About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Dog-friendly
A Historical Coaching Inn with Traditional bar and a formal dining room; both with its own character.

We serve a great selection of pub classics, using as much produce from the nearby Ripley Castle Estate & Gardens as possible. Our chefs are constantly inspired to create special dishes to take advantage of the 2000 acre Estate and extensive Walled gardens produce.

We serve a selection of popular local real ales and have guest beers on a regular basis including some rare gems, so there is always a reason to pop into the bar.

There is a well structured and varied wine list suitable for all levels of wine drinker from affordable afternoon drinking through to more powerful and exquisite wines, which can be matched to our dishes to create a full dining experience.

We cater for any number of guests from couples to larger parties, families and dog friendly tables in the bar.

Please note we are unable to reserve tables outdoors.

It was a pleasant lunch. Nice atmosphere with a reasonable number of diners. Menu main courses were limited to only 4 dishes (pie, fish, burger, vegetarian) although starters, salads, sandwiches & sweets were available too. Service was prompt and polite. I will go back sometime soon for sure.

Enjoyed our meal at the Boars Head. Menu was limited which is why we didn’t dine there on the second night.

Due to traffic we were running late but the staff were very accommodating and fitted us in later. All the staff we encountered were friendly and professional. I was a delightful experience and our stay made it even more special. I would definitely recommend

Avoid the 3-bone Lamb Rack—it's like rubber—mine was nigh on inedible. I like to dine locally at the Boar's Head and am usually very satisfied with both the food and the service, but on this occasion, I was quite disappointed with the main course. My partner's main (Steak Pie) was delicious, the wine (a bottle of Merlot) was good, and the dessert was delightful. The 3-bone Lamb Rack, however, was like rubber... impossible to cut with a knife. I managed to scrape a tiny bit of meat off one of the cuts, but I could not chew/swallow it, so I had to spit it back onto the plate. The accompanying mash was lovely, but the meat was inedible. When the young waiter chap cleared the plates and asked if everything was OK, I told him that I had not been able to enjoy the dish as the meat was like rubber and completely indelible... he just shrugged his shoulders and simply said, "I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it" before clearing the plates and wandering off. I called after him and politely suggested that he try cutting the meat himself to see what I meant... he seemed to ignore me, and nothing further was said. No discount on the meal was forthcoming, so I essentially had a plate a mash for £30 - not good. Our total bill was just over £90 for two mains, one shared dessert, a point of Guiness and a shared bottle of wine - given that I didn't eat my main and that I mentioned it to staff, I dont think I'll risk the 3-bone lamb rack again - really not worth it and very disappointing. The Boar's Head is a lovely place, with polite staff, and mostly serves good food. I will probably go back again sometime- but the lamb is off the menu for me!

A personal favourite of mine and wasn’t let down on this most recent visit. The Fry-Day deal represents excellent value.
