVID-19 pandemic), and the desert bar has gotten worse every year. The Boathouse now charges a 20% gratuity, and our server didn't earn it; however, someone else helped out.
